My initial backup stops

I have an old seagate 500GB HHD which i cleared and formatted for use as my MBP back up.
During my first time machine back up it just stopped at about 4.53GB (out of roughly 175GB) i left it overnight but hadn't moved since then.
Today i emptied it again, checked the format type type etc, i also excluded a few things such as videos i has ripped onto iTunes and system files thus reducing my back up to 96GB.
However running an Initial back up again it has stopped at 4.07GB with the estimated time remaining increasing from 2hrs now to 6hrs.
Any ideas, i've tried googling it a using a help book i have with no luck.
Any help greatfully recieved.
Gareth

Have you updated to the latest Mac OS X 10.7.5 Supplemental Update 1.0? I know that this update addressed some issues with Time Machine back ups.

  • Time Machine Initial Backup - Partial Only

I have a WD external drive that was erased by Time Machine. But the initial backup stops at about 1 gig of data (out of the 38 gig that is there). Then schedules another backup in an hour. Why doesn't

    Hi!
Time Machine has worked for several months now but since yesterday i have the same issue. After reformatting the backup disk (file system was corrupt) time machine works but stops backing up after about 100MB.
    Cheers

  • HT201250 The initial backup is taking 2 days.  Can I stop and restart without any issues?

Just got an iomega external hard disk backup and the initial backup is said to take two days.  Can I stop and restart without any issues?

On a big backup, the initial estimate is often wrong and gets better after a little while. But, yeah, there is a "Stop backing up" command in the Time Machine menu, right?  That is safe as far as I know.

  • Had to stop initial backup. Is this an issue?

Had to stop it because I had to got to school.
Can it just begin where it left off?
Should I wait until the weekend to complete it?
If it takes too long, I may have to stop it again.
Often on the go cause of school.
    Is this an issue?
    It is connected wirelessly.
    Thanks,
    Marvin

i think if you stop the initial backup, it will have to scan the "sparsed bundle" TM file to make sure it's not messed up. then it can resume the backup. from what i've read, the scan takes a while.
as for taking a long time on the initial backup, i had about 100GB and it took about 5.5 hrs. i did the back up wired with ethernet to make it go faster.

  • Time Machine "cleaning up" in the middle of my initial backup

I am trying to backup using time machine to a brand new external firewire drive that I've just formatted. The initial backup is about 150GB and about 20GB of the way into the backup time machine stops copying and the status window says "cleaning up" and then things seem to hang indefinitely. I've already tried deleting time machine preferences, what's going on here and how can I fix?

Well deleting stuff won't help in the middle of a backup. Cancel the backup and re-prep the backup drive as follows:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Reconfigure TM preferences to select the backup drive and configure your backup preferences, then let TM do its work.
Note that before performing a backup you should be sure that the system you are backing up is clean. So I would consider some basic things:
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    ynchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Is Time Machine under Snow Leopard faster only for the initial backup?

A few days ago, I upgraded to Snow Leopard -- via clean install, manual reinstallation of apps, etc. So understandably, the first Time Machine backup to a preexisting store on an original 500 GB Time Capsule is going to be huge and take a long time. Apple claims that TM is 40% faster on the initial backup, but are there speed improvements as well? I was surprised by the slowness; I started it before going to bed, and it wasn't nearly done when I woke up:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1770

The throughput rate is quite variable, but at its best, it's only about 2.7 MB/sec. Is that to be expected, or would I have to start a new backup to see speed improvements?

  • Time machine backup freezes on initial backup attempt - any ideas?

I just purchased a Seagate 3 TB USB 2.0/3.0 external drive to use as my time machine backup drive.  I have a MacBook Pro that was purchased about 3-4 years ago.  The MacBook Pro has a 120 GB hard drive and is currently running MAC OSx 10.6.8.  I also have another WD 1 TB FireWire external drive that I use to store all of my media files.
After I followed the instructions for installing the new Seagate drive for use with the MAC OSx, I initiated a time machine backup.  It very quickly determined that it needed to back up almost 900,000 files totaling just about 400 GB.  It started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute.  In a little less than an hour it reach 53 GB and remained there for an additional two hours before I decided to stop the backup.
Once I got the backup stopped, I deleted the backup and decided to look at my energy saving settings.  I noticed that the "Put drives to sleep whenever possible" check box was checked, so I unchecked that option and restarted the MAC.  I then initiated the time machine backup again.  Like the first time it quickly determined that it needed to backup the same amount of data as before and started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute.  Before going to bed at around 11 PM last night it was at about 60 GB so I thought I was out of the woods (having gotten further than the 53 GB earlier).  When I woke up this morning at 5:30 AM it was sitting at 69 GB.
I am really frustrated at this point and don't know why the time machine back up would be failing on a brand new hard drive.  Does anyone have any ideas?
PS - I was previously using a Seagate 1.5 TB USB drive as my time machine backup and never had any issues with it.  I decided to use the 1.5 TB drive for a different purpose, which is why I have the new 3 TB drive to use as a backup.  And I still have the full backup on the 1.5 TB drive just in case anything were to go awry.

Your best bet is probably to deal with the kernel panics first;  whatever's causing that may be part or all of the cause of the other problem.
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software, especially kernel extensions.
Start by running this: Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test.  Run the Extended tests(that may take an hour or so, depending on how much RAM you have).  Write down any error code(s) it shows.
If that doesn't show a problem, see this Apple article: If “You need to restart your computer” appears
If that doesn't help, post a new thread about the kernel panics, with as much detail about what's running (or not running) at the time, etc.

  • Initial Backups Failing

I've tried to research the answer to this problem, but have found only advice for people who have had Time Machine work correctly for them before, and suddenly stop backing up correctly after a while.
+My problem is that Time Machine will not complete the initial backup.+ When I set it to backup from my MacBook Pro running 10.5.5 (just upgraded from Tiger a week ago, woo-hoo!) to my FireWire 500GB WD drive, the backup starts correctly. All is fine until it gets to a certain point, typically in the 6-10 GB area of backing up (that is, after backing up about 6-10 GB of data). At that point, an error message pops up, saying the backup could not be completed. If I tell it to do it again, it might back up an additional 4 or 5 GB, but then it stops again, and after that it only gets about 100 MB of additional data backed up before it just stops.
I have 80 GB of data on my internal drive, and hundreds of gigs free on the external drive, so space is not an issue. When I first encountered this problem, I did some research and found an article on this website by Apple to reformat the external drive. I did so, but it seems to have made no difference. I also later found some advice to, after a failed backup, drag the incomplete backup file from the TM disk to the trash and then start the backup over again, but that did not work either.
Does anyone know why this will not work for me? I can't even get passed the initial backup, and for me that is a little concerning.

    UPDATE:
I have been playing around (frustratedly) and I do not think the problem lies in the external hard-drive, but in the internal one. The reason why TM won't back up seems to be because of the files on my computer. I look through the console to find out what files TM stumbled over, and I've begun excluding them as they come up. First it was the system folders, then it was my Aperture library, and now it's my iPhoto library. More specifically, there are data files for specific photos in my iPhoto library that seem to be corrupt. The console tells me that TM stumbled on them, and when I locate the corrupt files in the Finder to delete them, Finder crashes before I can do so.
I'm becoming very irritated with Time Machine and my computer. Please help me get this to "just work", I know it's probably something I did accidentally that's causing this but I don't know what or how to remedy it.

  • TC freezes during initial backup

I have tried searching this forum for an answer to my problem with no luck. My 1 tb TC freezes during the same spot every time I try an initial backup. When the initial backup hits 690 out of 760 gb the transfer rate crawls to zero.
I have tried both ethernet and wireless connections, downgrading my firmware from 7.3.2 to 7.3.1 to 7.3 as well as resetting the time capsule and starting over. Other than this problem the TC works flawlessly. No problems with the internet, or accessing the drive and mounting the sparse bundle. Once the initial backup freezes at 690 gb I can manually stop the backup.
Does anyone have any suggesitons? Any help would be MUCH appreciated. I have been battling with this thing for quite some time now. I am using OS X 10.5.6 on a PowerMac G5. Thanks a lot

I have had a similar problem. I just bought my Time Capsule and everything was great until I tried to do the initial back up. It shuts down completely every time. Several tries later, and nothing.

  • Time Machine Stalls While Performing Initial Backup

I have a 2008 macbook pro 13" with a 320GB internal HD which includes a Bootcamp partition.  I have been trying without success to do a Time Machine backup on this entire drive.  The Time Machine setup includes a backup of all files with the exception of the Bootcamp partition which is grayed out on the Time Machine setup dialog.  My backup device is a portable usb 1TB drive.  The initial backup keeps stalling after an hour of two with 20GB to 50GB of 243GB backed up when it quits.  Time Machine says "backup failed."  The console logs for the past several failures are below.  Does anyone know what is wrong here?

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
That last line is the problem AFAICS; you are trying to backup a file or folder that you do not own. "UUIDs don't match..."
I suggest starting by running DU repair on all HDs and repairing permissions.
You might also see if you can exclude some suspicious folders or do a binary folder exclusion: ie:
Exclude half your folders. It you can backup, add half the remaining folders, etc.
If you cannot backup the first batch, exclude half of that first half until you eventually arrive at the errant folder. Then you can diagnose the cause.
Usually, however, repairing permissions fixes these kinds of errors.

  • [500gb Time Capsule] Initial Backup ALWAYS Fails

I picked up a 500gb Time Capsule the other day to be used as my main router in my house and to be my new source for my Time Machine files.
I began to do the Initial Backup to the 500gb Time Capsule, BUT EVERYTIME I run the Initial Backup it will fail and say "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. A network problem may have interrupted the connection between your computer and the backup volume.".
And here's the weird part; I also loose all connectivity to the Time Capsule as well. I loose internet, I loose the ability to access the network and when I run the Airport Utility it can't even see the Time Capsule until i restart both my Macbook and Time Capsule. The connection is still there though cause the green light where my network cable is plugged in on the Time Capsule is still lit up.
I have tried to reset the Time Capsule multiple times, format the Time Capsule HD (multiple times and even wrote all zeroes to the drive), ran the backup over wifi and a wired connection and still nothing works.
    Help please!

  • Time Machine doesn't acknowledge initial backup

I purchased a Time Capsule and quickly and happily built a new 802.11n home wireless network with it. Yay. Then I hooked up my iMac to the Time Capsule via ethernet to do my initial Time Machine backup, knowing that it would take a LONG time (~400GB). Well, it took about 3 days to complete (which seems suspiciously slow...), but anyway, it finished sometime in the middle of the night. In the morning I looked at the Time Capsule and sure enough, there was the big-*** "sparse bundle" backup. Time Machine seemed to be in the middle of doing a relatively small backup, about 140MB, which I figured were the changes since I began the initial backup a few days before. However, I wished to unplug the ethernet and let it continue wirelessly, so I did so. However, Time Machine seemed to just hang there with the backup no longer progressing. Since I could simply have it redo the backup a little later without any real data loss, I just stopped the backup mid-progress. I unplugged the ethernet cable and the world seemed well. Then I clicked in Time Machine to begin a new backup.
Of course, I expected this backup to be a rather small one, but I realized that Time Machine was about to begin another ~400GB backup! In fact, there was no information in the "Last Backup" field, so apparently Time Machine could not see the massive initial backup and was about to start all over again. Well, I am NOT about to wait another 3 days for it to do that, especially if the problem reoccurs, so I halted the backup and set Time Machine to "off."
Now, what to do? Why can't Time Machine see the initial backup? Why is it trying to do another full backup (very little data changed on my system in the 3 days)? Did my stopping the "hourly" backup somehow "break" things?
    Advice? Thoughts?

I'm not sure how the sparsebundle is identified by the computer, but if it is uniquely identified by the network connection used (ethernet, airport, firewire networking, etc.) then it could very well not identify the previous sparsebundle you made via Ethernet as being the one for your computer via Airport. I dont remember this being the case for me when I had my PowerBook backing up to my PowerMac via both Airport and/or Firewire networking, but I could be wrong...it was a while ago. Even though you seem to want to lean away from this, I'd recommend remaking it and just letting it go. You can use your computer in the mean time and allow the process to run in the background. It will pause and resume as the backup disk is available until the process is complete.

  • Slow initial backup to external HD

I purchased a WD 1TB 'My Book for Mac' and have it connected to my 1.8GHz G5 with a 500GB HD. I have partitioned the My Book into two equal halves; one for a complete Time Machine backup of my G5, and the other for any odds and ends I have lying around on other hard drives. This is the first drive I have used Time Machine to backup as I have never had a drive big enough to do so before.
So I have the drive connected to my G5 via Firewire 800, and copying large documents (1GB) to the other partition go through in a patter of seconds, but the initial backup process of Time Machine is taking FOREVER! It has done 600MB in the last hour, and has 300GB to go; at this pace it's going to be at it for a week.
Can someone tell me what I have to do to speed it up? - Keeping in mind I have not third party Anti-virus software.

    bobshled wrote:
    Thanks for the response Pondini,
I partitioned it using Disk Utility, and upon checking both partitions just then by going to get info, they are both formatted into Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Good. But is the *Partition Map Scheme* either GUID (Intel Mac) or +Apple Partition Map+ (PPC Mac)? Select the top line for the drive (with the make and size) to check.
I am using Microsoft Entourage, with 2 email address accounts containing probably close to around 10 000 emails total. I have read that large Entourage databases can mix badly with Time Machine, but I thought this was just to do with modifying the entire database file with every new email, resulting in a new database file backup with every Time Machine backup; not with actual backup speed (especially on the first run).
Correct on both counts. There are some ways to minimize the size of the incremental backups of Entourage, if that becomes a problem. With that much email, it likely will take a fair amount of space.
I have removed the other partition from spotlight as requested, and have actually seen a bit of an improvement to speed. It's now chugging along at almost a MB a second.
I assume you mean the TM partition?
As it is taking a long time, will putting the Computer into Sleep during this backup process simply pause and resume it upon waking it up again? I ask because the computer is in my room and the fans spinning can be quite annoying! I wont be able to sleep if its on backing up all night!
You can stop the backup, and TM will leave it as "in.Process" (won't display it via the TM interface), and should pick up there the next time. But if your first, full backup is interrupted, it will probably go through the lengthy "deep traversal" again. That could be an hour or more, and take most of your CPU, depending.

  • Time machine takes forever on initial backup, progress bar randomly resets

When I first tried to run Time Machine I was sure that it would be simple, as Apple Software generally is. I was warned by another user that the first backup might take a while, so I began the backup on a Friday night (the day my crispy new external 320GB Seagate drive arrived). When I went to bed it was on around 24GB of approx 65GB of data. When I got up the next morning, it had only backed up 27GB!
Another problem I had a couple of times was after the backup had been going for 3-4 hours it would reset itself and start all over again! In other words the progress bar got 50% of the way through and then went back to 0%. This was obviously extremely annoying, and prompted me to stop the process, reformat the backup drive and search for some more answers in the internet.
After a full Saturday of fluffing around, calling my friend who has Time Machine working OK and watching the little blue bar creep along at speeds like 1.5MB/s (according to activity monitor) I finally managed to get it to work!
I've summarised what I did below:
    _Formatting your Time Machine drive_
In the Disk Utility, select the drive and choose “Partition”
    Press the “Options…” button.
Use "Apple Partition Map" partition scheme if the disk will be used with Time Machine and a PowerPC-based Mac.
Use "GUID" partition scheme if the disk will be used with Time Machine and a Intel-based Mac.

    _Spotlight may interfere_
Turn off indexing for Spotlight on the Time Machine drive
    In the Spotlight control panel
    Click the privacy button
Click the + button and choose your Time Machine backup drive
This will mean that Spotlight will not try to index the drive while the backup is happening.
    _Excluding files_
In the Time Machine Control Panel
    Click Options…
    Do not back up:
Press the + button and choose the system folder
Choose “Excluded all system files “ in the dialogue box that comes up.

Are you running it over wireless or ethernet?
We particularly advise initial backup to be done over ethernet otherwise the job has this tendency not to finish. The fact is wireless has errors.. and error correction doesn't work very well during the initial copying.. TM does a verify of the backup once it finishes.. I think this is the 5sec mark.. and keeps building as it discovers files that don't match. It can also be spotlight indexing.  What it is doing is good.. doing it over wireless is very bad. It has to read both sides.. then compare then decide if there is a corruption to copy the file again.. then compare again.
It can also be a file is actually corrupt on the source disk.
My inclination is to kill it. Even if you have to restart from scratch.. over ethernet it copies at about 60GB an hour.. it should complete overnight with hours to spare.
Do a verify of the source disk before you start. And load in widget to get actual log messages from TM.
    See A1 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Pondini also has some stuff about backups taking far too long.
See D section in reference above.. also how to cancel a TM backup. (other than turn it off).

  • Time Machine 108GB initial backup about 2.5 hours

I had a few issues getting Time Machine to do it's initial backup.
Here are some tips that might help you.
    1) In System Preferences, Spotlight, Privacy, add the external drive so it will not be indexed (included in Spotlight searches). I would assume it's okay to remove that setting after the initial backup.
    2) Before doing the first Time Machine backup, do a Shut Down... and then press the power button to boot up.
    3) During the initial backup. Do not open the Finder. At least, don't open the Finder for the backup drive. When I did that, the drive would start thrashing and the data transfer would slow to a crawl. Not sure what the heck the drive was doing.
    4) With a WD My Book Premium 320GB Drive, connected via FireWire, I got about 0.7 - 0.8GB copied per minute. When the backup was running too slow, it was about 30 - 40MB per minute (that would have taken forever.)
    Here's the whole story:
I turned Time Machine on in the System Preferences and selected my Western Digital My Book Premium 320GB drive(connected via FireWire 400). I was already doing backups to this drive with ChronoSync, but there was enough room for it to do the backup of my system with room to spare. (I will free up more space by deleting that backup after I'm sure Time Machine is good.) Time Machine started doing it's initial backup and I noticed that it was going very slow... about 25GB after about 3 hours, which is pretty pathetic. I stopped it because the drive was thrashing like crazy and it didn't seem to make sense that it was doing that. It seemed like Spotlight might be trying to simultaneously index the drive, thus slowing things down. I added the drive to the Privacy setting on Spotlight, so it is now excluded. Then, I deleted the Backups.backupdb folder and emptied the Trash. After that, I rebooted. I then started the whole Time Machine initial backup again and it seemed to run much faster, so I let it go for a bit. I had about 25GB copied after about 30 minutes. Much faster. However, I decided to open up Finder and take a look at the Backups.backupdb folder to see what it looked like. After doing that and seeing the *.inprogress file, the drive started thrashing again and the copy slowed down. I stopped it again, deleted the folder again and rebooted. Started Time Machine initial copy again. Very slow this time. So, again, I stopped it, deleted the backup folder and this time, I shut the computer down. I let it sit for 10 seconds or so, then started it back up. Started the Time Machine initial copy again and it was going fast again. I think the shutdown cleared out something. ( a cache maybe?) Anyway, I made sure not to open Finder again during the initial backup and left it running. After about 2 - 2.5 hours, the initial backup of 108GB was complete. I just heard it do it's first hourly backup, which was basically nothing, because I haven't made any changes to anything yet.

Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. USB HDD attached to Extreme) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move any old TM backups (HDD connected directly to the Mac) to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.
