My ipad is not going past the logo screen and it shuts down when I have battery, then it says I need to charge it. I am charging it but it isn't charging. Then my ipad isn't charging (doesn't say not charging) I've tried everything!

First, my ipad wasn't charging. Then it shuts down when I have 7% battery, now when I turn it on, it says to charge it. And when I do charge it, it doesn't work. Now, I did it once it worked. Now I can't get past the logo screen and when I do it shuts right off again. Please help!

Hi InternetHogger,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know that situations where you cannot boot your iPad and cannot charge your iPad can be very frustrating. In this situation, I would recommend using the attached article as a reference for troubleshooting.

Have you tried starting up in Safe Mode? If not, I suggest that you give it a try. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.

  • Emac not going past the 1st screen

This is actually a question about my mom's emac. It has power, but will not go past the first screen with the apple - the circle goes round and round. We have tried starting with the shift key down but nothing happened. My mom has had a stroke and is in a wheelchair and taking it for repair will be very problematic. I am hoping that there are things we can try first. (She is in Missouri and I am in Alaska). Thank you for any advice you can give.

Mine is doing the same thing, except I don't have the circle turning round and round. It just sits there.....useless. I have tried to boot in safe mode and nothing works. I am ready to try and wipe it clean and start over with it. Mine is a 1.0 ghz. I've checked the serial number and it doesn't match up with any that were supposed to be faulty. Mine is an old machine - purchased over 6 years ago.

  • Macbook not going past the grey screen

Im really bad with computers, but my problem is pretty much that every time i try to power up my macbook running leopard it stays on the grey screen with the apple logo and the wheel jsut keeps spinning, I've tried reseting the SMC and just using the reset bottons, but nothing is working, can anyone help?

You will have to reinstall OS X. See the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Continue with installation. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • HT1414 My iPad will not progress past the home screen. My computer will not let me back it up. What can I do?

My iPad will not progress past the home screen, and my computer doesn't allow me to download my data from it. What do I do? I wanted to try to restore it, but I don't want to lose my "stuff".

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here. You WILL lose your "stuff" with Recovery Mode.

  • I have a Macbook and I left it unplugged. It started up slowly when I plugged it in again, but it seemed fine. Once it started charging I shut it down so it would be easier, but now it will not go past the grey screen with the apple. What do I do?

I have a Macbook and I left it unplugged. It started up slowly when I plugged it in again, but it seemed fine. Once it started charging I shut it down so it would be easier, but now it will not go past the grey screen with the apple. What do I do?
I have Snow leopard on my computer, and I tried to do a hard restart as an article suggested, but it did not work. I also tried cleaning out the PRAM.
The only things I did last night:
-cleaned the history of Firefox out, including cookies
    -let it unplugged all night
-plugged it back in the morning, it took a long time to figure itself out, but eventually the time was correct and I got on the internet for a bit
-shutdown the computer since I was going out and thought it would help the computer charge
-came back, tried to turn it on, and found that it would not go past the grey screen the apple on it and the spinning wheel even though I left it for 20 minutes or more
-tried turning it off and on to no avail

Before doing a reinstall, which may not be needed at this point,
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.
    Then Repair Permissions.
No need to report any Permissions errors........we all get them.

  • Ipad 3 on 7.0.4 will not go past the passcode screen after bootup

hi all.i have ipad3 on 7.0.4 and it willl not go past the passcode screen after bootup without restarting This happens immediately after i press the fourth digit of my passcode (yes the correct code is used) It happily sits at the initial lockscreen working seemingly perfectly giving me the usual notification etc. but as soon as i swipe the screen, bringing up the numeric keypad and enter the four digit pin the screen goes black and then it begins its bootloop scenario all over again. i would dearly like to fix this WITHOUT needing to resort to taking a chance opn IOS 8 yet because it seems to me that it should be avoided at the moment until someone resolves more of the many big issues people are complaining of currently, and in their wisdom apple have chosen to stop signing any ios 7 restores recently so i cannot restore or upgrade within the realm of IOS 7 its IOS 8 (the farce continues) or nothing. Thanks in advance

Try a reboot press & hold power button & menu button hold both down until you see Apple Logo Then it may restart. Millions of people run ios 8 only a few having problems. Bsydd uk

  • My ibook g4 took a install from apple update . Why is it not going past the screen where is shows Mac OS X

My ibook g4 took a install from apple update . Why is it not going past the screen where is shows Mac OS X

Did you verify the hard drive before installing the update? You could have had hard drive corruption where the computer did not know where all the files are and something didn't get installed correctly.
Did you repair permissions?  The installer may not have been able to overwrite a file if the permissions on files were not set correctly.
Frankly, the easiest thing will be to re-install the operating system from the installer disc.  While booted to the disc make sure you run Disk Utility First Aid to repair the drive and permissions, then install.  Many of us prefer to download updates from Apple rather than rely upon Software update. we use SU to tell us what we need but we download them separately.
For which operating system was this update?  Apple hasn't brought out a new system update for G4s in quite a while.

  • My iMac will not boot past the logo and spinning gear

My iMac will not boot past the logo and spinning gear (After a Rogue Amoeba update). I can't access the recovery disk I made on a flash drive. (Am I doing it correctly? - Hold down option while switching on? It just stays on the logo). What (if anything) can I do please?

If you installed Lion onto your machine, it should have created a Recovery HD (hidden from view, but visible in Disk Utility with its Debug menu enabled, under Show all Partitions).
    That article states:
Note: In order to create an external Lion Recovery using the Lion Recovery Assistant, the Mac must have an existing Recovery HD.
Would I see the recovery menu (by holding down option on power up)
    Yes.
if there was no recovery disc connected do you think?
Shouldn't matter, since your int HD is always connected.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
