My Intel iMac is burning (literally) after Leopard Install

HELP!!!
I smell a strange burning smell coming out of the bottom of my Intel iMac! I've only been exploring the new features in Leopard for about an hour when I've begun to smell something like plastic burning.
Anyone hear of this? I'm scared.

Your computer is too old to run Lion, and therefore you will not be able to sync with iCloud. I think you can still use your email though from SL, but you would need to transfer your MM account to iCloud.
You won't be able to sync calenders or contacts through iCloud with SL, but you can view everything through a web browser.
If the syncing is not a big deal for you between Apple devices, then I don't think you have a lot to worry about.
If you do, I was in the same boat and bought a used iMac with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor and sold my old one. Didn't cost that much to be honest, and I am able to run Lion on the new (used) iMac. If you buy used, make sure the seller has the box and original install CD's and packaging. You can always meet the seller in an Apple Store if local to have it checked out.

IMac PPC script problems after Leopard install

Help please:
Hardware - iMac PPC 1.25GB system memory 80GB hard disc
Was running Tiger (fully updated) OK with no problems except hard disc getting full.
Did two things - upgraded to Leopard then moved iTunes content (about 38GB) to external hard drive (with hindsight realise should have moved the music first and done a clean install). I've got the external drive partitioned with Time Machine backing up to one volume and iTunes on the other. All seems to be working OK.
PROBLEM - can't run lots of third party software which previously ran OK eg Open Office (even after reinstall), Onyx, Real Player. Getting messages such as:
"<<script>> doesn't understand the <<event earsffdr>> message (-1708)"
A search suggests this may have happened cos the hard disc got too full at one point - or maybe it was the Leopard upgrade.
I've tried repairing permissions, PRAM zap, general clean-up etc. but no joy.
Should I reinstall Tiger as an "archive and install"? Or could I try doing that with Leopard so I can keep Time Machine? Or is this an excuse to buy a shiny new iMac?

why ould you reinstall Tiger with archive and install?! that will not work well. if you try reinstalling anything it should be leopard. do an archive and install of leopard. you'll have to restart TM backups but that's the only downside.

Imac screen will dim after leopard install

Since installing leopard on my imac the screen will dim a small amount after awhile and then when I star to use the mouse it will brighten up again. Is this normal with leopard?
My Mac pro dors not do this.

Ever since I installed Leopard on my iMac G5, periodically the screen will dim. This seems to be random, and not related to any specific program I might be running. The screen dims to the pre-sleep level, and doesn't brighten in response to anything I do other than sleep the computer and wake it again--no keystrokes or mouse clicks have any effect. I've tried everything in the Energy Saver prefs, and nothing seems to make any difference. Fortunately it doesn't happen all the time, or it'd be a real nuisance, but for that reason it would also be difficult to reproduce the effect for a repair person, in the event that it's a hardware problem. Has anyone else encountered this?

IMac LCD not working after Leopard install

So I have a family pack and installed leopard on three computers so far and they all took forever, so I went to install on my iMac G4 1.25, 1 gig RAM, and I got the install started and when I returned the screen was black. I restarted and nothing. I finally got the computer hooked up to a plasma I have at my house and sure enough the install went just fine. Long story short, my comp is just fine, the LCD just doesn't show anything. The vid card is fine if it shows up on an external monitor, the LCD is connected and functioning because I can adjust the brightness and that still works, just no video
I called AppleCare and was on the phone for, no joke, 1:37:39, WOW, took forever, the guy ended up telling me that it is out of warranty and I need to pay to have it fixed. Anyone have any ideas or what to do?

Anyone have this similar problem? or know what I need to do?

Imac G5 Sound problems after Leopard install

Hi All, This is my first post and I hope someone can help. I have just installed Leopard and on restart I now have no sound on any applications. I am also having some problems with my Netgear wireless router as the wireless card drops the connection on ocassions.

I am having the same problem but it's periodic. One day I went to work with some video and there was no sound so I hit the sound button on my powerbook, assuming I just had the sound turned off and the icon came up on my screen with the universal cicle with a slash through it indicating no sound. It was like this for a couple fo days and then all the sudden one morning my laptop "spoke up" by telling me the time. It has done that 2 additional times since there.
Any ideas why? It never did this prior to Leopard.

Help! External HD data lost after Leopard install!

After a quirky install of Leopard that included an error message for the install DVD itself, it seems that installation has been completed and this was confirmed by Apple CS. This install was on an iMac. Apple said to disregard the error message. It "appears" to have installed, but has been quirky on not shutting down when directed, and also not ejecting disks. No prior problems whatsoever with this machine -- before Leopard yesterday morning.
BUT, the external hard drive (Western Digital 80 GB) that was connected to the iMac comes up empty after the install. That's right, EMPTY! Critical client data gone! The only item on the disk is that dark gray icon with a yellow "exec" in the upper left corner (a Unix Executable File apparently).
Efforts to assess/fix External HD issue:
1. Disk utility reveals an error-free disk with no data (both permissions and disk repair). Same problem-free assessment by disk utility for the newly Leoparded machine, too.
2. Western Digital diagnostic says all ok with disk -- ran on another machine.
3. No data when connected to Leopard MacBook or other iMac running Tiger or other iMac in Windows mode.
4. Phone consult with ESS Data Recovery Specialist -- they think Leopard might have formatted the external. Note that the external didn't show up as an install option.
5. ESS Specialist recommended trying DataRescue by www.prosofteng.com.
My observations related to other related forum topics:
1. This issue appears different as others seem to have had luck plugging their external HDs into other machines with data recovery success.
2. This issue appears different as there is no discernable error with the external HD hardware itself.
3. The external seems to have been formatted by Leopard. Haven't seen anyone talk about this.
PLEASE HELP me figure out next steps:
1. Should I try Data Rescue on the external HD?
2. Is Disk Warrior different from Data Rescue -- better, worse, different? How? I heard DW is not compatible with Leopard but can be used when booting from the DW disk?
3. Should I used a data recovery service? After one of the above (DR/DW)? What is the best service to use in terms of effectiveness and price?
4. For the iMac...
a. Does it make sense to do an archive an install to make sure any issues with the quirky install
of Leopard are cleaned up?
b. I've noticed that I might also try a reboot in safe mode and then run disk utility again, or to
reboot in C.
c. The only 3rd party software on the iMac is flip-4-mac (.wmv compatibility in Quicktime).
Should I delete it?

I have read that you should disconnect all peripherals such as hard drives before doing an update and now I suppose I know one reason why.
1,2 and 3: DataRescue is a different program than DiskWarrior. DR is what you need here. DR will be way cheaper, in orders of magnitude, than a data recovery service.
4. An archive and install does make sense. Definitely remove flip-4-mac beforehand just to make sure.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Kodak 5500 - cannot print after Leopard install

Just want to throw this printer into the list of printers that do not work after Leopard install. I get a raster stream error. I have reinstalled Kodak software; deleted and readded printer, etc, etc,. Still now printing. Scanning works fine though!

Much to my surprise, I received a reply from Kodak a mere few hours after emailing them on Sunday morning. They advised me that a new version of their all-in-one printer software (1.2.0 Release 3) for Leopard will be available on the web on Monday, October 29th.

Fan problem after Leopard install

PowerMac Dual G5 - after Leopard install, fan between hard drive and optical drive revved up like the computer was going to blast off, faster and faster until I powered down by holding down the power button. Leopard seems to be working fine, but with the fan continuing to go at high speed at all times. I've tried reboot, reinstall, pull plug for a few minutes, remove CMOS battery, and zap PRAM, all to no avail. I haven't put the panel cover back on yet, and that may work, but I won't have time to mess with it for a few days and hope for some insight before I try that.Ideas?

Problem went away. Must have been a ghost in the machine.

After Leopard install I have 2 volumes of equal size

After Leopard install I have 2 volumes of equal size. One has Leopard and the other has Tiger. How can I delete, remove, or get rid of the volume with Tiger on it? As I have upgraded to Leopard how can tell which one I have, i.e., 10.5 or 10.5.X?

For some reason the Leopard installer kept your old Tiger partition instead of deleting it. It's probably your fault, but that doesn't matter...
Before you do this, back up any data you still want from the Tiger partition. Also rename it to something that will differentiate it from your other volume(s?). Also back up your Leopard partition before any of this.
Take your Leopard install disk, pop it in, reboot while holding C (or just click Install Leopard), choose a language, then from the menubar click Utilities, then Disk Utility. Once there, click your hard drive (not your Leopard or Tiger volumes) in the sidebar, go to the Partition tab on the right, click your Tiger volume's square (NOT YOUR LEOPARD VOLUME!!!), click the minus sign under that little graph, and click Partition. Then once that's done, drag the little resize line thingy on the bottom-left of your Leopard volume's square so that it fills up the entire area there.
If you can't make the Leopard volume take up the entire drive, you'll have to wipe the entire hard drive and restore from a backup. Yes, you will have to unless you're okay with having less space then you can. (Why can't GParted resize HFS+?!?! WHY?!!?!?!!??!)

Burning smell from my Mac after Leopard install

I think I've isolated the smell to a vent on the bottom left hand corner of the iMac. Anyone else get this or have thoughts on how to proceed? I have the Core Dual Intel iMac so I'm pretty sure it's out of warranty by now = (

This is rather ironic, and a coincidence, as I too have had a similar experience. Having been using Tiger for some now, I upgraded to Leopard the other day, however having done so a rather odd burning smell started emanating from the rear vent of Mac. Although not an iMac it is however based on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (Mac Mini).
It could be that the hardware started failing at the exactly the same time as the upgrade to Leopard . . . . but this is to much of a coincidence.
I was therefore wondering whether there were any changes to the hardware settings as part of the Leopard upgrade, e.g. firmware upgrade, changes to the performance setting, etc,.

New imac 24 inch unresponsive after leopard upgrade

I have installed leopard on all of my family's computers. My new 24 inch imac has become unresponsive after being on for about 24 to 36 hours. The only way to regain control is to hold in the power button for a few seconds and restart. The other computers in the family including a macbook pro, a G4 mirrored drive and an old ibook do not exhibit this problem. The imac is the only computer running time machine so I am wondering if this is what the problem is. I guess I can deactivate time machine and see what happens, however I like the time machine backup. Any thoughts?

Apple acknowledges there is a freezing problem with new 20" & 24" iMacs, most likely caused by the video drivers they shipped with. Apple released an update just today that MIGHT be the fix for the problem. Go to Software Update in your system preferences and download it now.
I had the same problem with my 24" iMac. It would lock up specifically when I was browsing a lot of photos through Preview. I installed the update and tried to replicate the freeze, but it didn't reoccur. Apple wasn't very forthcoming on what the update fixed, but I'm hoping that is it.

Intel imac - ethernet not working after SMC update

Hi All,
New intel 17" iMac - out of the box works fine using PPPoe, I do and SMC update, and now the connection drops. Its not my ISP, because it works fine on my powerbook, and desktop PC.
I tried reseting the SMC, but when I start the imac the fans kick in and don't stop, and the ethernet still doesn't work.
Any suggestions?

I'm experiencing the exact same problem. I just got my 20" Interl iMac back from the apple Store today (took it in for service Sunday because it started getting fatal kernel panics like crazy over the weekend.) They replace the logic board and tonight was the first time I had started it up since Saturday. Immediately got the update window, downloaded the firmware update then BAM... internet connection gone down the drain. The iMac is literally less than 5 feet from our wireless router and the signal strenght is dropping to 1 bar regularly (sometimes losing connection altogether.) This was never an issue before tonight. I've had the iMac since April and it has always maintained a rock-solid connection. In addition, just to rule out the problem being the router, I have a Compaq laptop sitting on the same desk as the iMac and it's wireless connection is over 90%, and my wife is surfing the internet just fine with the Mac mini on the other desk. This is definitely an issue!

IMac randomly shuts down after Leopard Upgrade

My wife's iMac randomly shuts down since we installed Leopard. It wasn't doing this before the Leopard upgrade.
It takes about 5 mins. of inactivity after the machine enters sleep mode, then it shuts down. We've searched the Discussions but have yet to see an answer to our question. Nothing but an iSight is plugged in to the machine. Any suggestions?

Same problem with random shut downs that get more and more frequent making the computer unusable. Took to Apple Store where they did not recognise the problem - tried replacing RAM then power cable then power supply. Said problem was fixed but started to recur within a short time of using it back home. Used install discs to reinstall the original operating system (Mac OS X 10.5.2) and the problem resolved - on upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.8 the problem immediately recurred. Have gone back to 10.5.2 now and all seems okay.
Seems strange that there are so many postings about this and Apple Store (Genius staffseem to be unaware of it as a problem).

Why would my intel iMac become unresponsive shortly after booting?

I have an Intel Imac 5,1 (late 2006) 20" with a new 500GB hd and 3GB ram. I'm running 10.6 and adobe cs 5.5. If i wake my computer from "sleeping" the screen comes on for a period of about 8 seconds then goes blank and unresponsive to peripheral input. To correct this, I have set the computer to never sleep. Now the problem has progressed so that when I try to boot the machine up, it will chime and invariably show the spinning gear (as it would during normal startup) however, after a few seconds, the screen goes completely blank and the computer won't continue the booting process. I have been able to get it to boot as normal on occasion, but not reliably and I'm worried when I shut it down that I won't be able to get it started again. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I have tried resetting PRAM & SMC for this iMac to no result....

The startup disk may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If necessary, click Repair Disk. You will need your install disc.
While you have the Disk Utility window open, see Capacity & Available at the bottom of the window.
Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.
