My iMac won't play recorded CDs

My iMac has stopped playing recorded CDs.  It will play DVDs and recognizes blank CDs and DVDs. The CDs spin for a time then are ejected. There are no error messages, just ejection.  Any suggestions?

I just got a brand new iMac today and was happy with it, until I tried to burn a playlist in iTunes. It keeps flashing "insert blank disc..." - even though finder recognizes there is a blank disc, I tried three different disc. Same message. I used these same discs on my Macbook Pro and it burned them no problem.
Apple's really starting to get on my nerves with product reliability! This iMac is a replacement to one bought in April!!

  • Imac won't play burned cds since itunes+ update

After I updated itunes to 7.2 my imac will no longer recognize any CDs I have burned. I get the standard "This disc has not been formatted" etc. The CDs will play on a regular CD player but not the imac. The imac will play all of my commercial CDs without problem. I have tried the utility disk repair and it says it finds no problem. I have updated permissions.
I downloaded the update a 2nd time and tried reinstalling it but I don't think it is since as soon as I click install it says installation successful after about 10 seconds.
Any ideas what could be going wrong? Seems that if it were the CD drive it wouldn't play the commercial CDS either.

  • IMac won't play DVDs but will play CDs

For some reason my late '09 iMac won't play DVDs, at least not often. I was watching a DVD on it yesterday, left the disc in to go downstairs, and when I came back it wouldn't play again. It now doesn't even recognise that there is a DVD in it, but just spits it out again after a few seconds. I imported a couple of CDs to iTunes with it yesterday, it generally seems fine with CDs, but it has a big problem with DVDs. Any ideas on what I can do to solve this?

    Hi Marcus
It sounds like the DVD drive heads have gone out of position and the drive needs to be replaced. Contact your dealer or Apple.

  • My 24" iMac won't read audio cds--ejects them after about 15 seconds

My 24" intel iMac won't read audio cds. It ejects them after about 15 seconds. I have virtually never played cds on this machine in five years. It plays dads with no problem. Anybody have any feedback. I also saw a fix by deleting some presence files.

I saw this on a forum from about four years ago:
    Trash the following folders:
    com.apple.kernelcaches (from System/Library/Caches
    extensions.kextcache (from System/Library
    CDInfo.cidb (from Home/Library/Preferences
    Restart
    Could this be a fix.
Unfortunately, I can't reset PRAM. I've done it a thousand times over twenty years, but my machine simply boots up without the extra chimes.

  • Imac won't play songs from my iPhone after I have authorised the computer

Imac won't play songs from my iPhone after I have authorised it

My solution was restoring my iPhone. Techs at Apple couldn't figure out why so I had to do a restore and worked after that. I know it's a pain and you have to reinstall all you stuff, but it worked for me. Hope this helps.

  • DVD on new iMac won't play

I'm trying to play a commercially made DVD on my new iMac with Mt. Lion.  The preferences are set to play automatically when a DVD is inserted.  The title page shows up, but it won't play.  When I click the play button, the 'stop' button flashes momentarily, then shows the 'play' button again.  I've tried to play it using menu commands, the space bar and hitting the play button.  Each time the play triangle symbol flashes to the parallel lines, but goes right back to the play triangle.  This is a new imac.  I've not tried to play a DVD on it before.  ANyone have any ideas?

Since you list your operating system as 10.7.4, I would guess that this is NOT a "New" iMac.  10.8 has been the installed OS on new systems for quite some time.  Also the new iMacs releaased last month do not contain an optical disc device.  If you need a DVD player (or recorder) you will have to buy an external SuperDrive (or other similar device).
Next thing when trying to play a DVD for the first time, there is normally a DVD Region selection window that opens.  There are several regions in the world and the US and some other countries use region 1.  You need to have admin privlieges to make the change.  ALSO REMEMBER that there are only a total of five changes you can make to the region setting.  Once you make the fifth change, and that number includes the first region you select, you are stuck with remaining on the fifth change you made.
Now if the region had been changed by someone previously and you are already on the fifth change and the region selected for the fifth change does not match your DVD;s region, well you are out of luck.
You may want to check on the region setting info here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
Note that the region code setting is hardware based and will not be changed by even a complete erase of the hard drive and reinstalling an OS.
Another thing to keep in mind is that recent updates to the OS will sometimes give "funny" results when you are using an external monitor (or projector).  Copyright/Digital RightManagment will sometimes prevent display with anything plugged in to the Thunderbolt or MiniDisplay Port.

  • New iMac won't play many of my purchased iTunes songs

I have 2 of my 5 computers authorized for iTunes. My new iMac won't let me play many of songs, and I get a message that my iMac is not authorized to play the song I paid for on my other computer. I repeatedly go through the process of telling it my iMac is authorized...it agrees, then returns to tell me it cannot play my songs because my iMac is not authorized. What step am I missing?

  • G4 iMac won't play downloaded HD TV show.  Is there a way to play SD?

    Hello.
I downloaded an HD version of one of my favorite TV shows and it came with the SD bundled version for my iPod. Unfortunately, the processor in my G$ iMac won't render the HD version on my computer. It freezes up. Is it possible to watch the SD version on my iTunes video window, or do I have to search for and download the SD version separately? If so, where do I find the SD versions?
Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance,
    Andy

I'd suggest not purchasing the HD version since you cannot watch it.
Is it possible to watch the SD version on my iTunes video window
iTunes prefs -> Playback. Tick *Playback TV shows using SD version*.

  • 1 of 2 DVRs won't play recorded programs

I have 2 DVRs, the 'master' DVR and a secondary one. The secondary one suddenly stopped letting me play recorded show. If I try to play anything, it freezes for about 30 seconds and then goes back to live TV. I've reset the box and used the in-home agent to no avail. Any suggestions?

  • BMW Won't Play Burned CDs

I have a 2003 BMW 525i. I burned a few audio CDs with iTunes, so I could listen to them in the car. When I inserted them, either nothing would play, or a continuous noise would come from the speakers.
Should I set it to a lower running speed? Does it not play audio CDs? Or is it iTunes, do I need to use different software to burn it? I'm having a tough time figuring this out, and I need an answer!!!
I know this may be a problem with the car, so I should go to a BMW forum or go to the dealer and figure out what's up. If its a software issue, however, I figured I should check the Support Communities first.
    Thanks in advanced!!!

Pretty old CD player so my first guess is it does not accept CD-R (burned) discs.

  • IMAC won't play audio CD's

iMAC MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875 won;t read audio CD's. Reads DVD's and data CD's fine, but won't read/play audio CD's. Insert an audio CD, whirls around a bit then spits it back out after about 10 seconds.
I reset the PRAM and NVRAM, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    Reset the SMC; http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
I also did a zero-out erase and re-install of OSX. Nothing helped
I found this thread about cleaning the lense with a credit card and a soft cloth, but didn't work either.

I had just cleaned out the garage, closets, etc and have a mountain of CD's ready to convert to MP3's. It's incredibly frustrating to say the least. Anyone know what they charge at the Apple store? Do they charge just to diagnose the problem?

  • Windows 7 on my iMac won't play sounds through headphones

On Windows 7, I can't make sounds play through my headphones plugged into the audio jack; the internal speakers always do it instead. The headphones don't appear in the "Playback devices" column, even though RealTek recognises that something's been plugged in/unplugged to it.
Also, the latest version of Boot Camp software drivers I burned to a DVD after upgrading to Lion (v.4.0) refuses to start; it keeps saying that 'Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model"; I was able to install the v.3.0 drivers by using "Troubleshoot compatability" within the Drivers/Apple/BootCampx64 before, but now it insists I use setup.exe- which refuses to install, even in compatability mode!
It's incredibly aggravating, since I always use my good headphones for gaming so I don't disturb my wife! Help!

So the Bootcamp 4.0 drivers won't work with my 2008 iMac? I'm running 3.3 then, and the problem persists.
I've just tried uninstalling the RealTek drivers; Windows seems to auto-install a "High Definition Audio Device" that DOES play sounds through the headphones... albeit incredibly quietly. Barely perceptible at full volume. I've tried to install the Cirrus drivers from the 4.0 Bootcamp disk; they claim to install correctly (in less than a second, which makes me skeptical), but they still don't appear.
It seems I can have Realtek and no headphones, or no Realtek and minimal sound...

  • Intel iMac won't play DVD

I have an Intel iMac purchased in late 2009 and the superdrive has quit playing DVDs. It will burn all types of media and will play CDs and will read and install software CDs but will not play a DVD. These are new commercial movies. After inserting the DVD it spins for a few minutes then ejects. No error messages. Reboot did not help.

I mac Mid 2010 all latest sware and updates. Superdrive suddenly wont recognize presence of media. Ejects discs after a short while. Maybe coincidence but seemed to happen after an auto update and using of itunes match.

  • IMac Won't Play DVDs

I recently tried playing commercial DVDs.  The drive spins, but ejects without playing.  No error message.
Also tried burning a recent slideshow and the DVD-R I used wasn't recognized.

What are your settings for DVD, CDs in the system preferences?

  • My Intel based iMac won't play Disney DVDs

We have some of the recently released Disney DVDs (Lion King, Dumbo, etc.) and they will not play on our 27inch iMac.  I put the DVDs in, it spins, makes some great noises and then pops out the DVD.  DVD player never pops, up, nothing happens.  Any ideas?

    Hello everybody,
I have got the same problem with my iMac 2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5. The Disney DVD Rebelle doesn't work. It is not a BlueRay and all my other commercial DVDs work perfectly except this DVD which is my first Disney DVD. It works in my DVD reader in my living-room. Maybe the problem comes from Disney DVD...
