Do I need to do something to have it continue to update my old file instead of recreating a new one?

    Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
    If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
    If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups.  Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.

    I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

    Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
    I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
    So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
    How can I get rid of this error message?

    Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
    #1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
    Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
    Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
    Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
    Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
    Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
    Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
    #4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
    When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
    If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • 20 inch Intel iMac with 512 MB RAM:  is an additional 512 or 1 gB stick bet

    I have a stock 20 inch Intel iMac with 512 MB of RAM.
    I've read that this computer uses dual channel RAM, so I am wondering whether an additional 512 MB of RAM or an unsymmetrical 1 GB RAM stick would be better?
    Also, anyone know who makes the OEM 512 MB stick and where to get compatible memory for my iMac?

    "anyone know who makes the OEM 512 MB stick and where to get compatible memory for my iMac?"
    Regardless who made your OEM module, it will have a label with their name and the product specs (or at least a product number, which, on a page at their website, can be decoded for its exact specs).
    Mine was made by the U.S. company Micron Technology at their Singapore factory, and the label states that the module is lead free. A similar Micron module can be purchased online from Micron's wholly owned subsidiary Crucial Technology, which is their retailing arm. Retail customers can not order directly from Micron, just as they can not order directly from either Samsung or Hynix, the other two large OEM RAM manufacturers.
    "I am wondering whether an additional 512 MB of RAM or an unsymmetrical 1 GB RAM stick would be better?"
    I agree that more RAM is better, will make it snappier, and prefer to buy my 1GB stick of RAM from Crucial, as I know it will be compatible for my Mac and its OEM stick (regardless of the maker) as long as I use their online Mac selector tool.

  • Intel iMac with failed LogicBoard - can I use it as display for my MacMini?

    I have a Intel iMac with failed logic board (the display comes up while booting sometimes and sometimes, it doesn't). I bought a Mac Mini afterwards. I connected it to a Dell monitor with HDMI and the results aren't great. I experience interminttent video losses (Grains on screen every 1 minute or so).
    So, I am now thinking about using my failed intel Imac as a display. Will it work?

    No, the failed imac is dead until you replace the logic board.

  • What makes an intel iMac running OS 10.8 randomly freeze?

    I'm trying to help a friend who's having a problem with frequent computer freezes.  It's an iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 20-Inch (Aluminum) features a 2.0 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor.   When she uses Mac Mail, Safari, Firefox, etc., she's tried closing one app before opening another, trying to isolate the freezes by having only one app open at a time.  One or many, it makes no difference.  The freezes are related to no particular app and she has to do hard shutdowns.  They occur several times a week.
    These are the things I've tried so far:
    -added 2 GB of memory, it now has 4GB;
    -unplugged the external Seagate backup drive (that runs Time Machine) for days at a time;
    -performed a hardware check and repaired permissions with Disk Utility;
    -reset the SMC;
    -repaired the HD with Drive Genius 3;
    -rebuilt the directory with Disk Warrior;
    -booted in Safe Mode.
    The freezes continue to occur,except in Safe Mode, but since they aren't related to any particular app when not in Safe Mode, it's hard to know where to start to check for a culprit.  Sometimes, the top seems a bit hot.  Could it be temperature related?  My next thought is to download iStat Pro to check temps and also smcFanControl.
    Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

    What is the best USB powered portable 1TB hard drive for a macbook pro that allows Time machine to work, windows (thru Parallels software) and mac storage and is available in Australia?

    I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
    I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

    Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
    OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
    OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
    OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
                because it is three times faster than wireless.

    How do I upgrade the ram?
    The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.
    Crucial
    Other World Computing
    Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
    Revert to a Previous OS X - Yosemite
    Revert to Snow Leopard
    If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

    There has never been a reliable firewire ---> USB adapter suitable for external high speed storage.  This was a major issue when the MacBooks lost the firewire port a number of years ago (Apple subsequently brought it back).
    The only high speed port on the Air is the ThunderBolt port.  There are external ThunderBolt drive options out there, but they're somewhat more expensive than traditional USB/FireWire options.

  • IPhoto open with time machine - which photo is restored-edited or original?

    I want to know which photo is restored when I use time machine with iPhoto open.
    I understood that if you want a photo edited restored, you need to open in finder the modified folder and then use time machine. Is this the way to restore edited photos ? Because using time machine with iPhoto open I think I can only restore an original photo. Is this right ?
    Can you tell me when I restore a photo (using time machine) from within iphoto when the application is open, which photo is restored ? The original or the edited ? I tried several times to restore a photo with iPhoto open and the photo that is restored comes without any rating or flag (I confirm that is backep up, I can see in iPhoto within timemachine)
    What is the best way to restore photos ? For instance to restore a mail I use with Mail open. But with iPhoto is different ?
    Message was edited by: Pedro Santos

    I agree that someone should know the exact answer. I would assume the following happens. If you go back in time and select a picture from time machine by selecting the image from within an album, that you would get that image with any changes. When it comes back to iPhoto that the image you selected would be added to the library as is— that is to say, an edited version only. On the other hand, selecting to restore the library as you may do if restoring your entire picture collection, or library, or even in the case of an entire system restore using migration would bring the original image back in. I've not heard of any limitations with selecting from the modifies.
    However, I am not entirely sure and have not restored enough from TM for anything to know the ins and outs and do's and don't completely.
    One thing you could do that may answer your question would be to take an image and really edit it, back it up to TM, remove it from iPhoto and then go back and restore it and find out exactly what you get back. You could do this on a duplicate image. Report back on your findings.
    This is all that I can come up with.

    Even though you have 16gb of ram installed, 32 bit Windows can only use 4gb of it so 12gb is wasted.  This is the reason you are getting not enough memory errors and is a known problem with Lightroom an 32 bit Windows during export.   You need to change to 64 bit Windows.
