The serial number is only useful in that you can report it to the police. it will not help you locate it.

If you registered it, Apple can help you. Give them a call.
Change your iTunes (Apple ID) password along with any other password that was stored in the iPod. The "Find my..." function is pretty much useless if the device is in the hands of a thief. All that is necessary is for the thief to connect to any computer with iTunes and "Restore as new."
The only real protection you have is with the personal information on the device rather than the physical device itself. Something as small as an iPod should have a strong 8-digit (or longer) password AND be configured for automatic wipe in the event of ten consecutive incorrect password entries.

I did not know about iCloud until after my iPad2 was stolen but I have the serial number so is there any way Apple/iCoud can help trace it when the thief logs into Apple's website /store etc? Thanks

iOS devices cannnot be tracked or located with just the serial number. Unless you shared your Apple ID and password with anyone, then your account cannot be accessed at the iTunes Store.

My iPad has been stolen. Someone broke into my house on Tuesday. I have already tried locking it through icloud. I have reported this to the authorities but they cannot do much unless I give them the serial number to the iPad. With the serial number they can put it into a database and send that inormation to pawn shops, so i the theie tries to pawn it, the pawn shop employeee can convscate the iPad and hand it over to the authorites. If your iPod was the last device that you connected to and synced with your iTunes library, there is a chance you might be able to get the serial # to show up in the Device Connectivity diagnostic report. See here for instructions on running this test.

You cannot find the ipod using the serial number. You can give it to the police, so if they find it they can identify it.

You can report it to the police and give them the serial number. Apple does not track stolen devices. If you did not have iCloud, Find My iPad enable, you cannot turn it on now.
You should consider changing any passwords, contact your bank or credit card company - whoever you need to contact - since much of your personal and/or banking information is probably on the iPad.

Launch iTunes, go to the Preferences, select Devices, and hover your cursor over the backup file for the iPod. That should show you the serial number.
Hope the police can find your iPod, though as I'm sure you know, the chances are slim. Good luck.

Where did you buy it?
If you know that and/or have a receipt (or can ask for a copy), they usually list the serial number on the purchase receipt (at least at the third party Mac store I've done buiness at). Or, did you register it at the Apple website - you should be able to look it up there. Or, do you have the box it came in - serial number is on the lable.
