My iPad2 won't stay in the horizontal view position

My iPad2 won't stay in the horizontal view position. I have it unlocked so I believe it should switch between views as I move it.  Before I make a trip to the Apple store I want to make sure it's not user error!

Unlocked allows the screen to rotate as you rotate the device. Locked is supposed to keep the screen fixed in one orientation. However the function of the switch on the side can be swapped between orientation lock and mute, so it might not be perfoming the job you expect it to. Check Settings > General > Side Switch.

            <h2>Riding the Cable Cars</h2>
<p>No visit to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the  iconic cable cars that climb up the vertiginous hills of the city. Of the  twenty-three lines established between 1873 and 1890, three remain: two routes  from downtown near Union Square to <a href="http://www.fishermanswharf.org/">Fisherman's Wharf</a>, and a third route along  California Street.</p>
<p>The cable cars rely on cables running constantly beneath the  road&rsquo;s surface. The driver—or gripman—uses a lever to grip the cable to pull  the car and its passengers up the hill. The gripman requires not only great  strength, but also great skill. He needs to know where to release the cable to  coast over crossing cables and points. The conductor works in close cooperation  with the gripman, operating the brake at the rear of the car to prevent it from  running out of control on the downward slopes.</p>

<p>A single ride on a cable car costs $6. If you plan to travel  around the city, it&rsquo;s often cheaper to buy a <a href="http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfares/passports.htm">Muni Passport</a>, which gives you  unlimited rides on San Francisco&rsquo;s extensive public transport system, including  the cable cars (but not the <a href="http://www.bart.gov/">BART subway</a> system). Even a single-day passport  ($14) will save you money if you make a return trip, and stop off to visit  Chinatown one way.</p>
<p>There are often long lines at the cable car terminus,  particularly on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde routes. If you don&rsquo;t want to  wait, try walking a few stops along the route. The conductor usually leaves a  small number of places to pick up passengers on the way. The California Street  route is generally less crowded (but not as spectacular).</p>

  • CD won't stay in the drive...

When trying to rip CDs, they won't stay in the drive. I have tried several different CDs. Every once in a great while a CD will be accepted and show up on the desktop and in iTunes, but usually there is just a bunch of clunking around inside the computer and then the cd is ejected. DVDs work fine. I have tried using a lens cleaner, but that didn't help. I fear I will need to have the drive repaired, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a preferences file I need to trash or something before I took the computer in.

When that happened to me, I had to replace the CD drive. However, my iBook would not read any CD that I tried. I didn't find other remedies. Tried the lens cleaner, too. That was pretty much a waste of time and money.
    Good luck.

  • Mail Icon won't stay in the position in the dock where I put it

I have a very strange happening on my iMac (OSX 10.5.5). The mail icon in my dock won't stay in the position where I put it. After a few seconds, it moves to the last position in the dock (before the dashed line). If my dock is at the bottom of screen, the mail icon moves to right just before the dashed line. If my dock is on the right side of screen, the mail icon moves to the bottom just before the dashed line. Each time I move the mail icon to another position in the dock, it moves back to the last position. Can anyone help me figure this out - so that I can put the mail icon where I want it to appear? Thank you. Dale

first a question for you. are you using Mobileme? I've seen a number of posts with the same problem by people using Mobileme (which i don't have). haven't seen a resolution to this but you might want to check in the mobileme forum. If you are not using mobileme try resetting Dock preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and restart Dock by running the following terminal command
    killall Dock
This will reset your Dock to the default and hopefully fix the issue.

  • I have created a second user on my imac (OSX 10.7.1) and applications won't stay in the dock and my preferences default after restart. Anyone else have this problem?

I have created a second user on my iMac (OSX 10.7.1) and applications won't stay in the dock and my preferences default after restart. Everything works fine with the main user. Anyone else have this problem?

    Hi again, ;o)
I found this advice in another thread (here), which you might find helpful...
Unregistering the iMac from .Mac syncing and re-registering it (replacing the computer's information with the .Mac information) resolved the issue.
The .Mac sync information was Reset (i.e. recopied in it's entirety) from the MacBook (the 'good' computer) to .Mac prior to unregistering and re-registering the iMac, so a fresh copy of the sync could be loaded from .Mac to the iMac.
I hope this helps the others who have had this problem.

Just in case you are not running iOS 7 and don't have the control center feature.....
If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that doesn't do it and you are running iOS 5 or 6, double tap the home button and swipe to the right and look for the lock icon all the way to the left.
If you are running iOS 7, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the control center and the lock icon is in the row of icons at the top all the way to the right.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the button

  • HT4623 My iphone 5 seems to be stuck in the horizontal view when I'm in the message mode.  In all other views I can turn the phone 90 degrees and horizontal to vertical works fine.  Not sure what the problem is.

    I found a solution!
Perhaps this is just temporary, but I have my display up and working again.
Although the symptoms are different were a bit different, the solution here worked:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120259/grey-screen-after-login-blue-scr een-of-death-from-cmdr
As I was able to connect to my HD via an external monitor, in the finder, I went to:
    1. Macintosh HD --> System --> Library --> Extensions
    2. From there I moved all of the files that started with ADM and ATI (19 in total for me) to a folder on my desktop. (You will need to enter your admin password for this)
    3. Next was a restart.
    4. Then my display started working again.
    5. After that, I transferred the files back into my Extensions folder.
    6. I then did another restart with my fingers crossed and breath held. It worked.
Also... During the last few days of trying to find a fix, I restored a Mavericks backup to my computer away from Yosemite.
I'm very sure this problem occurred when I put my MBP to sleep, disconnected the power in its sleep, while something was connected to a USB port and unplugging the USB device (for me an iPhone charger) while the MBP was closed.
I hope this helps the next person.

  • Won't print all the horizontal grid lines

The printer won't print all my horizontal lines on a spreadsheet.

Do a print preview, and if the lines are missing in the preview, then it's the sreadsheet app, or setting in the spreadsheet. If the preview has the lines but not on the printout, it could be the printhead had a nozzle or two clogged, try "clean printhead" in the tools menu.

  • Firefox won't stay in the toolbar of my mac mini

i have the most recent app of firefox in my applications folder and am running system 10.5.8 but when I drag it from the applications folder on my hard drive to the bottom toolbar it won't stay.

Maybe a permission problem?  Use Disk Utility to repair permissions, see if that helps.

  • Podcasts won't stay in the order I choose

This is related to another thread I saw on here. But my issue is a little different so I started another one.
I have a 2nd generation shuffle and updated versions of iTunes and Mac OS X (well almost... 10.4.9). I have reset the iPod several times and the problem persists.
    THE PROBLEM:
I drag over a bunch of Podcasts. They load on the iPod shuffle. Then I reorder them on the shuffle. After disconnecting and reconnecting the shuffle, the original order is restored.
I even tried reordering the Podcasts then playing one all the way through to make sure the one I wanted to play started right after. It did. But then after disconnecting and reconnecting, the original order was back again.
Something is wrong here. Very wrong. This even happens on my old G5 computer with a 10.3 OS).
Any help? Anyone else got the problem?

I have the problem too...but slightly different. The order that I placed the podcasts in disappears immediately upon my removal of the iPod from its dock. I'll plug in and listen, and the podcasts are shuffled up, even though my iPod is NOT set to shuffle songs. This means the podcasts were NEVER ordered the way I put them on my iPod. I've tried work-arounds, such as creating a playlist with my podcasts in order, and dragging THAT to my iPod. No luck. I don't understand how iTunes re-orders my podcasts; I see no rhyme or reason to it. They're just randomly shuffled back up when I listen to my iPod. This is partiularly annoying with podcast series, dated podcasts (best listened to oldest to newest), and podcasted audiobooks.
Note that this problem does not happen with music. Music always stays in the order I place it.
I'll join my friend in saying: Any help? Anybody got this figured out?

  • IChat won't stay on the dock

Every time I put iChat on my dock, it disappears within a minute!
    What's wrong?
    Thanks,
    Ken

    Nope, that's not it.
I put the icon in the dock. A few seconds later it disappears. Poof. Now you have it now you don't.
There is nothing different from this icon and the others.
On my other 2 Macs, the icon stays in the dock. So, something must be corrupt somewhere, though I've just re-installed Leopard and the problem didn't go away.
