My iPad first generation is slow and crashing

MY first generation iPad is very slow and crashes. I have closed all apps, erased cookies, rebooted, etc. i am only using 2.2 gb of 64. Help!

If you have performed all of the basic troubleshooting steps that you have indicated, you should probably backup your iPad, restore to factory settings and then restore the backup to the iPad. If that doesn't help, then restore as new and see if that helps.
You will obviously lose all data when you restore as new, but you can download or sync all of your content back to the device and take it slowly and methodically reloading yoyr content and see if you can pin down one particular app that is causing problems, if any at all.
If that still doesn't help, make an appointment at an Apple Store and ask for those help. I understand that have ways of restoring devices that are a bit more involved than what we as users can do with iTunes.

  • My Macbook Air first generation is slow and applications don't work!

Last week, I woke up to find that my macbook air (first generation) has completely frozen. I went ahead and tried many keys such as esc, etc. until I decided to press on the power button for a few seconds until it restarted. Next, I found an empty screen with nothing but the apple logo on it. I was patient but nothing happened, 3 hours into the wait. I went on the apple support communities and followed a few steps to reboot and ended up with a blue screen, with my start up slowly starting. Ever since, everything takes about x50 the amount of time it takes to do anything for example, when I click on a file, it takes x 50 times longer it takes to open the file or empty the trash, etc. I've tried opening any application to try and back up so I can do a format as they call it, but I can't open any application such as Mail, etc.
I am not a computer software/hardware literate person but I can understand what's going on and how to follow steps suggested by IT/apple experts. I have also done a hardware check up on reboot and everything is fine with the hardware.
Please help me get my macbook air back.
    Thank you.

Two other factors that could impact performance like that .... reduced memory and a too full hard drive/SSD.
If you click on the apple on the menu bar, and about this mac, does it show you the memory size  you expect to have, ie, 2GB?
If you can, bring up the Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utlities) to see if anything is hogging the CPU.
On your hard drive/SSD, how much free space do you have?  You need 5GB minimum with 10% to 15% being better, for systems usage. Less than that can really slow the system down.
If you can, bring up Disk Utility (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) and do a verify disk to check the disk status.
You could reset PRAM ... won't hurt and 'might' help
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
You should be able to run the Apple hardware test by disconnecting any devices, leaving the power adapter in, and reboot holding the D key down. Run the extended test.

  • I have an ipad first generation.  I am trying to connect to a linksys router and it is not finding the wireless network.  what do i need to do?

I have an ipad first generation.  I am trying to connect to a linksys router and the ipad is not finding the wireless network.  What do I need to do?  Thanks for your help.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • Ok so Christmas is coming up and im debating about whether getting a ipod touch 4G or 5G or ipad first generation?

Ipad first generation or ipod touch 4g or 5g?iIhave already had a 4g and broke it and thrown it away. I wouldy really love to use a ipad but im not sure. By the way im only 12.

If I may ask, how did you break your iPod Touch 4g...?
I just bought an iPod Touch 4g and an Armored Case to give my 8 year old grandson for Christmas.
He has been using my iPad 1st gen for almost two years (under close supervision) and I'm hoping that he will respect the new iPod Touch as much as he does my iPad.
I can think of more than a few problems with a 1st gen iPad,
    1. it can not be updated past iOS5
    2. it is heaver and harder to haul around in your pack pack
    3. it is harder to hold onto and crashes a lot harder on the floor than a iPod Touch
So on that note: I think that you should put another iPod Touch and an Armored Case on your wish list.

I almost forgot, see > Refurbished iPod - Apple Store (U.S.)

It appears from these forums that a lot of people are having the same problems wit this latest update.

    Hi erastyle,
Actually the Licensing information for the package is missing hence it is not launching any applications. You need to Reserialize the products using APTEE which you can find it on the Machine where you have created the package. If you dont have the access to that Machine then please download and install Creative Cloud Packager and it will download APTEE in the below mentioned location.
    Windows:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\CCP\utilities
Once downloaded please follow this KB article to use the Tool.

Please let us know if it helps.

WHen I first installed iOS 6 the App Store crashes...and now having iOS 6 for 2 weeks now, all my apps are buggy and now are crashing! Safari and built in apps are becoming slow and crash. I hate how apple leaves iPod touch 4g and iPhone 4 in the dark and basically force us to upgrade to newer devices. Apple could of done better with the update and needs to resolve these issues.

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • HT201263 I have restored my iPad (first generation without retina display) and it finishes restoring software but will not stay on for me to restore the data and then shuts off whenever I try to turn it on. I don't believe that it is charging! HELP!

Long story about what happened but basically I was using the iPad (first generation without retina display) to watch TV at one point it had 20% battery so I plugged it in then it wasn't charging and I didn't realize so it got to 5% and shut off. I plugged it in to charge it but it just kept shutting down and showing the apple logo, then briefly showing me my home screen before shutting off again. I waited a while to see if it would charge, while it continued to turn off and on by itself. Finally, I unplugged it to see if it had gotten any charge but it just told me to plug it in again. I plugged it into a different charger, same thing. I decided to try connecting it to a computer and it stopped turning on but it did not seem to charge. I tried restoring it as it said in the article. It worked until it got to restoring the iPad from the backup that I had because it immediately shutdown before I could continue. I tried to restore it a second time but still it shut down! I'm so frusturated and I cannot afford to get a new iPad, I need it for school and there is no Apple store for 80 miles nor do I have any insurance or warranty on it! (Obviously considering it's the first iPad to ever come out.) I really don't know what to do! HELP

Trouble with slow Macbook Air. I have first generation MacBook Air and have a hard time keeping hard drive from being full. After trashing many docs, I have almost 5 gigs available, but mac is slow and I keep getting color wheel when I use Mail. I'd like to install Lion, but now I'm afraid it will slow down my machine even further. Do I have enough free hard disc space? Is Mail problem related to free hard disc space? Thanks for your help!

7gb of free disc space is required to install Lion.  Read this about how to free up disc space: http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html.  Also, advice on how to speed up your mac: http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/25_ways_speed_your_mac

  • I have an Ipad first generation with IOS 5.1.1. and I have just got a new ipad mini. Should I use the back up of the old Ipad from Itunes copy to configure the new one, or it is better to configure the new one from scratch?

I have an Ipad first generation with IOS 5.1.1. and I have just got a new ipad mini. Should I use the back up copy of the old Ipad from Itunes to configure the new one, or it is better to configure the new one from scratch?

Contrary to the opinion above, I see no reason whatsoever why you can't set up the new iPad from the backup of the old one. Obviously you will have app updates to make and complete and that sort of thing, but if you want to retain all of your app data and device settings (some of which will change because of the updated iOS), I would certainly restore from the backup first.
If you find that to be problematic, you can always start all over again.

  • After installing IOS5 my iPad runs slower and crashes often when I have safari or any application opened. Is apple working on fixing this issue? is it happening to most of you or just me?

I appreciate any information you can provide. Using this device is getting annoying !

I'm using mine right now to answer you and I've not had the issues you are having. Have you tried a Restore from Backup?

  • My iPad 2 is really slow and app crash every time after IO8 update.

After the IO8 update my iPad is no working well. too slow and crash constantly.

Sorry, downgrading is not supported. I'm running it on an iPad 2 as well and it certainly is not as snappy as it once was.
Look into background app update, background app refresh. Notifications, not just in the notification center but in the apps themselves as well
also  look to closing unnecessary programs. Double tap the home button. Flick the previews for any unneeded apps up and off the screen then single tap the home button to exit the mode.

  • I can't find app for iPad first generation! Why ?

I Had an iPad first generation  and I can't find app under iOS 5.......why And sometime m'y IPad close alone.

Apple requirements now ask to make them for iOS 7 and above. iPad 1 has become outdated and there are barely, if any, apps available for this device.
If your iPad restarts on it's own, try restoring to factory settings.

Will ios 6 ever be available for IPAD first generation?

It's probably due to the RAM and processor limitations.

  • Can I update my iPad first generation to ios 6?

iOS 6-- can I update my iPad (first generation) with it?  It appears I cannot, but I want to make sure.

No, unfortunately not the 1st gen iPads... The new iOS 6 will run on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5; the iPad 2 and third-generation iPad; and the fourth- and fifth-generation iPod touch.
    Hope this answers your question.
