  • HT4623 My ipad keeps crashing & now it won't come back on, just comes up to connect to itunes. Did that and tried a restore but just keeps comin up an unknown error, help please, I have so much on my ipad.

My ipad keeps crashing and this time it won't come back on it just keeps telling me to connect to itunes which I did and it just keeps telling me it can't restore this ipad because an error has occured! Really need help please?

If it keeps coming up with an unknown error - no error code given - try another computer. If that doesn't work, it's time to take it to an Apple Store or an authorized service center to have the device evaluated.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • My iPad is disabled and won't connect to iTunes on any computer; I went to my iCloud and removed the iPad so it will erase all data when the iPad is connected to the internet (the original problem was a restrictions passcode we forgot)

Here is the order of what I did to my iPad:
    1.  A restrictions passcode was put on and we couldn't remember it.  Despite numerous attempts at righting this, I couldn't. The iPad would not sync with any iTunes on any computer, Mac or PC.
    2.  I put a, 'use passcode after one minute' passcode on it and deliberately put in 10 wrong passcodes so it would disable the iPad.  Now it still will not connect to any iTunes.
    3.  I connected to my iCloud account and removed the iPad from the cloud; it says it will erase all iPad data when it connects to the internet.  I am fine with that, I need to know what to do now, though. iPad says, 'Connect to iTunes,' but it won't.  Please help this amateur of all amateurs!!

  • Since updating to iOS 6 on my ipad i am unable to connect to the internet, itunes or the app store. I have tried many suggestions about changing the dat, logging in/out of itunes etc but nothing has worked! Please help :)

Since updating my ipad to iOS 6 a few days ago i can't seem to get onto the internet, the app store or itunes, nor can i update to iOS7!! I sent an email to apple support and they said we don't handle these issues and redirected me back to the help forums which i have already seen and tried everything other people have suggested and nothing has worked (changing date, signing in/out of itunes etc). When i go to app store the screen is blank, in itunes it just keeps saying loading but never gets anywhere and same with the internet! When i go to settings to update to iOS 7.0.4 it says software update unavailable, try again later. Not sure what to do now. Nothing works, can't use my apps, facebook, music etc. Will contact apple again and try get some answers. But thanks for any info

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • My ipad 2 won't connect to my PC or iTunes

Please help, I can't connect my iPad to my PC and I have a lot of music I want to buy. I updated the iPad in December when the new IOS came out and our iTune is also up to date, I don't know why but when we plug it into the computer it won't charge or anything. We tried a different iPad to the computer and it connected fine

What iPad117 is describing is recovery mode. this will need a restore in itunes to be able to use the device again, clearing all data. If you want to avoid this, try this first: Try a different usb port. A lot of ports are not compatable with some iPads. One in the back of the computer is usually best. Also try a different cable, and make sure itunes is up to date.

  • HT1414 I've done all the steps to update my ipad. but it tells me to connect to itunes which it is, but it won't do anything.

Please help!  I've updated my ipad and it tells me to connect to itunes to complete set up. I am connected to itunes.  I don't know what to do! it won't do anything! I've restarted my device several times and it does the same thing.  It will say "connected to itunes" for about 2-3 minutes, then it just changes to "connect to itunes" but the device is still connected!

  • IPad Stuck in "Please Connect to iTunes" Mode, but is Fully Booted.

So today was like any day, just downloading some apps, and like I often do I decided to restart my ipad before trying out a particularly large app I just got (Epic Citidel). So shut down is normal. I restart it, Apple logo, good, 30 second boot time, good, "Connect to iTunes" message, wait, what? My iPad is displaying the little iTunes icon and a 30-pin dock connector being attached to it, just like when I first got my iPad out of the box. But here's the odd part: iOS is fully Booted. How can I tell? I have a pair of headphones with one of those push-to-talk buttons, which also happened to pause and play music on my iPad. And upon pressing this button in my iPad's current state it does indeed proceed to play and pause music, as if everything were perfectly normal. So this must mean that iOS is fully booted and that there must not be anything majorly wrong hardware wise. I can't make it do much else though. Home button, double home, etc, nothing. The only other UI element that functions is the Shutdown Slider, which acts like normal. I have shutdown and restarted, cold booted, done just about everything, and it won't change.
So, I should just connect the iPad to my MacBook, do what ever it says, and get over it, right?
No, because iTunes says "Please Enter the passcode on your iPad before Syncing may take place" (or something to that effect). But the problem is that the passcode keypad only appeared once, on the very first "limbo" boot, and hasn't since. So I can't very well restore or do anyhting if iTunes won't connect.
Since I know you'll ask: No, I have never jail-broken or used any 3rd party anything on this iPad, it is "clean". It had OS 3.1.2? I don't know, the one right before the most recent (before the PDF fix). It's a 64GB 3G+Wifi Model, only like two months old. I've never had a significant problem with it before.

Hello triflyer. I'm afraid I have lukewarm news. I was finally forced to bring it to the Apple Store (since it wouldn't even recover) and they basically said it's a hardware issue and there was nothing they could reasonably do for it. However, if your iPad is still under warranty (and I don't think any are old enough yet to not be) they'll most probably replace it for free right there at the store. (or at least that's what they did for me) Very painless and quick, just describe the problem to them and let them fiddle with it for a bit.
I only resorted to the Apple Store because it would not restore in Recovery Mode. But if you haven't tried Recovery Mode yet I suggest you do, because that might fix it. Follow these directions:
    http://forums.ilounge.com/iphone/232387-instruction-how-force-restore.html
(Warning, this will delete all the data on your iPad that hasn't been synced!)
If you get error 1013 after it's almost done then make a Genius Bar appointment, because that's the same one I got.
I'm sitting here now with my new iPad restoring all of my data and media. It all worked out well in the end, hope yours does too!
