My internal drive is filling up by itself. cannot find any huge files.

my internal drive is filling up by itself. cannot find any huge files. backing up onto external drive which has room. OSX 10.6. created an external library for aperture to make space. created 32 gigs on my internal disc, down to 8oo megs overnight. when I disconnect from the internet the available space seems to stay stable. ran disc utility and fixed permissions. firewall was on. last software download was OS5 for iPhone which should not have any effect. any ideas? thx

now the space dropped from 5.2 to 4.77 gb within two minutes, while disk activity was audible. i looked at mail and one of my accounts with bellsouth was constantly running. i deactivated that account and the hd space went up to 4.89 and is now stable. what is that all about?

  • HT203322 Still having issues with installing Yosemite after deleting "Backups.backupdb" on the internal hard drive.  I have restarted multiple times and cannot find any other back up files, yet I still receive the same error message during installation.

I am using a 2011 iMac on 10.6.8. I recently downloaded the Yosemite upgrade and during the installation process ran into the "this disk is used for time machine backups". I ejected the external drive I use for time machine backups and turned off time machine in the application. I then followed the instructions of the help article (OS X: Cannot install on a volume used by Time Machine for backups - Apple Support) by moving the folder "Backups.backupdb" that I was able to find on my internal hard drive to the trash. I have restarted several times after completing this process. I am still running into the same error during the installation process. I have searched the hard drive for any other backups and I cannot find any. I searched the hard drive using the command cmd-shift-g and searched for “backups.backupdb” and was unable to find any folders or files. Any other suggestions?

I have resolved the problem - I did not actually delete the "backups.backupdb" folder, I only deleted the contents of the folder.  I must have only searched on the user account for the folder after I thought I had deleted it.  Thank you for the assistance everyone and I apologize for the inconvenience!

If you made backups of all of your photos and your catalog file using some third-party method (i.e. not using the PSE catalog backup command), then you should be able to restore everything.
Step 1. Put the photos in the EXACT SAME LOCATION as before. For example, if they were in subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents, then they must go into the exact same subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents.
Step 2. Move the catalog file to wherever you want it to be, and then double-click on it.

    Hi Samcat,
You can use a download instead of the disk as an alternative: Adobe - Download free trial version Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 | Adobe you can license with your serial
Please test the disk in another windows machine to check if it's caused by the drive or the disk. If you tested with 2 drives please start a support case, i assume Adobe will only provide downloads at this point. They are the same as the trials. If you still need a disk you can burn the trial to a disk as a backup disk. Good luck!

  • I just transferred my hard drive to an external but I cannot find the location of all of my photographs. A caution message pops up every time I try to open my library. HELP!

Hello! So i'm not super computer savvy so bear with me. I just bought an external hard drive for my ibook and I believe I transferred everything to the external from my laptop. But, I'm having trouble finding all of my photographs on the external hard drive and I'm afraid I've lost a number of them because I deleted a large amount once I made the transfer. When I try to open my library from the external hard drive, a caution message pops up. I've looked at a number of discussion forums and tried to open iphoto with the option key to open a different library but there is only one library available and it takes me back to the photo library as it is on my laptop hard drive. Any suggestions? Does this mean I lost the photos I deleted? And if so, will someone help me learn how to trasnfer files properly?
    Thanks!

  • IMovie cannot find the video files (external hard drive) but they are in the project?

As the integrated hard drive on my iMac is getting too small, I moved all my iPhoto files to an external hard drive.
I made a movie after this change and it worked perfect until I should finish the movie. Here I get the message the the media files are missing.
This is strange as I can watch the movie in the project in the iMovie library.
I cannot finish the move nor share it.
    Can somebody help me?
My imovie is version 10.0.3 and I am running Maverick.
    Thanks!

  • MBP internal drive failure causes external drive probs. Weird...

I've been booting off an external drive for some months now. I figured it would save wear on the internal drive, and when my boot drive eventually failed (the external one) it would be quicker and a lot cheaper to swap that out with another external one than to have to change the internal drive. I use FW800 and not seen any performance hit.
Yesterday (with the whole system booted from the external drive) it started going really buggy, everything was painfully slow - like, virtually at a standstill, and with a very slow wi-fi internet connection.
I tried rebooting. It would only boot from the external drive, and only if I held down the option key and selected a boot from the options that appear. Otherwise just the apple symbol and an endless twirly. It wouldn't boot from the internal drive +at all.+
Eventually I booted from the SL disk and ran disk utilities. To my surprise the internal drive was corrupted in some way and couldn't be repaired. I wiped the drive and restored it using Time Machine (stored on yet another drive). Everything then worked fine, except for the slow wi-fi.
So, +why should a corrupted internal drive stop the MBP booting from an external drive?+ This is worrying for me if the machine ever goes down at work and I have to rely on booting from another drive, which then might not boot properly and is buggy.
To complicate matters (or does it offer a clue?) this morning I booted from the usual external drive. It worked ok, but wi-fi was still slow. Another Mac here was showing the same internet slowness, so I figured it was maybe the ISP.
Then the MBP itself started going slow n buggy again. A check on the internal drive showed no return of yesterday's probs. On a hunch I unplugged the router from the mains and plugged it in again. The wi-fi then worked properly as did everything else.
+Why would a buggy router affect my MBP? Could it have corrupted the internal drive?? Why should any of that affect the machine's ability to boot from an external drive..?+
    Thoughts anyone?

    it's solved, thanks to clinton:

  • Boot Hard Drive fills up in a few days - can't find any data

This is weird. OS X server 10.4.11 on a G5 Mac has been running fine as a file server for ages.
It has 3 drives. The boot disk is 120Gb.
The other 2 are 250Gb each.
The boot disk as nothing on it and is not shared but it was completely full. I couldn't find any large files on it or anything that would be filling it up. The sum of the folder sizes add up to less than 20Gb.
So I formatted completely and reinstalled everything. Within a week it was full again.
It seams to be filling up with hidden files.
    What is going on ?

OK, when I show hidden files. I have found that the following files are growing right before my eyes...
    System.log
    mail.log
    asl.log
    log.smbd
Can I turn off logging. Any ideas ?

  • I have all my pictures in an external drive, how do i create a library in iphoto without using my internal drive space?

i have all my pictures in an external drive (around 1tb), how do i create a library in iphoto without using my internal drive space? thanks!

In iPhoto use the command "File > Switch to Library" and then click "Create New" in the Library Chooser panel.
Select a folder on your external drive as the destination.
You can also get to this panel by holding down the alt/options key when you launch iPhoto.

  • Mac pro losing internal drives after GPU upgrade

I've recently added a PC style 3GB graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660) to my early 2008 8 core mac pro.
Apart from living without the boot logo, this has worked very nicely...
But since then I've had some clicking/chirping noises, especially when running graphics intensive apps (e.g. Video editing, some 3D heavy games), and have subsequently lost one of my four internal drives (my iTunes media library), and another drive regularly 'ejects' during these periods.
Is this liable to just be drives failing, or possibly a psu issue, to do with powering this new card?
Has anyone else had issues running 4 internal drives, with a video card like this?
Any thoughts/suggestions would be welcome, thanks!

Beg your pardon, I've just checked again, and the card does just use a 6pin connector. Sorry got confused.
The card lists its minimum requirements as a 450W psu with min 24 amps on the +12V rail (based on i7 3.2 machine)
Does that narrow things down at all? For the record, with only 2 drives mounted at the moment, I still get the odd click from the machine when under some graphics load. Thanks for the replies.

  • Internal Drive not visible

A day after installation of Leopard, my second internal drive (bought from Apple) has disappeared from Finder and from my desktop. Applications that know that it is there (e.g., iPhoto) can open files on the drive correctly, Disk Utility can see it and says it is mounted and OK, and a second Mac running Leopard on my network can see the second hard drive. However, I cannot save any new files to it, since Finder (or the "Save" dialog boxes) do not show it. Also, it is visible, but greyed out on a Mac on my network that is running Tiger.
I called Apple and they suggested that if I reformat it it might reappear, but this seems a bit extreme. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. However, I didn't get a chance to try that, as I finally found another posting that addressed the issue a few minutes after I gave up searching and posted my own question. That posting was:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1208729&tstart=90#5705189
I used the suggested script to change the "visibility" attribute of the drive that had disappeared and it worked great.

  • Internal drive B missing after install of 10.4.4

I am building a test server with the latest dev seed of 10.4.4. The machine has drives in the two internal slots.
The 10.4.4 installation terminated normally without problems. Machine boots, is recognized on the network. Prior to this the machine was running OS 10.3.9 client, and the internal drive B was installed and configured under the client OS. DriveB has lots of stuff nicely organized. I prefer not to restore from the backups if possible.
After installation of the 10.4.4 Server, the internal drive B is not recognized by the Finder. Disk Utility sees the device but the volume icon is "document" not "disk". From the terminal df lists a mount point for the drive. Disk Warrior can find the device, build an alternate directory but cannot display the results.
The ownership and permissions for the mount point in Volumes looks odd to me.
    ls -al Volumes
    drwxrwxr-t root admin ..
    lrwxr-xr-x root admin driveA
    drwxr------ 503 503 driveB
I expected to find "drwxrwxr-t" and "root:admin" for driveB, as it is with another server running 10.3.9 Server.
I am tempted to change ownership and permissions, but thought it wise to see what others thought before I leap into it.
    All replies greatly appreciated.

    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Just in case someone reads this thread with a similar question, I have learned a few things I can share:
503 is a user id from the previous OS installation. Since the user does not exist on the new system, the files are not available to the users so far defined.
I was able to "cd" to the drive directories and move the data off the drive, when logged on as root. So the decision became 1) add users until one has a UID of 503, or 2) change the owner and group assignments on the files. I chose the latter, and all seems well.
Since I had a backup of the data, I did have a third choice of simply reformatting the drive and restoring from backup. However, the learning experience was worth the effort.

  • Panther server and share points on separate internal drives

I'm using an old Graphite G4 with OS 10.3 server. I've installed the system on a small drive, and want to set up share points on a raided pair of larger internal drives, but have not been able to find the way to do it, as server admin doesn't see the raid. Surely this can't be that unusual a setup...
    Clues?

IIRC, in 10.3 you use Workgroup Manager to designate share points
It's been a while, but from memory you open Workgroup Manager, connect to the server, then click the 'sharing' icon in the top bar. From here you can choose any directory on the system and setup the sharing rules.
