My iMovie '08 project stops exporting without notice.
Here's my dilemma.
I have a 40GB video that I've edited in iMovie '08 (my Mac is quite old but it still runs fine...).
I'm running the project through my external harddrive that has plenty of space - over 950 GB.
I exported it through Quicktime with the settings:
Movie --> AVI (DV/DVPRO - NTSC) --> FPS 29.97 --> Best quality
Audio set to 48000 Hz
I have tried it THREE different times, each with a slightly different setting such as audio compression settings or even FPS, and all three times, the project stops at 33-34 GB. There is no warning, just that when I check iMovie, it LOOKS like my export was complete, but when I check the actual file, it's incomplete. The initial exporting progress looks fine. The blue bar is moving steadily and the time remaining sounds correct. I have run through the project to see if there were any flaws that would contribute to the export being halted, but found nothing. So what am I doing wrong or why is iMovie giving me so much trouble?

clip-2008-11-21 18; 37; 22 1 is not conventional nomenclature for imported clips, it seems as though this clip may have been imported twice and one of the copies deleted after it has been used in the project. Have you looked in the events folder for such a clip.

Exporting iMovie/iDVD project for PC friend to edit
I recently posted a question about how to take an iMovie/iDVD project and export the files so that a PC user could take the project and edit on his PC using a video editor. It was suggested that I share the iMovie project to QuickTime and then burn on to a CD. This sounded good at first but then I did some research and saw that sharing to QuickTime means that the quality will be lost (saving to CD setting) and will only be something like 320 x 240. Plus, it takes forever. Even longer if I set it to full quality but by that point, the file wouldn't fit on a CD anyway.
I did see that I could save the movie back to a mini DV tape and then give that to the PC person so that they could just bring it into their computer via their camcorder. But what if that person doesn't have a digital camcorder?
For the project in question, I've been asked to take some VHS tapes and convert them to digital. I've done so using a digital converter. They want a DVD of what was on the tapes, which I've done, but they also want the files so that they can later edit to their tastes on their own time on their PC and then later create a DVD. Given the above, what would be the best way to do this? Isn't there something in the movie project files that I can dump to disk?a) consider the usage of an ext. harddrive...
b) in iM's "share" dialog, you find the option "selected clips only"; so, select a few clips you like to export, check that box, done... you can "split" your clips at any point to create segments of approbiate size by hitting apple-t at any position in timeline..
c) share/Quicktime/expert options/click "share"/ offers you a dropdown menu, where you can choose the "avi" container...
(your User Interface is for sure english!)
you can click options, and choose the dv codec (which is your project's native video codec)... no loss of quality, and probably compatible for your friend..
d) a dataDVD-r fits ~20min of dv video... 4 disks?
e) using Disk Utility, make sure, you use a PC-compatible disk format....
f) Plan B) export your project back to tape, give your friend the miniDV... -
ICould sync cancel without notice?
Product Name: Macbook Pro with Retina Display Late 2013 2.3GHz i7
Operating System: OS X 10.10
Relavant App: Pages 5.5.1
Usually, When I am using Pages, I just save my work on iCould because it is easy for me to read it on my iPhone and iPad.
Yesterday, I found the document I just created does not display on my iPhone and iPad, and I just thought it is a network problem.
However, I restart my mac today......
I found I could not open recent files from dock. and when i open pages app iCould Drive disappear...
Then I went to system preference. I found iCould Drive is unchecked. then I recheck it, and pages start to sync.....
However,.... all the docs were lost since last time I reboot my mac.....
Anyone know why this happens?
It seems like, the iCould Drive stop syncing without notice. However, I can still save my work in iCould Drive on my mac. Then when I reboot my mac and the iCould Drive resync, all work will disappear...OK reading some of the other posts and checking my installation I think I understand why this is happening now -- during one of the iCal updates all of my "On My Mac" calendars which used to be synced with Mac.com (precursor to MobileMe) have turned into MobileMe calendars, and the entire On My Mac set is gone.
Now I do want everything synced properly so my calendars sync up between my desktops, laptops, iPads and iPhones (yes I have that many) but just because I want them all linked doesn't mean I don't want to keep the data on the devices/computers when a server hiccoughs and loses its link. There must be a local cache for these events on my computers and those shouldn't vanish when the sync is lost -- you should still be able to see them and convert them to local calendars if a sync is off. -
I'm having trouble with iMovie crashing when I Finalize Project or Export Movie.
Every time I Finalize Project or Export Movie my iMovie crashes.
This has only started happening recently, I was creating movies and finalizing and exporting with no problems before.
I'm doing exactly the same thing - creating simple short movies with jpg stills and an mp3. It's all working fine until I Finalize or Export, then it crashes.
Can anybody help, I've tried every thing I can think of. I've installed the latest version from the Mac Store, but it still happens. I'm on an iMac with OSX 10.7.5
The crash report is below

"I continued to talk to other Apple Mac users on iMovie….Interesting to have found out that their movies were made using iDVD without any known issues as yet…Looking at the results from Apple Support Forum and Youtube, problems appears to be when NOT using iDVD. I and many others can't understand how these many technical problems were overlooked by the programmers of iMovie. One would have thought iMovie problems have been iron out prior to getting rid of iDVD. By the way when I first contacted Apple Support back on 16th Nov, I was told I need to RE-INSTALL my computer…..that I did and in the process my iDVD was removed and never was re-installed.
May I suggest you delegate a junior person or someone string together a project consisting over near 1700 images, approx. 25mins of video footage, titles and including with and without transitions then export the project.
I am still in the dark as to what is being done about this extended non result. I am not sure if is known by the people who is in charge of this iMovie programme. it would be nice to get some sort of feedback. Not sure if I should refer this to a third party to do the testing?? I am sure Apple's competitors would love to make a mockery of this.
There has to be a time frame for this to end, as I and many others can't simply sit here in the dark and wait for someone to come back for a solution, this could be months or years who knows. As you can appreciate I am not the only user anxiously waiting for a solution.
I guess I am in a way representing other worldwide users in pursuing a solution on this matter ASAP. I therefore ask you to please make this a priority if this is at all possible.
Many thanks."
I've been corresponding to them since Fri 16th Nov on and off without a solution. -
Can I burn an iMovie 11 project directly to a DVD without using iDVD?
Is it possible, after finalizing an iMovie project, to burn it directly from iMovie 11 to a DVD without first exporting it to iDVD?
The project consists of old Super 8 movies that were digitized and imported into iMovie 11, so the quality doesn't start out very well; I don't want the quality to get any worse. I am looking for a quick way to share this file with family members who only have a DVD player.
Looking for answers quickly, as we just finished the project and my daughter want my daughter, who is leaving tomorrow a.m. to return home, to take it with her. Thanks for any help.If your movie is less than about 13 minutes, and you want super quality, forget iDVD. I found a way to create a super high-quality .mov file that fits on a DVD and you can burn it yourself, and anyone can play it. If you're willing to live with a slightly degraded version, you can put a 106-minute video on a DVD, and it'll look just fine to a group sitting in a room.
Having slogged my way through iMovie’s “Help,” online Apple Help and numerous blogs like this one with solutions that were frustratingly varied, hard to follow and even outright contradictory, I gave up and did my own methodical tests to see which combination of options and settings yielded the best result for creating a file on my desktop that can be shared.
Here’s what I worked with: I have a four-minute movie created in iMovie ’11, with nice titles and credits that fade in and out, and one-second cross dissolves in the film. The movie is 3x4 aspect ratio, not letterbox. Looks smooth and clean as can be in iMovie, full screen. (If it matters, I am working on a Mac OS 10.6.8; Processor 2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-core Intel Xeon; Memory 8 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3. I don’t see any “RAM” numbers for my computer.)
Tried exporting through Quicktime and not exporting through Quicktime. Most settings resulted in titles that were either fuzzy or were not clean and smooth during the fades, and often videos that were choppy and would freeze every second or so. Some had clean imagery and would play fine but got very pixilated during transitions (dissolves). Some that were much larger (higher megabyte numbers) and took longer to generate the file were actually of lower quality. Go figure.
Of all the tests I did, the best results came from doing the following. Here are two options:
For a small, convenient file that came to only 176 MB for my 4-minute movie, if you’re willing to live with some very slight image degradation and titles that show some slight compression during fades -- but looks perfect from across a room:
1) Share > Export using Quicktime > “Export: Movie to Quicktime” / “Use: Most Recent Settings”
2) Click “Options”
3) Click “Settings”
4) Compression: MPEG-4 Video
5) Frame Rate: Current
6) Key Frames: Every 24 frames
7) Frame Reordering -- unchecked
8) Compressor Quality: Best
9) Data Rate: “Restrict to 6400 kbits/sec”
10) Click “OK” and return to “Movie Settings”
11) Ignore “Filter” unless you want to alter the look of your video.
12) Adjust “Size” accordingly to your wishes. I clicked it, then selected “1920 x 1080 HD” and checked “Preserve aspect ratio using: Fit within dimensions.” This results in an image 1440 x 1080 (to fit within 1920 x 1080). Remember that if you don’t preserve your original aspect ratio you’ll get a larger/wider movie, but the top and bottom of your image will be cut off.
13) If your video is silent, make sure “Sound” is unchecked. I read somewhere that this speeds up the file-creating process.
14) Hit “OK”
15) Be sure to check where you want your file to appear. I chose “Desktop.”
16) Hit “Save”
That’s it! In my case, after about six minutes, I had a “.mov” file on my desktop that anyone can easily play (people may have to have Quicktime, though, as I understand it, but I believe that’s a free download; you do NOT need Quicktime Pro which costs $). I uploaded the file to a file-sharing site (Hightail) for others to download, and, testing it, it took me only a few moments to download (I have a FiOS fiber-optic connection, so if you don’t, it will likely take a little longer). The downloaded file played perfectly and suffered no degradation whatever from the one I generated to my desktop from iMovie.
For a super high-res version, if you’re willing to live with the size, the ONLY difference is No. 9: Change your Data Rate to “Automatic.” But as mentioned in the beginning, a standard DVD-R will only hold about 13 minutes of footage at this quality.
Oddly, this super-quality version took about the same six minutes to generate the desktop .mov file, but the resulting 1.44 GB file is far, far superior. You’ll be thrilled with the result!
The only downside –– to all of the file tests I did –– is that there is a slight loss of color saturation and contrast from the original iMovie imagery I worked with, particularly with the reds and oranges which become a bit muted. The blacks/darks came up a bit, yielding slightly less contrast. But these drawbacks are minor, to me.
If someone knows of a way to preserve the exact original color saturation and contrast, I’m all ears.

Export Complete iMovie '08 project
We are hoping to move an entire iMovie '08 project to a friends computer.
We first tried just moving the project from the iMovie Projects folder to the same location on their Mac, but the .avi files that were imported into iMovie from iPhoto did copy (nor are the stored in the iMovie Events folder).
Also the songs didn't seem to copy either (the songs were inserted into the Movie through iTunes).
Has anyone found any sort of easy way to export an iMovie project to another computer with all of the linked resources (that might be in iPhoto, iTunes, or wherever)?iMovie Projects are .MOV files. Once you create a Project it takes the clips from Events in whatever format they are in (usually AVI from iPhoto, DV etc. from the iMovie Events folders) and converts them to H.264 .MOV files. Once they are in a standardized, editable format, you can then overlay sound, transitions, and titles.
It sounds like you tried to move the files from the Events folder as located in the Finder. That will not be the integrated project.
Just select the edited clip(s), Control-Click and choose Reveal in Finder. That's the file you want.
If you want both the Event and Project files on another Mac, you need to manually find the AVI file via the iPhoto link in the Event Library. This is because (for some odd reason) iMovie cannot find the original clip using Control-Click Reveal in Event Browser for iPhoto imports to the Project Library.
Therefore, you need that same AVI moved via the Finder from iPhoto tot he other Mac's iPhoto.
A better editing option is to simply export all your iPhoto movies in AVI format to iMovie directly. That way the internal linking between the Project Library and Event Library works as it should. The iPhoto grab from iMovie is a bit of a kludge.
Hope that helps.

My projects icons turned to orange in Aperture? I must have pressed a button without noticing it. What does that mean, and how can I get them back to normal?
My projects icons turned to orange in Aperture?
Ana Candano, what is your Aperture version? Earlier Aperture versions - until Aperture 3.2.4 had colored icons, Aperture 3.3 and later are gray in gray. Do you have two versions of Aperture installed?
When you post back, list your version of MacOS X and the versions of any Aperture.app you can find with Spotlight on your Mac.
Frank, the thread you pointed to, was a different question, but probably is related. It would be good to know how it has been resolved. -
Sharing to DVD all my projects stops att 66 % - without error messages.
Sharing to DVD all my projects stops att 66 % - without error messages.
I'm a beginner in Final Cut Pro X. Not good at ¨computer terms¨ and computers so please take it easy when explaining.
My first three project was succesfully . (I then had no background image.)The fourth project (about 59 minutes) was at first successfully even with a background image. (But when I played the DVD on my DVD-player it stopped completely after 45 minutes, but went on when I tried to play it again, from the place where it stopped.) Then I replaced the background image with another and after that it stopped at 66 %. I read about the error -29 and made my image ¨smaller¨ but nothing happened. I also made the project shorter, about 57 minutes, nothing happened.
I tried a couple of completely new project from 2 – 20 minutes long – the same happened, it stopped at 66 %. (Read about deleting render files and tried that too without results.) I have a Mac OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion
Grateful for help after a week with problems. It’s a dancing project and people are waiting for the DVD…"What finally got it to work for me was Share>DVD>Settings>Backround; added a small jpeg, then removed. For whatever reason, it seemed to jar Create Disk awake."
Using this idea I didn't even add or delete an image, just opened the the Background window and closed it again.
This made one stubborn Project work/burn even with some retimed clips in it.
This action must flick an internal ON switch somewhere????
It's something simple but annoying. I have no idea where to look.
At least with a couple of extra clicks it's now working as expected.
Annamatilda might try the same to confirm the above??

Export iMovie '08 project to QT-how to get best quality?
Hi,
Attempting to export iMovie '08 project to QT file. What are the best settings? Here's what I've chosen, but it won't let me select anything better than "medium" for quality. Any way around this?
Compression: Apple Intermediate Codec
Quality: Medium
Progressive
Dims: 720x480 (853x480)I would like to know the same thing but not for another Mac... just another user. Should be almost the same procedure right?
My iMovie '08 is crashing like crazy! I just want to get the projects into iMovie using a fresh user and hope that fixes it. I can see where copying/moving preferences into the library of the other user (along with duping the projects in the movies folder) might succeed in opening the project in another user. I'm just afraid of moving bad prefs or something. -
Moved iMovie 09 project from one computer to another - now timing is wrong!
Hello,
I wanted to copy some Events and Projects from my Dad's older MacBook Pro to my iMac. So I just copied the event folders (from <Home Directory>/Movies/iMovie Events/) and the project files (from <Home Directory>/Movies/iMovie Projects/) to the corresponding folders on my iMac.
I then opened up iMovie on my iMac and saw that the Events and Projects were there. So far, so good.
The first problem I noticed was when I exported one of the projects from my iMac using QuickTime. The duration of the resulting .MOV file was about 30 seconds shorter than the duration of the project!
I watched the Project in iMovie, and found that the clips in the Project were 'cut off'. For example, the clip in the Project would say it was 10 seconds long, but when you played the Project the clip was only 7 seconds long.
How could this be? Is the speed of the Project somehow tied to the computer that created the project? i.e. perhaps the speed of the processor could impact this? I highly doubt it, as it would make it impossible to move projects from one computer to another.
Bottom line - the identical Project file on my iMac (with the same underlying events) will produce a different exported movie file than the exact same Project file on my Dad's laptop. Specifically, my version will be shorter and the clips will be cut off.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated....The macrumours link just telss you how to move the events which is relatively straightforward.
Alot of advice just seems to rest with leave the projects on your internal drive as they don't take up much space.
However, http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/im08tricks has a description of how to move the projects and then 'fool' imovie into where the projects are stored.
Not very flexible but it does allow you to 'clear' your macbook yet when you restore the sym-link file to the right place and restart imovie you can reconnect to all your old projects and events without yellow triangles of death appearing.
By the by apple needs to sort this out as archiving old projects and events together and preserve the editing is a really basic requirment I think.
PS anyone found out how to merge projects yet? Another basic function that seems to be lacking. -
Importing iMovie HD projects into iMovie 11
Are projects made with iMovie HD compatible when imported into iMovie 11?
I have imported projects made with iMovie HD into the latest iMovie 11 and noticed soundtrack and transitions were missing. Is there anything I can do to import iMovie HD projects without missing anything (music, effects, etc) in iMovie 11? thanksHi
iMovie 1 to HD6 - is one Application evolving
iMovie'08 to 11 - Is a wrongly named new Application.
That's why one can't migrate projects over with full compatibility - same as to FinalCut - will not work 100% either.
And If You aim to make a DVD as result - then stay in iM HD6 as this will give absolutly best quality when exported to iDVD.
iMovie'08 - 11 discard every second line resulting in 50% of the sharpness.

Burning iMovie 09 projects using iDVD
I have been searching without success to find out how several small iMovie 09 projects can be burned to the same DVD so that they run continuously. I don't want menu buttons. They will be shown at a trade show and need to move smoothly from one project to the next.
Each project is only about 25MB in size so I am assuming that many will go onto one DVD.
Mary LouMatthew, unfortunately if I export the movie to Documents and then import it into a new project, it loses the music.
There has to be some way to assemble small movies into one project so that they can be burned to one DVD.
I must be doing something wrong when I create a new iDVD project and then try to drag and drop movies into it. (They have already been through Share/Media Browser.) Perhaps I am not dragging them into the correct area.
I don't want each iMovie project to be in a menu item or someone would need to run the DVD every 3-4 minutes when one project ends and another one needs to begin.
I'm still looking for the solution.
Thanks for trying.

Trying to move iMovie '11 project and event to another drive
Hello,
I'm trying to move some iMovie '11 projects and their associated events to another hard drive, as my start up drive is full. I currently have projects and events on my startup drive and also on an secondary internal hard drive. That drive along with several others, shows up in my Event Library list. I have tried clicking on my project both with the Command key and without, to drag it to another hard drive that is listed in my Event Library. The hard drive does not "light up" and I don't get the option to "move project or move project and events." I've tried a reboot of the application and the computer. No luck. Is something wrong with my iMovie application? Or is there something else I can try?
Thanks!
CatherineHere is a writeup on how to do this.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
One thing to notice is that there is an error in iMovie help. It says to drag the icon for the project to the icon for the external drive in the Event library. This is wrong. You drag the project icon to the icon for the external drive in the Project Library. For the Events, you drag the icon for the Event to the icon for the external drive in the Event Library. -
IMovie for IOS Cannot export 60p despite iPhone 6 capability to shoot 60p
Hi,
iMovie for IOS Cannot export 60p despite iPhone 6 capability to shoot 60p
I am obliged to use Pinnacle Studio for IOS 8
I have bought a superb iPhone 6 Plus, shooting in 1080/60p, I cannot edit my clips to build a 60p Master.
I understand the choice for shared video streams to use 720/30p 5Kb/s from my 1080/60p 25Kbps clips as it has to be streamed even on small PC.
But if I want a master file 1080/60p at 25Kbps, and send it by mail with the superb new Cloud Mail to my mac mates, I cannot do it
I need a master hacker to poke this 60 number I nee somewhere into iMovie, it should be somewhere in the compressor frameworks used by iMovie in the app Package for exporting.
SAME PROBLEM WITH I MOVIE 10.0.6 FOR OSX YOSEMITE,
Best regards to the communityI appreciate you taking the time to copy and paste boilerplate responses to increase your points in this forum, but I've already read all those support articles in depth; but you have barely read my post at all. Please don't guess a fix. Only someone with the latest versions of iMovie, iOS, iPhone, Yosemite, and MacBook Pro is qualified to troubleshoot this, because anyone would immediately see that the following option no longer exists:
Open iMovie on your Mac, and choose File > Import > iMovie for iOS Project.
Read my post before you reply: It clearly says in the title and within my post that I can neither export nor import through iTunes without receiving an error message. So your response neither solved my question nor helped me whatsoever.
