Have you tried a reset first? If it works, you won't have to go through the restore process.
Hold down the sleep (upper right hand top) and the home button at the same time. A slider will appear. Ignore it and keep holding down the buttons. The Apple logo shoud appear. Then your ipad might work again. It takes a good 15 seconds. You will not lose anything on your ipad.
If you try it a couple of times and it doesn't work, you might have to go through the restore process as has been suggested above. But follow the steps so you don't lose your data.

Try this.
Erase and Reinstall OS X
Note: This will delete all data on the disk. Back up important files before continuing.
Erasing and then reinstalling OS X can give you a fresh start, making your computer exactly as it was whenever you received it from Apple. This can solve various problems such as corrupt system files.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold both the R and Command (⌘) keys on the keyboard until the Recovery partition loads.

After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.

FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...
Note:
1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
3. Repeat the process if necessary.

Since your iPhone has hanged on you follow these steps
Hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button until it switches off, do not let go,
Keep holding until you see the Connect to iTunes symbol
Now you can let go and plug in your iPhone to your computer and restore from backup!

You should reset your iPhone,
Reset your iPhone by pressing the 'Sleep' and 'Home' button at the same time for about 15 seconds or so. Your iPhone will then go through a reset / reboot procedure and will be ready for use within about a minute.
Don't worry about doing this as you will not lose data or settings.

iTunes says its restoring my iPhone 3Gs then I get the message "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone is PIN locked. Please enter the PIN code of your SIM card and connect your iPhone to iTunes again". Problem is I can't-- the phone displays only the Apple logo again! Any ideas of what to do next? Not looking good! I have tried restarting computer and getting phone turned off and in recovery mode. Still same problem.

i Just updated Itunes, and was going to put in some music when the ipod check or something popped up and closed itunes, and disconnected my ipod from the computer. I took a look at my pod, and all i could see was the apple logo refreshing and unrefreshing. I tried the toggle hold + menu and select. Nothing
I tried to restore the pod, but nothing as well, mainly because the ipod does show on the computer.

If you registered your iPod, they should be able to pull it up by the serial number. If you have the receipt, you can take that with you as well. iPods do come with a 1 year warranty, so you're still covered. There may be some type of replacement fee you have to pay since yours is just over 6 months old. If there isn't an Apple store near you, call the support number and I'm sure they can help you out.

Can you tell us a little more abouth what you mean by "not starting?" Is there no response from the power button at all, or do you get a grey screen, a spinning cursor, a flashing question mark, an error message of some sort?

- Try on another computer
