If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

My ipad 2 will not update. I have looked at instructions which say go to settings, general and press software update ... there is no icon saying software update on my ipad... very frustrating!! Help

My iPad 2 is not charging anymore...
My iPad 2 is not charging anymore when connected to my iMac by original USB cable. Connection exactly same as before, still syncs and shows up in iTunes etc but just no longer charges.
The cable is obviously fine otherwise I wouldn't be able to see it or sync in iTunes and there's nothing wrong with the USB port as I have tested it with other devices. It's not going to a hub but directly into my iMac so that means either the iPad is stuffed or someone has changed something in the updated OS X 10.7 or iOS 7... Have updated to latest versions of all software but still no luck.
iPad in iTunes also shows no battery/charge info in the Summary or in the Devices in the sidebar.
Um, what the...?After checking my adaptor, USB cable and blowing debris out of iPad connector port, I still got the same message about the unit not charging. After a couple hours of research (and no useful suggestions from the Apple reps) I came across this solution: Go to settings on your iPad and turn the Airplane mode ON. Then turn the iPad OFF by pressing & holding the power button. Leave unit off for about 20 seconds. Turn the iPad back on and it should now show "charging." Turn airplane mode OFF and proceed as normal.

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
To update, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

Your iPad should be updated to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change - though google do have app versions in the store -

Your tag line shows iOS 6. If you are running iOS 6 you should have it in the settings. Your tag line also shows iPad - so if you have the iPad 1 - you can only update to iOS 5.1.1 and you need a computer running iTunes.
So if You do not have iOS 5 on your iPad you have to update by using a computer via the latest version of iTunes. You can connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Select the iPad on the left side under the devices heading. Click on the Summary Tab on the right. Click on Check for Update.
After you update to iOS 5 or later, you will have Software Update in you settings and can update via WiFi OTA.
