My Indesign CS4 crashes when I open it, ow when I am exporting my work on my pc

I have had this issue now for a week and I am stuck after browsing for a solution on this online, basically I run a windows XP pro pc,  and my InDesign was working just fine untill last week, sometimes when i open a file  it crashes, sometimes it opens fine and crashes, sometimes it when i am exporting to pdf it crashes.  I am reli stuck as to what I can do, I have tried reinstall, I have tried to copy my Indesign files from my laptop to my desktop but still not working. I have tried to delete the preferences as well but no luck.
What else can be done, can anyone help pls.

Kind regards

Are you opening from Windows Explorer, i.e., double clicking the file in Explorer to open it.
Is it happening with every file or just one file?
Try opening it through InDesign rather than through Explorer
Try resetting your preferences http://www.creativetechs.com/tips/quicktips_64-one.html
Try exporting that file to a .inx http://indesignsecrets.com/indesign-interchange-format-inx.php

  • Indesign CS4 Crashes When Printing to PDF

    Hi all,
I've been having an issue lately with InDesign CS4 crashing every time I print to PDF. I've never had the issue before, but now it seems to happen constantly. I am running Windows 7, and when I print to PDF, my dialog box gets to "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" and then it just freezes and goes unresponsive. If I end InDesign through Task Manager, and reopen to try and print again, the same issue happens. If I completely restart my computer, reopen InDesign, and then print, it will work fine, for a while. This is happening with multiple documents. I am trying to avoid reinstalling, but may have to try that next.
When InDesign gets in its freezing spree, I've quit and reopened InDesign, then printed to a Postcript and Distilled with no issues, but the PDF printing still does not work.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
New to this forum, but I too have had a problem with printing a PDF from InDesing. what I have found is when my dialog box gets to "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" and it just freezes, whats actually happening is the 'SAVE AS' dialogue box has appeared, but is not the active window. When I ALT+TAB through my open applications, in Windows 7 it changes your screen to 'preview' the programs you flick through, and I find it there, attached to outlook, or the internet. Upon further investigation, it appears to attach itself to which ever program I click, after the initial "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" freezing.
So now when I PDF from InDesign and it freezes at this point, I click the Desktop icon (in windows 7 its the rectangle in the bottom right corner) and it seems to 'place' the 'SAVE AS' dialogue box here, where I can actually select it and click SAVE.
    Hope this helps?

  • Adobe Indesign CS4 Crashing When Printing To HP OfficeJet Pro 8500

Adobe Indesign in crashing when I select print. The only printer I have is the OfficeJet Pro 8500 (A909g) I am running the latest version of OS. (OS 10.10.1) I have uninstalled Indesign and reinstalled it from my disc. There is no update to the version I loaded. (There are newer versions of Indesign and Creative Suite) I reset the printers in system preferences. I have checked Software Update to make sure I have the latest driver. I am running  Indesign on my other computer using OS 10.10.1 so I doubt that is an issue. Other Adobe software prints fine. All other programs that I have print fine as far as I can tell. I have run diagnostic software without success.

    Hi,
Adobe might be a better resource to check a such, as any other application work as expected as you mention.
by checking its system requirements, it seems as CS4 is incompatible with Yosemite and that may explain a such:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/system-requirements.html#main_InDesign_CS4_system_requirements
As I can see only InDesign CC (2014) is compatible with Yosemite.
I would suggest trying InDesign's support communities below, there are more expertize users for a such:

  • Indesign CS4 crashing when opening excel

I am running Windows XP and when I have a document open in Indesign CS4 and I try to open an Excel 2007 document Indesign freezes up and becomes unresponsive. I have tried resetting the preferences, increasing the amount of virtual memory and the issue still persists.
    Any help would be appreciated.

What are your system specs?  Particularly RAM, you need at least 2GB to start multitasking with Indesign....  And do you have spare space on your hard drive?

  • Indesign CS4 Crashes When Importing Another Indesign CS4 File

Help! Every time I try to import an Indesign file into another Indesign file, my Indesign crashes. Also happens when I try to open an existing Indesign file that has files already imported into it. This is a problem because I have existing files I need to work on that I cannot open now!
I'm running CS4 on a new iMac running Lion 10.7.3. Everything is updated and current. My problem started when I transferred all my files via firewire from my previous iMac running 10.6. However, another iMac in the office running exactly the same thing is NOT having this same problem. So it's definitely something with my Mac, but I can't figure out what.
I have tried restoring the Indesign preferences by holding down all the Control, Shift, Option & Command keys. I have also re-installed Indesign CS4 from the original CD.
    Ideas? Thanks!

In case anyone comes across this problem, I think I've found a solution. Seems that Extensis Suitcase Fusion 2 was causing the problem. Extensis says Fusion 2 is not compatible with Lion. However, when I upgraded to Suitcase Fusion 3, I was still have the problem, though not as often. After contacting Extensis again, they told me:
This is a known issue with Suitcase Fusion 3. I can tell you a workaround and I have passed your information onto the developers so you're notified about a fix.
Here's the workaround:  You need to uncheck activate fonts in embedded objects in your Suitcase Fusion 3 InDesign preferences.  Here's how you do that:
    1)      Open InDesign by itself (no documents)
    2)      Go to the “Type” menu
    3)      Go down to “Suitcase Fusion 3” (it should show up at the bottom of the Type menu)
    4)      Choose “Suitcase Fusion 3 Auto-Activation Preferences…”
    5)      Uncheck Activate fonts in embedded objects
    6)      Load your document.
    Hope that helps someone!

  • InDesign CS4 crash when printing .."macromedia" apparent culprit..

(Sorry if this has found its way to the wrong advice Forum: I can't seem to find a way to the appropriate InDesign CS4 "Community" to post it in!)
My Mac version of InDesign CS4 version 6.0.6 has begun crashing when attempting to print.
The Crash Log shows the particular crashed thread to always include the line:
    com.macromedia.Flash Player.authplaylib    0x1c5ac2dd ExternalPlayer_Initialize  +  1864739
..which is repeated a further twice, with various similar numbers just before and after "ExternalPlayer_Initialize".
I assume that this is a problem with InDesign calling "macromedia.Flash Player" instead of Adobe Flash Player, but I have no idea where or how to modify the phrase "macromedia.Flash Player" to encourage the program to run correctly.
NOTE ALSO: That the program was installed on a Mac which had been lost, and was subsequently found and returned, but in the meantime we'd bought a replacement Mac. InDesign was then UNinstalled from the originally-lost Mac, and a full previous backup of that Mac was then restored onto the new Mac so that it was a complete copy of the original (..thus abiding by usage restrictions..)
After the program was restored onto the new Mac it longer Prints.
    Any help or suggestions, please?

    Thanks for your quick reply!
I'll hunt for pastebin.com and put a copy of the crash log there, and will reply here when I've done that.
Meanwhile, regarding restoring, it was the entire Mac contents which were restored, not just the Applications folder (..this was a new Mac which was being "cloned" from the previous backup..) so all the attendant files, hidden here and there, would also have been restored back to their appropriate places as well!
I'll go and place a crash log at pastebin.com now. Many thanks!

  • InDesign CS4 crashes when packaging

    Hi,
I'm using InDesign CS4 with 10.5.8 Mac OSX.
The document has been saved but i want to archive the current working version and repackage it under a different title.
Every time I try and package it the software crashes and ID has to use recovery software to reopen.
I'm guessing part of the file is corrupt, is there any way to find out which part?
    Thanks.

Start by trying to package without the fonts or without the links. Then divide the doc in half and see if either half will package. Keep dividing the half that won't until you isolate a page.
Have you tried cleaning the documetn by exporting to .inx? see Remove minor corruption by exporting

  • InDesign CS4 crashes when selecting New Color Swatch

Any idea why InDesign would be crashing when I select New Color Swatch?  I can Load Color Swatches or choose from the swatched in the menu, but if I try to add a new color it crashes no matter what type of document I am working on.

This is the sort of error, if happening in all files, that is usually fixed if you Replace Your Preferences

  • Indesign CS4 Crashing when preforming a "FIND"

    Running InDesign CS4 (6.0.5) on System 10.6.3
I have a document that's 215 pages.  I have to do searches in this document constantly. I can not preform a FIND because InDesign keeps crashing whenever I preform this task.  I've RESAVED the file, trashed my preferences, any ideas?  Please help!
    Thanks

Try removing InDesign's caches. Look for a folder InDesign/Version 6.0/en_US/Cashes and delete the (circa) seven files there. Depending on your locale you may have something different for en_US. (You could zip whatever files are there if you're nervous about simply deleting those files, but I've done that a few times without running into problems.)

  • InDesign CS4 crashes when placing Word document

    Hi,
I'm having a real problem placing a Word document into InDesign CS4. It crashes every time! I have found that if I disable the "import inline graphics" it successfully places the document. but enabling that option crashes InDesign.
I've tried saving as RTF, and even doing a simple copy-paste but the result is the same: InDesign crashes.
If you have an idea please let me know!
    Thanks,
    Ariel

Yes sir! The Word file that crashes CS4 is placed successfully in CS2. The saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind!
The only disadvantage is that each chapter is a separate file and in CS2 these need to be placed separately, whereas in CS4 (if it worked ;-)) they could all be placed in one go.
    Thanks Jongware,
    Ariel

  • Indesign CS4 crashes when exporting to pdf

Everytime I try to save as/export to pdf, Indesign just crashes. Instead I have to print to the pdf printer, then rename the saved file (untitled.indd.pdf --> untitled.pdf). Does anyone know what the issue might be/how to fix it? Thanks!

Could be a lot of things.  Can you export anything to PDF or is it just one document?  If you can't export anything try trashing your preferences, and try exporting a new document.  If it's just one document make a copy of it, then delete half the pages, try again, and so on to narrow it down to a page or object that is causing the crash.

  • Why does InDesign CS4 crash when exporting to PDF?

I have a 72 page document and when I export to PDF, it gets to the end and crashes. I can export to pdf in 10 page chunks successfully, but with 30 or more pages it crashes. Could it be temporary file or memory problem. Appreciate any help as I am new to InDesign and need to get this document to print soon.

This may be of no help to KodiKodi, but it may be of assistance to someone else trying to export large files to PDF.
I was attempting to export a large CS4 document (800 pages, 200 MB) on a G5 iMac (2.5 GB RAM), to a 3GB single-page PDF file. The export worked in one go.
Then, for a particular reason, I placed the entire PDF back into a new InDesign document which turned into a 800-page, 400 MB file, double the original size even though it was really the same file but in a different format. I exported that single-page InDesign file to PDF using the spread format, but it wouldn't export in one pass. Wouldn't do it two passes either. I noticed as the export progressed it got slower and slower. The export started at the rate of about 1 page every two seconds, but by about the 400 page mark was down to 1 page every 10 seconds or longer, but would never come to anything.
So, I tried exporting as 100 page chunks (2-99, 100-199 ...). Took about 2 minutes for the first 100 pages, but I noticed the export rate was slowing down. The second hundred pages took significantly longer than 2 minutes. I found I could get back the export speed if I closed the file after the first hundred, and reopened it (even though it was 400 MB, it would open in a few seconds), and then export the second hundred pages; and so on all through the file.
For some reason, closing the InDesign file must reset memory allocation or something like that, with the result that exporting to PDF retains it's normal speed.

  • InDesign CS4 crashes when I export for epubs

Every time I choose "Export book for digital editions...." in the book menu, the program sometimes (but not always) exports to the epub format -- but then InDesign crashes and closes.  Sometimes there is an epub saved; sometimes there is not.
This is the error message I get:  "Runtime error:  R6025 - pure virtual function call".  Makes no sense to me, and it happens every time, no matter what other programs I do or do not have open.
I'm running Win XP SP3 and have plenty of memory.
    Thanks.

Good morning (for me, at least). OK, let's try to catch up.
I am still not 100% clear what your actual problem is. Perhaps you can start by restating it clearly and unambiguously.
    Has it changed since June?
You might post a screenshot of the way you have the TOC set up.
But the first step is to figure out if it happens with a brand new document that is untainted by your existing document. Perhaps something in your current document is making InDesign misbehave. So make sure that TOC export works right from a fresh document.
After that, then the task is to figure out what about your document is causing the problem. Exporting to IDML is a good step to clearing corruption, but is not 100% definitive. But if it works, great. Other steps including using the Pages (panel) > Move Pages function to move pages between documents, and also exporting individual stories to InDesign Tagged Text and then re-importing them into new documents. You can also export some items as snippets, though this is likely to have the same effect as IDML, but somewhat more self-contained (think "IDML Export of this page only.")
In short, this is Divide and Conquer. The problem could be in a story, in a style, on a page, in an image, etc., etc.
Additionally, you might want to consider ponying up $40 and engaging Adobe Support: http://adobe.com/go/supportportal.
Unfortunately support for CS4 is somewhat waning (it is 3 versions old!), and Adobe Support is not always stellar at solving problems quickly. Still, they are an option to consider.
Also, I'm definitely not an EPUB person. Hopefully when you post the details of what exactly you're doing some of the EPUB folks will still be paying attention to this thread and can point out any obvious issues they are aware if ("Hey! It's a known bug if you use the letter é in your EPUB TOC! Just remove it and you're good!" or whatever).
    You ask:
Do you know what I can do to fix the stack problem?  Is that an Adobe problem or a Windows problem?  I'm waaay beyond the limits of my expertise here.
It's not a "problem" per se -- the stack is a data structure that stores state about functions calls made by programs. Under normal circumstances, when a program crashes -- that is, when the operating system detects that a program has done something it should never do, such as tried to access a region of memory that does not belong to it, the operating system forcibly terminates the program -- the stack reflects information about the function that was currently executing, and the function that called it, and the function that called it, etc., etc., typically 20-50 levels deep.
Depending on exactly why the program faulted, sometimes this information is not available. For instance, if the program failure that caused the crash involved corruption on the stack.
Often the stack can give us useful clues about the nature of the crash, and those clues can help us avoid the crash. Simple example: "Oh, this crash is related to the third party extension Frobozz Magic Font! Turn it off!"
I just posted a question about the corrupted stack in the Microsoft forum, and they replied only Adobe can fix it.  It's apparently not a Microsoft problem.
They are, to a first order, correct. When InDesign crashes, it's an Adobe problem. The stack issue is a low-level diagnostic and is unlikely to be a real problem. But certainly no one could fix it without altering the InDesign program, and only Adobe can do that.
I'm getting pretty nervous about this; I have clients screaming for their books, and I'll have to refund some money if this isn't solved.  Whatever you can do would really be appreciated!
I think you need to present us with a lot more information about your problem.
    Precise steps to reproduce it.
Screenshots showing how you have it set up.
Copies of files that exhibit it.
That we can try to reproduce it, see if it is specific to your machine or your document, give recommendations on how you can work around or avoid it, etc.
And seperately, aside from all of those things, is getting the problem fixed. Though if it happens in CS4 and not in CS5.5, well, then it's unlikely that a fix will be forthcoming. Adobe just isn't updating CS4 any more. They're hardly updating CS5 and CS5.5, and CS6 is on the horizon.
Oh, and if you're willing to throw money at the problem, you can look at upgrading. EPUB support has changed dramatically in CS5.5 (for the better, I am told, but I don't speak from personal experience), so it's likely that any problems you saw with it under CS4 will be very very different [and hopefully gone!] in CS5.5.

  • Indesign CS4 crashing when updating links

When I open a CS3 file in CS4, and choose to update links when opening the file, Indesign stops working when it tries to update the links. I am not able to cancel the request, I can only shut down the program in the windows task manager.
Anyone knows a way to fix this problem?

As a last resort, when I run into the weird problems, I go through a process of elimination to find the offender.
As example, I would delete half the images and try the update. if it works, I know the problem was in one of the images I deleted. If it doesnt, I'd delete the other half and try again. I keep cutting the number of images I remove in half till I'm down to whatever it was causing the problem. The I save it as a newfile type and re-import/place.
Kind of a pain in the tookas, but it works when I'm really stumped.

  • Indesign CS4 crashes when importing ai or pdf

When importing native AI files or pdfs ID crashes. EPS files import fine. These are just logo files with no fonts.
Any ideas? We cannot open any of our stationery as they keep crashing!

I have just opened another doc, 48pp manual, the same thing happens. The first three pages do not have .ai files placed on them, the fourth does. As soon as I scroll to the fourth page it quits unexpectedly. If I remove these files it will not crash until I get to the next page with the same file type.
I downloaded a demo of CS5 and this is fine, so is this a bug or have all illustrator file become corrupt all of a sudden??
    Anyone have a work around?
