My iMac won't start and there's a prohibition symbol showing when starting up

hey there, I'm new here.
I'm having a problem with my iMac. last night I updated to OS X Yosemite but it crashed in the middle of installation and went off by itself and now it won't start up. just displaying grey screen with ø (prohibition symbol). i tried to install OS Snow Leopard but the Macintosh HD cannot be found.
what should i do? any advice will be very helpful.

You're right, it would have been covered under warranty. But because of the user damage, chances are there's a 200-something dollar fee . If you explain to them that it had a defect previously, they might replace it for you at no charge. **MIGHT**. But they would have to believe that it had a defect previously.

- Have you tried differnt cable/USB port?wall chargers
- Have you tried resetting it:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- When you connect it you computer doe you se the iPod in iTunes? If yes I would try restoring it. First from backup and then to factory defaults.
- You may have a battery or hardware problem and thus an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store may be in order.

In order to download to your phone over the air, you need to be connected to WiFi.
It's possible the Internet connection through Verizon is not stable enough for the downlaod to begin (it is a very large download).
You might want to head over to Starbucks with your laptop for the afternoon and see if you can download it over their WiFi.

Devices (as shown below) only seem to show when starting a thread. Don't show when replying which isn't very useful. Is there a setting somewhere for this?

That screen is telling you the iPhone has gone into recovery mode, and you need to use the recovery mode instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 to attach to a computer running iTunes. Summary of instructions:

My iMac started lagging badly with a color wheels spinning round and round, so I rebooted and now it won't startup at all.

Without any problem. Just extract the hard drive, buy an enclosure to put the hard drive and connect it to your new computer after setting it up, so you will be able to transfer all your data onto the new Mac. Brand new IMac 27 bluetooth mouse and keyboard not connecting for eight minutes after start up.

I have a new imac 27 that has worked flawlessly for three weeks.
All of a sudden, when starting up the mac boots fine but the bluetooth mouse and keyboard are non responsive. This state is maintained for between 7 and 8 minutes then both mouse and keyboard start working and continue doing so for the rest of the day....until the next restart and the whole saga repeats itself.
Both sets of batteries are fully charged.
I have scoured different sites and tried any suggestion that made any sense, to no avail. All I am able to do at the moment is to do the time, wait the 7 to 8 mins. and then all's good.
My first Mac and this is very annoying especially as Apple must be aware of this issue but no solution is forthcoming!
Any suggestions/workarounds would be great.

if you are using rechargeable batteries sometimes they don't stay charged for as long as they should try using alkalaine batteries and see if the issue still persists.
also try doing an SMC reset, the following article tells how to do this:

Imac won't drag and drop

I have a new iMac w/Mountain Lion and it won't drag and drop. I can't move folders or move files into folders. Any ideas?

Please restart the computer and re-try. Also, going forward please provide a more descriptive paragraph of exactly what steps you have taken.

I've got a problem with my iPod colour...I've just bought a new iPod and then i wanted to clear iTunes AND iPod updater. But the problem is that the iPod updater won't unistall. There's a warning saying: internal failure

in this context, there's a couple of different things that could be causing that error.
(1) you can get it sometimes if you try to uninstall the updater from a different XP user account from which the updater was installed, or try to install a higher version of the updater in a different user account from a lower version.
so if you've got several different user accounts on that PC, see if you can find the account in which the updater was originally installed, and try to uninstall it from there.
(2) if you can't uninstall the updater from any account (or you don't have multiple user accounts on that PC), the installation configuration information for the existing updater may be compromised.
in that case, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility, and use it to clear the things called either iPod for Windows or iPod Updater. (my 2004-11-15 version of the updater shows up in Windows CleanUp as "iPod Updater", but my three later versions show up as "iPod for Windows".)
