My iMac won't run Lion?

I have a 2006 iMac with a 2 GHz Dual Core processor. I also have a mobile me account, an iPhone and iPad. Yesterday I tried to buy Lion on the App store. I got a message that the processor isn't suitable, and I could not download Lion. I need to get into iCoud to synch everything. Do I have any alternative to buying a new computer?

No. Lion only works on Core 2 Duo or Xeon processors with at least 2 GBs of installed RAM.

  • Can my iMac 5,1 run Lion?

I have an iMac with Model Identifier 5,1. It has a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3GB of Memory, a 500GB HD with almost 400GB available. Can I run Lion on this machine?

Be advised though that Lion is somewhat of a memory hog; since your machine is already maxed out, I'd suggest compensating for that by having only one memory intensive app open at a time (such as a photo editing app); otherwise you may encounter crashes or beachballing.

  • New 27 iMac won't run Chrome Beta (fresh download) - I used Migration Asst.

I just setup my shiny new 27 inch i7 and used Migration Assistant to copy my stuff from an older dual G5 running Leopard. It took nearly 12 hours to copy the 300+GB of data.
Mostly things like iPhoto, Lightroom, Mail, etc. work GREAT.
However, one of the first orders of business was to download the Google Chrome beta which I've been running on my MBP and MacPro.
When I try to open the Chrome app it immediately quits (tried a restart of the iMac). The detail report doesn't shed any light on what happened to me (maybe others would be able to determine the cause from the report).
    Any ideas ?
I was wondering if by copying stuff from a Leopard system (and non-Intel) that I now have some backwards compatible setting ON that is preventing Chrome from loading.
I've never used Migration Assistant before, always hand copying what I needed on a fresh install. Maybe I should reinstall Snow Leopard over my current User folders.
    Thanks,
    Ed

In the end a manual transfer of pictures, music, data, etc. was far faster than using Migration Assistant and worked fine. Just replaced Music, Pictures, etc. with the folder from the old computer and all upgrades were performed and everything was in place.
What really made the manual migration palatable is that I have MobileMe. All of those data files (address book, mail preferences, bookmarks, etc etc) moved automatically via MobileMe sync. Without MobileMe, it would have been much harder I suppose.
More difficult was the hassle of reinstalling Adobe Creative Suite, Office, etc. But in the end a fresh install of everything has made my new iMac i7 a screaming fast machine.
    Absolutely love it !
    Thanks for all the advice.

  • 10.3.9: G3 iMac won't run 'Repair Permissions' from Panther Disk!

I upgraded the memory to 1024 mb RAM and reinstalled Panther yesterday after leaving it on the shelf for a couple of years due to numerous problems running it on Kihei and Pismo (both with 256 mb RAM). The loading process went well; I ran the following utilities after loading all of the updates:
    TechTool 4.0.1
Disk First Aid from Panther disk
    Repair Permissions from Panther Disk
    Reset NVRAM, PRAM and OF
TechTool showed no problems and Disk First Aid said a repair was made. The first time I attempted to repair 'permissions' the process seemed to be about half way complete when it stopped and displayed the following error:
'Disk Management Tool' has lost contact with Disk Utility, close function and restart Disk Utility' or something to this effect.
Every attempt afterwards results in the same error message coming up almost immediately. iMac seems to be running properly at the moment; is it about to crash again like it did so many times in the past before I reverted to Jaguar? Any insight or advice will be welcome. I will post a copy of this on the 10.3 Panther board too.

Road Hazard: Try the instructions in this article. It is not possible to use the Panther installation disks to repair the permissions on a system which is experiencing this issue.
scapesuiter: A Kihei is one of the models which make up the first slot-loading iMac machines. These came out in October 1999 and were discontinued in July 2000.

  • IMac won't run any applications

We had a power outage yesterday.  Since restarting my iMac, it will not launch any application (including finder).
I cannot click on anything without it failing.  So I can't even tell you precisely which version of OS X I am running.
However, I was able to open safari guest mode and am currently typing this from that.  Seems to be working fine.
I have tried restarting the computer in safe mode a few times and am not getting anywhere.
Wanted to see if there is anything else I try before lugging this in to a Mac store...

Without knowing which OS is installed, we would be just guessing the troubleshooting suggestions.  Each OS has their own.  Also, you should always know which OS version is installed on a Mac.  Otherwise, how would you know which software is compatible to install/download?

  • I have a sony hdr td 20ve 3d video camera. Is it possible to import into iMovie 11, edit and export in 3D? I have an iMac 2008 model running Lion 10.7.4

Is it possible to import 3d from the Sony 3D videocamera, model HDR TD 20VE into iMovie 11, edit and export the files to iDVD and produce a disc that plays on a 3d compatible DVD player?

Yes, you can purchase Lion as well as iPhoto and iMovie from the App Store. But before you can do that you must update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 by installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 update. Then you can sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password, locate the items you want, purchase them, and download them to your computer.

  • New intel iMac won't run PE3

My new iMac w/ OS 10.5 will not open my PE3. It shuts down before it is fully open!
Can anyone shed a little light on this problem?

    Hi Barbara,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I never installed the Snow Leopard 10.6 that came with the iMac. I've been waiting till I read a bit more about it! PE3 is the only Adobe product on this computer.  I downloaded a trial version of the new PE8 and I was pleased with it. It seems a good idea to up grade now and avoid any future problems with incompatibility.
    Thanks again,
    Hank

  • I have 10.6.8 on a Mac mini that won't run Lion. Where can I buy/download iMovie 9.0.4 from?

    It's all in the title!!

An iLife 11 DVD. Places such as Amazon may sell these; you may also want to contact the Mac App Store support and tell them that you want to purchase iMovie for Snow Leopard but can't get it from the App Store.

  • Can I use the same TimeMachine backup (ext.drive) on my desktop and laptop (but one running Lion, the other Mtn.Lion)?

Want to use the TM backup from my desktop to keep my laptop up to date when I travel, and then vice versa, when I return.  The laptop (MacBook Pro) is running Mtn. Lion 10.8.3, but the iMac desktop is running Lion 10.7.5.  Is this even possible with the same external hard drive being used to go back and forth like that?

You can use the Time Machine backup files of the iMac onto your MacBook without any problem because your MacBook has got a newer version than the one the iMac has got. However, you shouldn't do it in your iMac, and if you do that, you might damage OS X because your Time Machine apps will replace Lion apps.
You can still restore individual data onto your iMac > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html Note that you can back up both Macs onto the same external disk, but you can't use the same backup in both, so Time Machine will create another backup for each Mac you have

  • HT1338 How can I upgrade to Lion?  My iMac cannot support Mountain Lion but I do not see Lion in the app store anymore.

I want to upgrade my 2006imac with 3GB ram but mountain lion requires 4gb. Can I purchase mountain lion in the app store and it will install lion or will it just charge me $20 for an OS I can't use?

A 2006 iMac cannot run Mountain Lion at all. Mountain Lion only requires 2 GB of RAM, but your model has a video controller which doesn't support features required by Mountain Lion, so Mountain Lion does not support your model. The earliest iMac which can run Lion is the mid 2007 model (aluminium body). A full list of supported models is available here.
If you attempt to buy Mountain Lion in the App Store using your 2006 iMac, the sale will not proceed and you will get an error message saying you cannot purchase Mountain Lion because it is not compatible with your computer. You will not be charged.
If you are currently running Snow Leopard and want to upgrade to Lion, but didn't already purchase Lion (e.g. for use on another computer), it is apparently possible to place a special order for Lion via a telephone call to Apple Customer Support. (I say "apparently" because there have been reports that Apple told some people this was the correct solution, but early attempts to place an order were refused with Apple Support claiming they weren't selling Lion at all. I think this was a temporary situation and it should be resolved by now.) There are links to support telephone numbers here.
Apple will charge you the standard retail price for Lion (e.g. US$29.99 in the US) and supply you with a "redeem code" for the App Store. That is entered by going to the Featured category in the toolbar, and clicking Redeem under the Quick Links heading on the right side. Once your code is redeemed, Lion will be added to the list of purchases for your Apple ID, and you can download and install it.
If you had already bought Lion for use on another computer, you can re-download it from the Purchases list in App Store, but there might be a couple of catches:
    1. Some people have found that Lion was added to their list of hidden purchases. You need to unhide it first. Do this by going to your Account page (under Quick Links, or "View My Account" under the Store menu in the menu bar). If you have hidden purchases, there will be a "View Hidden Purchases" link, and from there you can unhide Lion.
    2. If you are running Lion and want to redownload the installer on that computer, you may need to hold down the Option key when clicking on the Purchases heading in the toolbar, to enable the download button for Lion.

  • IMac Won't Connect to 5ghz Airport Extreme?

    Hi,
Brought home a new 17" iMac (2.0, 1G Ram, Superdrive) and an Airport Extreme. I set up two networks, one for iMac and my wife's Macbook to run on the 802.11n (5ghz) of the Extreme, and the other a "g" network for the older laptops. I set this up by using the "secret" published in this month's Macworld. Turns out my iMac won't run (or even see) the 5ghz "n" network, but does see the 2.4ghz "n" network. It seems speedy enough at 2.4 but I'd like it work with 5ghz. Apple's site says the 1.83ghz iMac won't do this but that's it--I assume the 2.0ghz version will. Any help is appreciated.
    Joe

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did run that disk. I followed the instructions on the Apple site to check the Network Info utility to make sure the "n" appeared for the airport. Not sure what to do next. My wife's Macbook (which we also purchased yesterday--we made Steve very happy!) sits about four feet from my iMac and works just fine on the 5ghz band. Strange.

  • IMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?

iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?  Got a brand new iMac and purchased external speakers for same.  Hooked them into external speaker jack and the computer does not recognize the external speaker jack.  I then plugged them into the external head phone jack and the computer recognized the head phone jack.  How can I get the computer to recognize the speaker jack?

Thanks "a brody," my mistake, I was mistaking the "audio in" jack for a speaker output jack.  I have some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers with a built in amplifier that I am using and they sound beautiful.  I do have them plugged into the correct jack, but was thinking there was a speaker out put and headphone out put.
Thanks again for correcting me, I feel much better now that I know my brand new iMac isn't defective, lol.

  • Illustrator CS5.1 won't open on iMac running Lion

    Hello,
I have an iMac I bought this year running Lion, and just installed Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium.  All the applications will open except for Illustrator, which gives me the error message: "You can't open the application Adobe Illustrator CS5.1 because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
What does this mean, and is there a way to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Josh

It means that you cannot run Illustrator on a Power PC version of a Mac but if you have Lion installe then you have an Intel iMac so this should not be a problem.
I have two suggestions one is to go to the User/Username/Library/Preferences and trash com.adobe.illustrator.plist and if you also have it com.adobe.illustrator.plist.lockfile. The firt oe you should have the second one I ahve just observed for the first time on my Mac so I am not certain of why it is there. But if you have it trash it as well.
The second is to repair yur permissions.
The third suggestion is to unistal and reinstall the Suite usig the Adobe installer utility in the Uttilities Folder.
