My ipad doesn't make sound

my ipad doesn't make sound when a notification appear, what can i do?

The side switch is the key.  Depending on your settings, it may affect the mute or it may affect the rotation lock.  Whichever function it supports, the other function is performed by a "soft switch."  This support article from Apple provides detail.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
In case you're wondering, here is the history.  Originally, the mechanical switch affected only the rotation lock and the mute was a software switch elsewhere.  In IOS-3, it was changed to be the mute switch and the rotation lock became a software switch.  This was done to ensure consistency among IOS devices.  Unfortunately, a large quantity of users complained loudly, alleging that they turned the rotation lock on and off several times every hour and the convenience of the mechanical switch is essential.  In IOS-4, Apple bowed to the whiners and made the switch function selectable and now we're stuck with a mess.
If that doesn't help, continue...
Try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • My iPad just all of a sudden turn to black and now won't open. It is on as it is beeping. Doesn't make sound or power symbol come on when plugged in. How can this be fixed?

Can any one help or tell me what to do to fix this? iPad just went to black screen and won't light up. It is on and is charged.

Have you tried a soft-reset to see if that gets it to boot up ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo will hopefully appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • IPad air keyboard  makes sound when volume is turned all the way down

My iPad air's keyboard makes noise, even when the volume is turned all the way down. Is this normal? If so how can I turn off the keyboard typing noise without disabling entirely.

Aloha Raptorcheese, Good news, if you have you have change with buttons turned on you can control the keyboard volume with the normal volume control. No need to go back to settings all the time.

  • My phone doesn't make sounds in the lock screen and won't take calls

Hi, for the past 2days my phone no longer plays the alert tone in the lock screen for text messages, calender events, facebook events, voicemail atert etc however does if the phone is unlocked and I am using it. Also, nobody can call me without it going straight to voicemail however if they call a second time then they can get through and it rings.
I cannot find a thread where anybody else had a similar problem.
I have turned everything and off a couple of times and have checked that everything is on (i never turned it off) and have done a hard reset. All I can think off is to completely restore my phone to factory setting but I don't want to lose all my stuff!
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks everyone!
    J

Do you have Do Not Disturb enabled?
Have you checked the position of the Mute switch on the left side above the volume buttons?

  • My ipad doesn't

My ipad doesn't  play movies from youtube anymore also it doesn't make sound during  a app, i've tried everything i could image the problem could be but nothing helps by the way i'm dutch so if you're from Holland please answer in dutch.

Thanks for your reply.  To answer your questions, Yes, Yes and Yes.  We even did a restore on the iPad, because all wi-fi was lost for a bit..  Now wi-fi is working again.  IPad sees the JetPack, but when we attempt to connect we get a message that says we cannot join the network (or something silly like that).  Verizon Support put us in touch with support at Apple and they ran us through the paces to try and get connected, but nothing has worked so far.  We're going to try and use the iPhone as a hot spot and see if that works.  If you have any other ideas, we'd love to hear them.  Thanks

  • Since the iOS 7 update, some apps no longer have sound, even of configured to do so. Example, no longer does my FaceTime ring even if I have a tone set; my email app doesn't make a sound when email comes in or goes out. Help!

Ever since I updated to ios7, sounds from specific apps has disappeared, even if configured correctly to make sounds. My mail doesn't sound off anymore when mail comes in or goes out. My FaceTime no longer rings when someone calls me. My map app no longer gives me voice instructions like it did before. If someone messages me I do not hear sounds anymore. I find it very annoying especially because I have family abroad and FaceTime is an important means of communication. I reset it by pressing the sleep and home button and all, nothing happened.
Can someone help understand how to resolve this problem.
    Thank you so very much.

    (A) Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    (B) Make sure sound is not muted in Control Center; tap on the little bell. Swipe upwards from bottom of screen to launch Control Center

Try restarting your iPhone by holding down the on/off and the home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, double check the volume button just in case.  If you still can't hear the tones go into your settings>sounds and make sure the options are on.

Try this First... No Data will be Lost...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons..

  • My iPad doesn't sound?

    My iPad doesn't sound?

After some tinkering, I have found that that was the problem.
I had the setting for the side switch to lock the rotation rather than mute.
This worked fine for locking and unlocking screen rotation but had a strange effect on mute.
Whether it was on or off, system sounds were muted.
Therefore, I changed the setting to Mute instead of Rotation Lock.  This got me back the sounds.
Once I knew system sounds worked, I then switched Rotation Lock back on and, hey presto, everything OK.
Never even noticed the Mute icon to the left of playback controls (double home and swipe right).  Perhaps that would also fix it.
Thanks for your pointer JimHdk - you were a great help.

  • Why doesn't snap chat make sound notifications

I have notifications turned on in the settings, sounds and banner. But for whatever the badge shows up but it doesn't make a sound or vibrate.

Snapchat app for iPhone does not appear to have the functionality to use sound or vibrate for notifications, so there is no way to get them. This is an issue/complaint many have against the app.  very Unfortunate / annoying, maybe some changes will be made in the next updates.

  • On my Facebook app, when I get a notification my iPhone 5 and my iPod touch 4 doesn't make a sound. Help???

Hey guys! I really need help! Ever since I got my iPod touch 4, my Facebook app will not make sounds for notifications. I now have an iPhone 5 and it does the same. I have the sound set to on as well as vibrate but the ringtone I set only plays when I post something via notification center.  It lights up and blinks(led flash for alerts) but not a sound. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have the same problem since I updated to iOS 7.0.3. and althought all my notifications are turned on to view on lock screen, I don't get any push message notifications. Previously with iOS 7.0.2, I got push message notifications from news apps, gmail, viber, whatsapp, hangouts,... so I re-installed the backup with iOS 7.0.2.
Since several months, I see the same problem recurring for a lot of people with the older iPhones 4, but it seems like Apple Support doesn't care. None of the help requests are reliably answered.
Today I called Apple Support, but as my Iphone is "old", they can't provide me an answer unless I pay for it. They also told me that the problem is app related and not system related but I don't see it that way. Why is everything working well in iOS 7.0.2 and not in iOS 7.0.3?
Kayler2, I suggest that you re-install the backup with iOS 7.0.2. and you will again be able to get notifications.
I sincerely hope that someone has a better solution for this problem, but for now, it's the best we can do.

  • I'm confused about sound on my iPad 2. I know it has speakers and it makes sounds for notifications, etc. But when I play the Time Warner TV app, there is no sound. Do I need to buy speakers or headphones?

Here is my situation, iPad 1 Time Warner app works fine with or without headphones, ipad2 I can unplug headphones and it works but when headphones are plugged in I can barely hear it even cranked up, my husbands ipad2 works fine with both so what that tells me is that there is something physically possibly programmed differently.  It really makes no sense.  I might just take my ipad2 back and swap it out.  It is weird all the other sound through the iPad comes through on headphones and speakers fine.  You are not alone with your time Warner app sound issues.

  • E51 doesn't make a sound!...

    Hi,
my E51 doesn't make a sound since yesterday
nothing to do with profiles or settings
it just doesn't make a sound
when you connect it... when you get a message...
formated it, but still the same...
could it be a loudspeaker fault!?...
(still vibrates, but I don’t need it as such!)
    Thanks

    thanks.
I managed to revive the speaker for a brief moment after one of many firmware flashes / hard resets. (But I didn't realize) I only noticed when I went back into changing the alarm ring tone and it actually played the tune. when changing to the next tone - speaker died again.
No luck reviving the sound since.
Problem seem to happen when changing "clock alarm tone" via offline apps / clock / options / settings.
But I'm now convinced that its a software problem. Hopefully the local repair center will replace phone as well...
