If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod has your purchased content from the iTunes Store, you can transfer the content to a computer that is authorized for your Apple ID.
Note: This option only works for content you purchased from the iTunes Store (as opposed to content from other sources, such as CDs you may have imported). For content you did not purchase from the iTunes Store, synchronization occurs in one direction only. This means your content can be copied from a computer to your iOS device, but cannot be copied from your device to a computer.
Open iTunes.
From the Store menu, choose Authorize This Computer.
Enter your Apple ID and password. Then, click the Authorize button.
Connect your device your computer. If it is synced with another iTunes library, you may be asked if you want to "Erase and Sync" or "Transfer Purchases."
If that alert appears, click Transfer Purchases.
Important: Clicking Erase and Sync will delete any existing content currently on your device. The content would then be replaced with the content that is on the computer.
If you were not offered the option to transfer purchases:
After connecting your device to the computer, its icon appears in iTunes. Click the icon.
From the File > Devices menu, choose "Transfer Purchases from 'Your device name.'"
Note that the computer must be authorized for the Apple ID under which the purchases were made.

going to "transfer purchases' does work - however the thermometer bar at the bottom reflecting apps, music, video, book, etc cpapcity fraks out, sliding left to right maybe 4 or 5 times during the process. Have you ever seen this?
After it is finished, the SYNC button is not longer darkened - so I thought it was safe to attampt an upgrade to OS05... which i am doing now... takes maybe 20 mins and then I normally get the error "the applications on this ipad cannot be verified" and the bottom thermometer bar zeros out all by my music. The content and apps are all fine on teh ipad. so strange. I made an appointment with customer service tomrrow AM - but i do not think i should have to pay for this - i have never even used support before!
I will update if it works - or re[eats the strange pattern again and does not update.

You can't change the Apple ID that the Authorize dialog comes up with by default. It's showing you that Apple ID for a reason: it means that the items you want to play were purchased using that Apple ID and therefore you need to authorize your computer with that Apple ID. Changing the Apple ID given completely defeats the entire purpose.
If you don't know the password to the given Apple ID, then you will no longer be able to play those items.

IPhone 3G will not sync after recent update to software

I began a sync for my phone and new software was available and I allowed the update. Now my iPhone 3GS will not sync. continues to give an Unknown Error -39. What do I do?

Thank you for the response, I have not tried a restore, won't that wipe out everything on the phone? Leaving on vacation and don't have time to start over, I'll have to try this after I get back if the next response does not solve the problem.

Help! I downloaded ios 5. Now during the install on my first gen ipad 3g64, it will not get past the updating firmware. Gives error. Have tried at least a dozen times.

Right after I updated my iTunes on my PC, it will no longer sync anything. My apps, my music, everything won't sync.
It just says that I can't sync because I need more space (8.30GB to be exact). But before I updated my iTunes, everything was fine. The thing is I want my iTunes and iPod to synchronize with each other without losing anything.
Can someone help me?

IPad will not restore after iOS7 update

I just updated my iPad to ios7, did restart and restore and now I cannot get past the welcome screen. It keeps asking me to restore from backup, which I have done repeatedly. My computer shows my iPad as having everything restored, but the iPad does not. HELP!!!!!

Nautilus will not Start after system update

I just updated my system with "pacman -Syu" and it now will not open the nautilus file manager. Looking inside the journal it shows the following error:

M4b files will not sync after recent update

I recently updated the software on my ipod touch 4th gen. After updating, I tried to sync my playlists, but not all of the files would sync. After some investigation, I figured out that the files that wouldn't sync were audio books in m4b format. They synced just fine before the update. What is the problem here?

IPad does not sync after iTunes update

Hi there,
About a week ago, I updated my iTunes to 10.2.1. For some reason, I can't see the iPad in iTunes any longer when trying to sync. My iPod touch, however, shows up and syncs without problems. I've removed the iTunes (and Quicktime etc.) completely from the computer and reinstalled the software. No change. Tried McAfee's firewall settings, but still no change. I am desperate and running out of ideas now.
Can anyone help, please?

I also had this problem where I was forced to restore the iPad and iTunes would not see the device after preparing the restore and update.
Per the instructions on this thread and within http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925 I did the following:
1. From Windows XP task manager I stopped iPodService.exe from the Processes tab.
2. I deleted the iTunes folder from c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\Apple
Now the restore and sync has been going through just fine.
This is annoying however, as this is the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened after performing an iTunes update. Luckily I backup and sync about once a week.

I just updated my iTouch 4th generation to the newest software (4.2.2 or something, I didn't pay much attention) and now when I try to sync it, it says a file is missing. I tried deleting the iPod photo cache folders (there were two) like someone said on here and it didn't work so now I only have acess to photos saved from Safari. When I try to acess the ones I synced before it just shows big black boxes. Help!

Was this the error message:
"The iPhone/iPod touch "device name" cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found."
If it really said a file is missing I would try reinstalling iTunes.

Ipod touch 4th generation will not sync after I updated the new itunes. Actually after I updated to the new itunes it deleted all my music from my ipod and refuses to reload. If someone could please help me that would be completely appreciated. I tried trying to sync each song individually but it didn't help (before it stopped syncing), then it stopped syncing, even though I have it hooked up it brings everything that I have on my ipod up but it won't do anything.

When I tried the first time it asked me if i wanted it to stop syncing and to restore. It gave the choices of yes and cancel, i didn't click either because the option box went away and it just stopped restoring on its own. I did the store again and now it is asking if i want to set up as a new ipod or to restore to Andrea's ipod. Should I set up as new?

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.

Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
