My iPad 1st gen crashes a lot.

When I first got the iPad, it worked great. Never crashed, very smooth and fast. Now my apps crash a lot randomly. I tried a lot. restart, hard reset (no, not wiping, just holding power button down), and it still crashes randomly. How can I fix this? It just started one day. I haven't installed any apps recently either, so I don't think it would be an application.
Thanks!

Hey Fire Bird, although your difficulty may be caused by something you can fix, you may also want to consider that there may be some causes that are beyond your ability to control them in a practical way. I encountered similar issues with my iPad 1 which is one reason why I went ahead and upgraded to the 3rd gen.
One reason apps may crash on iPads is that they run out of operational memory. That's not the same thing as the "Storage" you see in Settings / General / Usage: it's a different type of memory that apps use while they're launched and running. (It's a little more complex than that, but that's the general idea.)
As I understand it, your iPad 1 (along with iPad 2) has 512 KB of this RAM storage. Apple doubled this in the 3rd Gen iPad to 1 GB (1024 KB) of RAM, ostensibly to help support the increased demands of its higher-resolution display.
Over time, apps have become more sophisticated as features have been added, and sometimes that increases the memory that they need to run. The recent shift to support the Retina display in the 3rd Gen iPad has significantly increased the memory needed to manipulate images in most apps (one reason there's been a flood of app updates in recent months).
As you may have read elsewhere, these "improvements" for the iPad 3 can easily have an impact on those of us with older models, because the same app with the high-resolution images for the 3rd Gen comes in the update delivered to our iPad 1s. They're not displayed in their full glory, but they still require the same increase in memory regardless.
All of this increases the "pressure" on the limited memory resources of your iPad 1, and that can easily lead to your seeing an increase in the frequency of app crashes – even if nothing else appears to have changed. Even worse, if a particular app is "close to the edge" in terms of running out of operational memory/RAM, a faster processor can sometimes keep it from dying. (In computers, there's often a trade-off between how fast the processor/CPU is and how much memory/RAM a program needs.)
Not only is the processor in your iPad 1 half the nominal speed of the iPad 2 (which is about the same effective speed as the 3rd Gen iPad), but the 3rd Gen iPad has extra processing resources to stay ahead of the increased demand imposed by its higher-resolution display. Both the iPad 1 and iPad 2, then, lose a little ground because, all else being equal, they're moving a lot more data around inside them (for those high-res images.)
Believe it or not, all this is somewhat of a simplification, because Apple has engineered some pretty amazing mechanisms into their software to minimize the impact of all this extra image data. There's a limit to how effective those techniques can be, however, so you're bound to notice the differences in your iPad's behavior at some point.
As I mentioned in the beginning, this is what pushed me to upgrade from the iPad 1 to the 3rd Gen. I saw the same thing happening that you did and understood that it was most likely something that nobody could fix in the long run. It's an unfortunate fact of life here on the bleeding edge of technology.
So, try some of the things others are suggesting (or may suggest), but keep in mind that there may be only one way to solve your problem, unfortunately.

  • Crash after restoring iPad 1st GEN

    Hello all,
Okay, I have an iPad 1st gen and until today it had never been synced with a computer.
So I installed iTunes my entered apple id and password then began downloading the iOS update. (so far so good)
I synced and made a backup restore of ipad and began installing iOS update
upon completion of the installation which took like an hour or more, i was greeted with an error that  said it had failed to update and recommended restoring
it. So I obliged and started the restore process now the ipad wants me too set it up, thats fine with me.
Well partway through the setup it asks me for a sim and PUK number which I do not have because this iPad has never had a sim in it ever?
I run internet off of it using a Verizon MIFI box and now I cant finish the installation without a sim? it has never had one so what do I do?
The installation wont complete  without a sim so what do I do?

i think restoring your ipad should solve your problem! even i have an ipad 1! and it works absolutely fine ! the only app i have seen crashing is infinity blade( that to works in 2-3 times)!
also u can try hard rebooting your ipad!
and ur worry aboout apps being for ipad 2 and new! there are separate apps for them which you will be told while downloading that are incompatible with your ipad!
so i think restoring shoudl do the trick! first try hard reboot! i.e ipad power off!

  • IPad 1st Gen Apps Crashing (Mail, Settings, etc.)

Having problems with my iPad 1st Gen. OS 5.1.1   All Apps are crashing when trying to enter text in a "search" area.  Mail App, Settings App and other Apple Apps are crashing as they open.  Can't save any artwork to Photo Album.  Can't Transfer Files.

  • Some books form iTunes Store makes iBooks crash on iPad 1st Gen

I have had this problem only once before when I bought "The Fifth Witness" by Michael Connelly.
It would open to the first page and then automatically go back the the home page. I would try again and noticed the little dots at the bottom
move 1/4 to half way and iBooks would crash again! This became very frustrating as there is no explanation online about this particular
    problem.
Then my wife got her iPad 2 and I downloaded the same book to hers and it loaded without a problem!
The same thing happened this week when I bought "Foundation".. it just crashes on my iPad 1st gen but not on the iPad 2.
I have even tried closing all other aplications as to give iBooks all the resources my iPad has to offer, and the same thing happened.
I love the new iPad but cant put reason to buying a new one because there is nothing wrong with my old one.
From my experience it appears as though some of the books in the iTunes store are only compatible with the new generation devices.
This leaves the rest of us who have devices that are barely a year old to find other ways to use the item we have purchased for use on Apple products!
I know I'm not the only person having this particular problem. My wife and I own quite a few apple products. This is the only one that frustrates me.
    Apple please fix this one!

iBooks app has just been updated to v 1.3.1 ; Apple says it fixes some "stability and performance issues".
Launch the AppStore and look under updates .

  • IPad 1st gen iOS 5.1.1 crashes on all apps!

Several years ago I bought my wife an ipad 1st gen, which is still is mint condition, however last year it started to randomly close apps, safari....bloody everything really. I decided recently to get my wife the new ipad air and I took ownership of the 1st gen, I thought it might be crashing due to the amount of apps and memory use from those apps. I reset the 1st gen through itunes and loaded a few apps, problem is, it still closes apps and browsers after between 1 minutes and 5 minutes of opening. This is extremely frustrating as it kicks me out of work links through citrix and something as simple as reading the news on a website. The ipad has become a dust collector as such, since there appears no way of using this enjoyably.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thank you

I had synced with my computer on itunes before I did the update, but in my itunes I only see my apps music and photos. I see nothing about your calander on itunes.  I did not have the cloud untill this update, so it would not be there.

  • Should I upgrade iPad (1st Gen) from iOS 4.2.1 to iOs 5.1.1?

I am using iPad (Wi-Fi only) from last 2 years mainly for web surfing and emails. iOS 5 is sure slick and tempting. Should I upgrade or not? I dont want iPad to get sluggish after update, in that way I am better off with iOS 4.2.1 running smoothly on it. Help pls.!

    I dunno sabatoge.
It seems like it would be nice to have ipade 1st gen to get 6.0
But it would certainly help safari from crashing.     Still.
I wouldn't,t say that 5.1.1 is the LAST UPGRADE.          Apple might still do something.

  • Ipad 1st gen external cam?

so i bought the ipad 1st gen a month b4 the ipad 2 came out.. any external cam in the worx yet? if your wondering y i bought it is because i had no idea an ipad 2 was in the making

"i dont think anyone would buy this ipad since the ipad 2 is so much better and about the same price"
This is a really silly statement... There is nothing "so much better" about the iPad 2. Just like the 4s, the iPad 2 was a bit of a dud product (not innovative at all, despite what apple says about ALL their products.) There will be a lot of really big features in the both the iPad 3 and the iPhone 5, though! Save your money, and buy those when they come out early this year (as someone else mentioned, this is all predictable so wait to purchase things based on the cycles!) Look for key features like the screen resolution, camera megapixel count, flash/no flash etc. As far as the iPad 2 is concerned, I own an iPad 1 and never have I thought to myself "I wish I had a camera", thus save for 2 games I've encountered (requires iPad2) there is no limitation to having an iPad 1 over the 2 save for the camera. Clearly you were looking for this feature, so I get that you want a 2, but others WILL buy your iPad 1 as most do not need the camera

  • Photos not syncing to stream from 4s to iPad 1st gen

    Hi
I have an iPhone 4s 16gb and an iPad 1st gen 64gb. I'm currently travelling (so no access to my laptop) and trying to sync all photos from my phone to my iPad so I don't lose them when I get a new phone. Most have synced successfully but some older photos don't appear on my iPad at all? I don't want to lose these photos and can't think of a way to get them from my phone to my iPad!
Also, any suggestions how to store the videos from my iPhone as I read somewhere that iPad 1st gen isn't compatible with videos from a 4s?
Lots of travelling memories I don't want to lose!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Demo,
Yes, I have not made myself clear, I apologise.
I have tried downloading apps from itunes in order to set up a game for my son, when I go to click on a link, be this in itunes, or on the web, Safari revolts back informing the address is invalid. I read by coping a link and pasting into the URL, this would do it, but not so.
My goal then, is to install Minecraft for my son, I would then download an app to allow this but I am unable to get this far due to Safari insulting the address I ask it to go to

  • Ipad 1st gen: Pinterest no longer working in Safari

I have an Ipad 1st Gen.  I have been using Pinterest in Safari with no problems...until now.  When I try to go to the website in Safari, it automatically redirects me to download the app.  Is there a way to fix this?
I cannot download the app because my IOS is updated as far as it can go, and the Pinterest app requires an IOS higher than what I have.

Ii's not just 1st gen iPads. I have the same issue with my iPad 3. Whether I clickEd my bookmark or manually typed the Pinterest URL, I was immediate redirected to the app. I don't like the Pinterest app, so I deleted it. Now when I try to go to the website, I am redirected to the App Store. So frustrating!
ive complained to Pinterest via Twitter and left a one-star review in the App Store, but have not received a reply, nor have I been able to find a workaround. For now, I'm using Pinterest only on my desktop computer, but I really miss browsing Pinterest on my iPad.
if anyone figures out a workaround, please post!

  • IPhone 4s iOS 6.0.1 and iPad 1st gen. iOS 5.0. What do I need to do?

Wifi connection problem between iPhone 4s iOS 6.0.1 and iPad 1st gen. iOS 5.0. What do I need to do? I've reset the network on each and nothing. Please help.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button
