My images have shrunk (MB-wise)!

I used the batch process in the APE Editor to resize my photos from 240 to 300 dpi or ppi or whatever it is. Prior to this, they were all about the same size as the CR2 files (for example, 16 MB on average); after resizing, though (as highest quality jpgs, #12), they are only 1 or 2 MBs!
I have three questions about this:
1) Why did this happen?
2) Is this bad? Has quality gone out the window (it doesn't seem so to the naked eye)?
3) If it is bad/was a boo-boo, what can I do to prevent such a drastic slimming effect the next time I resize to 300?

<<Then you should be fine. It's not unusual--I'm working right now on a tiff, for example, that's 19 MB, but the jpg it makes even doing a regular Save As, is only 1.6 MB.>>
That's great news; they still looked the same to the naked eye[s], but I was worried.
Still, though, I'm afraid that a catscan of my brain would reveal it has been, and remains, boggled and discombobulated. With the resolution of the images having increased from 240 to 300, shouldn't the physical dimension of the images be reduced? Yet, they have stayed the same (18" X 12", give or take).
It seems to me that the image size staying the same would indicate that the image has been upsampled ("calculated pixels" scattered around existing pixels, with the software guessing which color[s] they should be), which would presumably mean a degradation of image integrity/quality.
Hopefully I'm misunderstanding this and everything is, indeed, hunky dory.

  • Images have ? symbol on the top right corner of the thumbnail  what does this mean and how do I remove it?

    Q - My images have a
? symbol on the top right corner of the thumbnail what does this mean and how do I remove it?
    A - The
? symbol is used to identify a file that Lightroom can no longer access; probably because it has been moved using OS drag/drop or Move command rather than Lightroom.
    Click the
? symbol will cause a small dialog will appear. This dialog will provide information as to where the file was originally located along with an option to find (Locate) it again.
As you'll quickly realise, clicking the
? symbol is fine for finding individual files that may have been relocated, but not for large numbers. There must be a better way
Look at the Folder panel (left side of Library module) and you should find that the folder/subfolder containing the files that Lightroom can no longer find are shown in Red text. It is the red text that Lightroom uses to help you identify a folder/subfolder that contains files that it has lost track off.
    On the Mac you should
Ctrl-click (right-click when using two button mouse) the folder/subfolder, a pop-up menu will appear. From the pop-up menu choose the command
Locate Missing Folder, a dialog should appear. The dialog gives you access to every hard disk connected to your computer or CD/DVDs if they're in the tray. Use this dialog to navigate to the location where the folder is now located, then select this folder (not the files). Finally, press the
Choose button and allow Lightroom to do its stuff.
The method described above also applies to the PC version although the dialog is called
    Browse for Folder and the
    Choose button is replaced by
    OK.
You can avoid getting into a situation were Lightroom looses track of your folders/subfolders by using a variation of above.

  • I have problems with uploading images to my printing company have the images have been manipulated through CS6 i have saved images as jpeg but the printer company tell me they are not j peg, they will not upload images save from a camera are fine

I have problems with uploading images to my internet printing company when  the images have been manipulated through CS6 and  i have saved images as jpeg  the printer company tell me they are not j peg,
but images saved from my phone or camera images that have not been manipulated upload fine, What am i doing wrong?

Save/Export them as JPG. Photoshop defaults to PSD, so make sure you select JPG and not just rename the file to .jpg.
There are two ways to save them as JPG: Regular Save as option or Save for Web & Devices
    Take your pick.

  • The thumbnail images have disappeared from one of my sequences

I have 3 sequences open in the timeline and the thumbnail images have disappeared from the clips in one of them. It's very frustrating to work without them, how do I get them back?

Thanks so much! That actually wasn't it though... The thumbnail display was already set to 'name plus thumbnail' but 'track size' was set to 'custom'. Once I changed 'track size' to 'small' (which is what my other sequences which were displaying thumbnails were set to) the thumbnails reappeared. Yipee!!!!

  • After Import in LR 4.2 all images have development modifications

When I import images no matter if RAW or JPG, when I go to the development module all images have various modifications on all slidedrs from exposure to saturation.  I haven't changed any settings or global settings but each slider will already be modified.  Previously when importing images all sliders were set to ZERO, but now all of those sliders are anywhere from - to + modification.  Can someone please help?
LR 4.2, Windows 7 64-bit, 24GB ram, Catalog has been optimized, Develop Settings and Metadata setting are set to none on import.
    Thanks,
    Curtis

First thing to check is the Presets Tab of the Lightroom Preferences to make sure that "Apply auto tone adjustments" is NOT checked. If it's checked, uncheck it and try importing again.
If that setting is NOT checked, then perhaps you've inadvertently changed the default develop settings.....to check this take one of the adjusted images into the Develop module, then press and hold the Shift key. The Reset button at bottom right of the screen will change to "Reset (Adobe)"....click on it and see if the sliders revert to zero. If they do, you need to reset the default develop settings....Menu Bar>Develop>Set Default Settings, then click on "Restore Adobe Default Settings".

  • What ppi should each image have PRIOR to importing to Lightroom, for creating a BOOK for Blurb?

I am creating a book for publication with Blurb and all of my images have an exclamation point in the upper right hand corner.  Each has a different message as to what the ppi is and what it will print at.  All of my images are 300 dpi and 1000px at their largest side. What am I doing wrong?  My understanding is for print, 300 dpi is the best HQ resolution. Will I need to resize all in Photoshop and start over and if so, what is the best size for such a project?  Thank you.
    Amanda Wyn

Your problem is in the 1000px max, not the 300 ppi. 1000px photos are just good enough for small prints. There is no point in trying to print such small files, you need bigger than that, To find out the print dimensions just divide the number of pixels by the print resolution (the usual 300 ppi, but 240 ppi is usually enough for a quality print) . So you'll get a little more than 3.3 in if printed at 300 ppi, 4.1 in @ 240 ppi.

  • Why do images have noise/distortion in Aperture 3?

I am having disturbing issues with Aperture (3.1 and 3.24) Lately, I am finding multiple images in my libraries that are distorted–they either have bands of gray noise on them, or, seem to have overlapping bits from other images or large balck sections. Requesting a New version from master brings in the same issue. If I try to export, sometimes I get nothing but black, sometimes the image retains the distortion. (I have posted a couple of examples on flickr to show what I am talking about.. . (http://www.flickr.com/photos/njwight/8114245495/in/photostream   http://www.flickr.com/photos/njwight/8114225733/in/photostream )
Additionally, I have had messages when starting Aperture about " inconsistencies in the database and to repair it. " (I have had this a few times and I run as requested.) If I run a rebuild or repair (without the message) it runs fine and does not seem to find issues.
I have more than one library and this has happened in more than one, so it is not isolated. It has also happened on both my MacBook pro and iMac. The MBP is upgraded to Moutain Lion but I have hesitated with the imac as I would prefer to know what is causing thi before I upgrade teh second computer. It did start before the upgrade however.
If anyone has any ideas, I am all ears!
    Thanks
    NJ

Were these images originally fine or is this the first time you have looked at them?
Is it a few specific images that show the problems (and they show them every time), or is it hit or miss?
Because what you're seeing is not noise or distortion.  It looks like file corruption to me.  The thing is, Aperture never touches your master files.  So the most common cause of what you're seeing is a corrupt card reader, or corrupt cable or something when you import the files.  If you're 100% positive the files were once good, and have since been corrupted, it's worth exporting the masters out of Aperture and looking at them in Finder or via another non-Apple program that can read them (i.e. Adobe Bridge).
You say it happens on more than one computer.  Is it the same images have problems on both machines?  Because the 2nd most likely cause of this is a bad video card or bad video drive.  But if you're seeing it on > 1 machine that sorta puts that one out.
It's worth investigating what you're using to import the photos in the first place, though, because corruption at import due to card reader or cable is way more frequently reported than I'd have expected.  And, hopefully you *never* import directly from the camera.  That's fraught with peril :-)

  • Why the images have missed their frame stroke, once online?

I am working on my new website on iweb 09, and published a test, it looks very nice.
The only thing I don´t understand is why the images have missed their frame stroke, once online.
    What´s wrong, any idea?
    On iWeb, Inspector/Graphic/Stroke/Picture Frame

It appears that the Scrips folder for you site has not been uploaded or not uploaded fully. There are two files, iWebImage.js and iWebSite.js. Try the following:
1 - do a File->Publish Entire Site and see if the site works as intended. You may have to do a refresh on the pages a couple of times.
2 - next, in needed, publish your site to a folder on your hard drive. Mount your iDisk and go to the iDisk/Web/Sites/arkimo folder. Drag the two files above from the Scripts folder on your computer into the Scripts folder on the iDisk Then try the site again.
Part of the problem is the server, some files not loading the first time, and part is the missing js files in the Scripts folder.

  • How indesign detects that the images have been modified

    Hello,
My problem is that all my images links are seen modified (yellow triangle) while the images don't have been modified.
The modified dates are the same.
All my images are on a unix server and indesign is used on Mac.
How indesign detects that the images have been modified ?

    Thank you for your answer.
When you say the time stamp you talk about the modification date in the box link info ?
Because this date is the same on the image and in indesign and when I update the image this date doesn't change.
the only informations that change when I update the links are the import date and the state (modified become ok)

  • Muse 100% width elements and images have a small white gap running along the right hand side on mobile site

On the mobile version of my site all the 100% width elements and images have a small white gap running along the right hand side. This looks very unprofessional. There are no other elements outside the area. Any ideas anyone? All advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

    Hello,
I have checked you site on the phone and it seems that Zak is correct.
Please go to the phone layout and make sure there is no element out side the browser area at the right side.
You can simply do Select All to find if anything is outside the browser area. If you find anything you either need to delete it or you need to bring it in the browser area.
If still an issue please share he muse file with us and we will investigate it further.

  • My email messages have shrunk

Hi, folks.  For some reason my open email messages on my I Pad have shrunk down to the bottom right and I can't read them properly! Any help gratefully received.

Turns out its not an upgrade problem. The day before I activated outlook express email on my laptop and the default setting is to remove messages from the server once they have been read in outlook. So the program not only deleted all my read messages from my iphone but also from my webmail account. argh.
So the next questions is, can these messages be recovered to the server on my online webmail account or my iphone or are they only in outlook now?

  • My images have disappeared in iPhoto

    10.9.5/imac/2.7 GHz/8GB memory
Over 3/4 of my images have disappeared from iPhoto. Have been through all the usual iPhoto repair methods but absolutely nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
