My internet is extremely slow

I recently just bought a new wireless modem and since then my internet has been really slow. Ive tried deleting all data, emptying cache, clearing history, and resetting Safari but nothing has worked. Any suggestions? Is it just a problem with my modem?

I had very slow web browser speeds until this fix worked for me.
Go to the network settings in the preferences pane, and disable IPv6.
See if doing that makes a difference.

  • Establish IP from DHCP but no Internet or Extremely Slow

Synopsis: Net Macmin, New Ethernet Cat 6 cable (approx. 90 ft), DSL Comtrend Router.  IP Connects, slow to no internet.
Added a 90' cable and ends across store basement from front PC to router in rear of business.  Standard non-crossover Cat 6 cable properly crimped.  Get IP Address from DHCP on front MacMini but internet is extremely slow.  I re-ran the cable away from parallel to power conduit, still extremely slow.  The light on the port which this cable is plugged in flashes at high rate with no pause, unlike three other connected to router.
Front MacMini works fine over wifi, but retail software recommended ethernet connection to ensure reliability should interference occur over wifi.  When I'm testing the Ethernet I do shut off the wifi and have, since started testing, changed the service order so wifi is second chosen to ensure tesitng with ethernet is accurate when wifi is on.
When you try to load a webpage (I used google) through safari it loads 25% of the load bar and stops until it times out a few second later.  Used network utility to verify connection to goolge, it took a few seconds longer than wifi but was able to ping google.  I don't own a ethernet tester and would rather not buy one for one project.
Based on the ability to connect with IP address tells me the cable is able to talk back and forth with the router, correct?  I've read a lot about ethernet port issues, how common is this, what else could be causing the problem?

Thank you to whomever can help and everyone that lends feedback!

My plan is to bring my MBP to the shop later this week to test this out.  I wanted to put this out there to see if any other troubleshooting ideas were brought up.  Thanks for the input!

  • Airport Extreme (time capsule model) internet speed EXTREMELY slow.

Hello, first thank you for any help on this as it is a bit frustrating for me.
I recently noticed my internet speed was running significantly slower on both my MacBook Pro and on my wifes MacBook.
I had my ISP come and check out the problem. They hooked my MacBook Pro directly to the modem and my speed went from under 1 mb to over 5mb.... he then had me hook up directly to the lan port on the airport extreme and my speed was once again back down to the 1 mb range. He concluded that it must be a problem with the speed once it hits the Airport Extreme.
He ended up giving me a different modem, its a 2wire wireless. I have since connected my airport extreme to the new modem and am still pulling down the same speed, but now I have connected directly to the new 2wire wireless modem and am getting my 5 mb speed.
Can anyone give me any help or advice on what I can do with my airport extreme time capsule so that I can get the speed I should be getting from it.
    Thanks again.

More information. I have a separate router for ISP connect/DHCP. I only use my Airports to create a WDS and bridge onto my home network. I have never allowed 2.4GHz or 5GHz phones in the house, just to limit interference. I live way out in the country so interference from neighbors is negligible to nonexistent. Speed testing done with Speakeasy.net/speedtest
I moved all the hard wired machines from the TC to my switch. Which will impact the speed of my backups, but it helped with internet throughput for those machines.
Then I split my WiFi into 2 separate nets, each with a connection to my home network switch. I created a b/g network with my ufo Extreme and my Express (NET 1). I left my TC set for n/b/g (NET 2). As long as my MacBook was powered off internet speed were nice and fast. As soon as I turned on my MB the speeds were impacted, not as bad as before.
I then changed NET 2 to be n-only 5GHz and retested. These was a small but noticeable impact for wireless machines but I have concerns because my ISP is wireless and runs at or near 5GHz.
I then changed NET 2 to be n-only 2.4Ghz and retested. Again a small impact for wireless machines whenever my MB was connected to NET 2.
I then had my MB join NET 1 and speeds were nice and fast all around. My solution, shutdown the wireless on my TC and use it as just a network drive while I use my old reliable b/g hardware for WiFi.
Maybe someday this Draft version of 802.11n will be finalized and have no issues.

Re: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgradein response to pacoKAS
SOLVED:  IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:
I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.
Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.
THE FIX:  FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device.  Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!
To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now!  :-)
Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.

  • Internet running extremely slow/hanging up

My mac is running extremely slowly while connected to the Internet. It sometime will get to a site and sometimes will hang up and time out. I have an older pc also connected to this wireless connection and it is running very sluggishly too. Can anyone help me? This computer is about a year old and I dob't know enough about it to try and fix things on my own. TIA!!

I am having the same trouble with my Mac. Once I am logged onto Firefox it is generally O.K. but if I leave Firefox and later try to connect again it won't load and I have to shut down the computer and restart in order to get back on the internet.

  • Internet suddenly extremely slow on windows 7 partition.

    Hello all,
Here is my situation: I am connected to the internet via ethernet, Im on a current generation iMac, and Im running windows 7 through bootcamp. About an hour ago, I logged in on my windows partition to find that my internet connection was running unnaturally slow. I tested its speed via an online speed test to find that my ping was an unexpected 479ms, where as, when I tested it on my mac partition, it was a mere 25m. The most peculiar thing about this issue is that im earlier this today (two hours earlier) my connection was perfectly fine.
The other piece of information I have is that on my windows partition, my connection will spontaniously die about 10-30 minutes after launch very freuquently. To restore my connection, about 70% of the time I can simply unplug and replug in the ethernet cable, but if that doesnt work, I have to pull a full restart. I've only noticed this on my windows partition, though I generally game on windows also, so its possible its just my cable, and I dont notice it while on my mac partition.
    Thanks for your time.
    -Will

UPDATE: I just checked and my connection speed has been miraculously restored to a ping of 30ms. Though if anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening, Id like to hear them in case this happens again.

  • New internet is extremely slow!

I had an engineer come out and install a brand new 2nd line in my home. The 1st line (that is managed by talk talk) gets 8 mbit down and 1 mbit up. Why is my new second line so slow compared to the 1st (The BT line gets 0.57 down and 0.04 up) I was promised at least 4 down and at the most 8.
The internet is now 4 days old and i have not seen any increase in the speed as at first i thought maybe this was normal but i guess not.
    Whats going on?

Sorry thats to small here is what it said.

  • My fios internet is extremely slow.

    My fios 50/25
Only early in the morning, the internet speed is usable.
The rest of the day, the internet speed is unstable.
After dusk, i can't send emails with attached files like an image file.
    The connection is lost.
I tested my internet speed as shown below.
When I tested my internet speed from verizon, lot of time there was an error message that said 'test timed out'.
I tried all the different servers.
Sometimes the test is an success but the speed is very slow.
I installed the optimizer tool and did all the other options like resetting the router, checking the wire, etc.
I used the internet for over 15 years but I can't solve this problem myself.

I'm having the same problem after dealing with support for about a month now with no resolution.
It's likely a PON card issue and it's a task in and of itself to get the Network Engineers or Tier 2 guys to accept that it is an issue and to take the steps necessary to fix it.
They will definitely wanna check the router, ONT, circuit, and other things first though so be ready for that.
Forum support team has created a ticket with them and I'm still waiting to hear back.

  • Re: Internet speed extremely slow (0.01 Mbps)

Im connected to EATIV, lost connection at 0940 roughly.  Got through to customer support who didnt have a clue.  She ran some tests, said she would contact me in 5 mins, no phone.  When i called back 30 mins later she had put on notes(tried to call customer on landline and mobile, no answer) so lied basically.  Luckily this next lady had a brain and said it was a southern england outage and that they are working on it.
However, i was on a BRAS profile of 7.15 and this loss of connection has dropped me to 6.5.
Another issue, had an engineer round on 21/2 to check out slow speeds (HH4 is awful at times) he said my SNR is too high at 11db (down) and should be at 6DB , he was amazed i hadnt dropped connection at all.  He said he would get it reset, it still hasnt been reset.  Much to my annoyance.
Still as is a little better, just got to get that SNR down somehow!

  • Totally frustrated - Internet moving extremely slow since update

Just started happening recently out of no where - I browse with Safari - but just realized it also happens with Firefox - takes forever to open a page - and forget it if even the simplest of multimedia, like pictures, happen to be on the page - for example a simple imdb.com page - and if i go to YouTube to play a simple 5 minute movie - well i can't wait long enough for it - could be twenty minutes before the thing will actually play without stopping every two seconds.
I feel like this started happening ever since I did my last updates which was for Safari... It is usually always something like that, being that once I installed a quicktime update, and all my videos lost audio - It was crazy. I thought updates were supposed to help! And apple does nothing about this stuff.
I have already "emptied the cache", "reset safari", and "repaired disc utility' - to no avail I should not have to be doing a ton of other stuff, and finagling with my computer in areas i shouldn't be, and don't understand, just to fix something that an update from Apple has upset. So frustrating!

    Hi Eww - Thank you...
Sorry, I thought I did say the update I did was "Safari" - Safari 3.2 to be exact on Nov 19th. This only started happening right after, that I know... And I am finding around the internet the same problem with no resolution. People noting a very similar problem since doing an update, some having done the most recent one (this very week's update which I don't even want to go near now), with more devastating results:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1804312&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8530167#8530167
I agree that it shouldn't be effecting Firefox - but it is... I don't claim to understand how that would work, but if things always made sense, we wouldn't constantly be needing to find "third party" fixes to things...
My hard drive is just above 100 GBs, and about half remains. no huge storage files have been adopted... I have not changed any network settings. I get a strong wireless signal, however, I am not sure what you mean by running OS X maintenance tasks- Could you please advise?
I have cleared the cache, reset safari, and repaired permissions on the HD...

  • Internet connection extremely slow in most applications

I have an aluminum iMac 2.4GHz. I also have an iBook G4. Both are on the exact same desk and connected to my universities internet connection.
The iBook can surf the internet fine, as well as download software updates with no problems. However, the iMac takes soooo long to open a webpage, and can only do it on half of the attempts. Using Software Update is a joke because it takes 5 minutes to download a megabyte, and then times out. Mail also has problems.
Stranger still, when I finally get to a download page to download some freeware, the download happens at normal speed.
When I restart in Windows XP, I can surf the net just fine and install updates and check mail.
I have opened Network Preferences on the iBook and iMac to compare, and they both have almost identical settings. Maybe this is where I need to look for the problem.
What can I do to solve this problem?

I have very little experience with wireless authentication protocols, so my answer is intentionally vague - hopefully someone can get you a better answer.
TTLS and PEAP are different authentication protocols used with wireless connections.
The first thing I'd try is to get to the network settings and try to change the iMac to use TTLS for authentication.
The WINS servers are kind of a strange happening...those settings will typically come from a DHCP server, is it possible that your iMac is holding on to DHCP settings from a different segment of the network you're on - have you tried renewing the DHCP lease (probably won;t help, but, you can try)

  • Internet pages extremely slow to load.

When I tap the safari app, I get a completely white page.  Internet pages take forever to load even with strong wifi.  This began after installing ios 7.

    Prof:
Please follow these detailed directions to clear history  from Safair which will result in faster performance of your internet. Good luck!
How to clear web history from iOS 7 Safari
Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
Scroll down and tap on Safari.
Scroll down and tap on Clear History.
How to clear cookies from iOS 7 Safari
Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
Scroll down and tap on Safari.
Scroll down and tap on Clear Cookies and Data.
That's it. All the web data stored in Safari is now gone. Just be sure to repeat these steps each time you don't want your web history to be visible to anyone else.
Also, remember that if you don't want to have to clear out web pages each and every time you use the iPhone or iPad in question, simply enable private browsing before using Safari and none of your web history is saved until you disable it. It's probably a more realistic solution when using a shared device.

  • Internet is EXTREMELY slow after computer has been in sleep mode (T61)

Pretty self-explanatory. I did a system restore to factory settings recently and ran the ThinkVantage system restore tool and updated everything. Now, whenever I put my computer to sleep, it fluctuates between going around 3 MB/s 5% of the time and around 0.01 MB/s the other 95% of the time when it's woken up. The only temporary fix is rebooting.

Yes, if the power settings have it such that "sleep mode" is disabled, then you're right; you shouldn't have a problem
I'm more interested in what happens if you explicitly force the system into sleep mode (via Fn+F4) and then wake it up. Do you still have problems with wireless performance? If not, then I'd suggest manually changing the Windows system standby setting to whatever you desire (5 minutes).

  • Extremely slow internet in vista ultimate

been having this problem since i installed windows vista ultimate. i had xp before on my imac 20" 2.4ghz and it worked fine. but since i installed the vista ultimate the internet is extremely slow and it would take an hour to open a webpage, if im lucky.
so far the only solution i have now is to restart the router everytime i switch from osx to vista ultimate. sometimes the internet is so slow i can't even access the router webpage (192.168.0.1). but in the meantime i can access it with my ipod touch no problem.
is anyone else having the same problem?
    hope to get some response.
    thanks a lot!

I encountered very slow network performance with Vista and bootcamp and this is what I found.
I have a DLINK DIR-655 router which I upgraded the firware to 1.10 (which supports 802.11n and some other enhancements). I did this for it seems that Vista was handing my DLINK Router. This router seems to work great on my iMac running Leopard in 802.11n mode.
Next I noted that the Microsoft Broadcom 802.11n wireless driver was being loaded in Vista/Bootcamp. I believe during some of the Windows Update that the older Broadcom driver was loaded.
I reloaded the driver located on the Leopard Install DVD and in the "Drivers" folder and installed the "BroadcomInstaller". This installed the Broadcom driver ver 4.8.75.0 date 1/8/07.
Then in the Driver properties in the Advanced Settings, I did the following
IBSS Mode set to "802.11a/b/g/n Auto"
Rate (802.11b/g) set to "54" vs "Use Best Rate"
This did not set my network to 802.11n but my network performance went from dismal to excellent. I tried playing with the Rate settings but it appeared that the IBSS mode did the trick. Now I can not wait until I can get 802.11n working.
    Hope this helps

  • Extremely slow internet conection.

Alright. I returned from holiday yesterday and found that the internet was extremely slow.
In an attempt to correct the problem I have tried a whole host of things, including speaking to a bt technical engineer via online live chat as well as consulting someone on the phone.
    Nothing has worked.
After speaking with my dad who was home, he told me that it has been like this for a week now and he had resetted the routuer once in an attempt to fix the problem. Personally I have reset the router maybe about 5 times today, including trying two other routers, and the problem remains. I've only recently learnt (by reading through these forum pages) that resetting the router is probably the worse thing you can do. That being said, the problem arose before the resets and not after.
After doing a speed test this is the result.
I've read something about waiting 3/5 days for the profile to automatically get up to speed, but that is simply unacceptable. Is there no way for bt to reset the profile at their end?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

your profile has dropped due to problems with your connection.  It may have had numerous resets by the hub itself while you were away and unless the stats are checked on a regular basis you would probably never know it had happened.  however then you started to try and get the speed back by resetting the router and changing for another and each time causing another reset.
this was seen by the exchange as a connection problem and the result was that your noise margin gets increased and you speed drops as the exchange tries to stabilise your connection.  the profile ends up set by the lowest speed during all these resets.
before the profile rises to match your new speed the exchange equipment waits 3/5 days to make sure your line is stable otherwise if your profile rose and there was still a problem it would drop almost immediately.
