My iPhone 3G is no longer being "found" by iTunes - please help

I am an advanced user, so this makes it even more baffling.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) and I have the iPhone 3G (OS 4.1)running with iTunes 10.0.1 (x64). I have also now updated to the latest iTunes 10.1 but I am still having the same problem.
The issue bellow suddenly started about a week: For some reason, when I plug-in my iPhone, it is no longer recognized by iTunes. I have "removed" and "re-installed" iTunes (re-downloaded too) but to no avail.
I have tried plugging in my wife's iPod Touch into the same exact machine (my computer) and the same USB cable was used and her iPod Touch was found with no problems. I then go and plug in my iPhone (using the same USB cable) into her old Windows XP laptop and it is found without any problems. I have tried using her cable on my machine, but same problem persists. When I plug-in my iPhone, iTunes just locks-up. As soon as I remove the phone, iTunes unlocks itself.
One other thing that might be of help to someone to diagnose my problem: When I plug in my iPhone, I get the USB "found sound" via Windows 7 and then it is repeated about 10 seconds later.
Also I have noticed is that my iPhone is found by Windows 7 without any problems because I am able to see it and access it (the photos) via Windows Explorer. Also, as soon as my iPhone is plugged in, it recharges just fine.
What could be wrong? I only need to access iTunes so I can sync/backup/update the phone.
Please help with any and all suggestions.

Yesterday evening, I was finally in contact with Apple, and to make the long story short, they seem to have "fixed" the problem. It's complicated to write it all here, but I will try. The problem was that the somehow my updated Apple Device USB driver was not correctly installed!
So try this:
REMOVE exactly as it tells you here (in that particular order):
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923?viewlocale=en_US
Reboot and then make sure all is gone as the way it tells you on the previous link I wrote above.
Create a new Windows 7 USER ACCOUNT with Administrative power. Call it anything you want, but for now, I will call it MIKE
Reboot machine.
Login as the newly created user account (MIKE).
Re-install the X64 iTunes version. You don't need to reboot or start up iTunes.
PLUG IN the iPhone.
Then go to Control Panel / System / Device manager. Look under Porttable devices and you should find Apply iPhone. Click on the driver version. It should say 6.1.7600.16385 (Date 6/21/2006). Close that top window. Now con to the Universal Serial Bus controllers under System. When you open that, you should see the first one listed as: Apple Mobile Device USB driver. Select it. Then go to driver. If it does not say that it is: 6.0.9999.52 (dated 9/16/2010), you have the same issue that I had.
You must then select UPDATE driver / Browse my computer and then you need to point to a directory called:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
or it may be inside:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
What you will need to have is the file called: usbaapl64.sys
That is the file that was never used by my computer, and therefore, caused this non-finding of iPhone in iTunes.
I won't go into the full details, but it seems that somehow during one of the iTunes installations or updates, the file did not get placed in the right directory and somehow some bad data got written into the registry and therefore it never was installed during the future iTunes installations / updates. Although it seems like Apple guys helped me with my problem, I still have not heard a logical explanation of why it happened in the first place. My computer is 4 weeks old and was built and clean-installed from scratch. Everything worked for 3 days and then suddenly it just stopped.
After you are done with this, try starting iTunes with your phone plugged in (doesn't matter if you plug it in later). Hopefully you will see your iPhone!
If all is okay, exit iTunes and LOGOFF the the user (MIKE) that you just created.
Switch back to your real user. Then go and DELETE completely (all files, settings options on) the temporary user (MIKE) you created.
Restart the computer and hopefully, when you start-up your iTunes and plug in your iPhone, you will again see your iPhone.
I hope this helps you! Please let me know.

  • Ipod shuffle no longer recognised on my iTunes - please help

my ipod shuffle is no longer being recognised on my itunes. the ipod device is working fine. a few days ago when i went to change some songs on my playlist it said i needed to update my software which i did, only i did have some problems and it said it had to start my ipod shuffle up again and then it said it no longer recongised the device and that an error had occurred and now i plug it into my machine. the green light comes on so it knows it is there but itunes doesn't pick this up and i cannot access my ipod shuffle through it anymore. don;t suppose there is anyone out there who has had something similar happen and can offer me some advice on why this has happened and what i need to do next

I had the same problem and read here and some other places hours of solutions that part of the worked and part didn't.
Eventually I tried something simple and it worked for me:
1- Go to the WI-FI icon (up at the menu bar, at the top of the screen) (-I am assuming that you don't know where it is, if you do, just go to 2- there is a triangle with bars and rounded edge. This is the WIFI icon).
2- Click on it and then disable the WIFI connection (click on "Turn WI-FI off").
3- Wait some seconds and turn it on again.
4- My iPod appears in the iTunes side bar now.
That's all I do and, as I said, it works for me.
Hope it will work for you too.

  • I need to backup all of the music on my iPhone however I no longer have a computer. Please help!

Hey, this is my first post on Apple Support Communities because I'm usually able to solve any iPhone problem by doing extensive googling... However this time it seems that I've hit a roadblock. To get a decent idea of my situation, here's some basic info and a breakdown of what's been going on:
    -I have an iPhone 4S
-Approximately 1 month ago I tried downloading a Gmail app and it got stuck on "Waiting" mode.
-When this first happened I tried to exit out of it during wiggle mode but there was no "X", so I just left it alone.
-Recently I've been noticing my battery has been draining terribly since the app got stuck on waiting, so I've made it a point to try just about every possible solution I could find online (hard reset of the phone, signing in and out of the apple store, checking purchases, resetting all settings, etc.)
-None of these proposed solutions worked, so I made an appointment with the Apple Store. I brought it in yesterday hoping they would be able to do a quick fix, only to find out they could not fix it, and that the only way to get rid of the waiting app battery drain issue would be to completely wipe the phone.
-The main problem I'm having here, however, is that I used to have a computer but it died a little while ago... so I've just been using the iPhone without syncing it to a computer (all of the music I got from CD's is still on my iPhone and I don't want to lose it).
-Since I can't back up my phone with a computer, I backed it up to iCloud last night for the first time. This took about 2 hours, and supposedly was successful, however I then remembered iCloud does not backup the music on your device that came from CD's. The Apple Store employee had told me I could use iTunes Match if I needed to backup all of my music and I no longer had a computer... However I looked into it only to find that you DO need a computer for iTunes Match.
So my question is, how can I backup all of my music without a computer? Is there an app that has been known to do this well? I just want to be able to backup all of my songs right on my iPhone, wipe the phone, and then be able to restore all the music back onto the phone somehow.
Any help or insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

  • When trying to delete photos from my Iphone 5s, I no longer have a trash button, please help.

I have tried "Select" and even then the only function I have is "add to". Is there a new way to delete photos that I just do not know about?

You don't get a trash can icon in the bottom right portion of your phone after pressing Select and then choosing a picture?
If not, try resetting your phone and then attempt to delete a picture.
Hold the home button + the lock button for about 10-12 seconds until the Apple logo appears.  You will not lose any data or current settings.

  • Iphone 3GS 32Gb recognised by PC not by Itunes - please help...

I am at a loss. Iphone has been updated to latest firmware. It is recognised on osme computers, but crucially not on my laptop which is where my library is... Other ipod devices will sync quite happily but not the iphone.
Windows recognises the device and charges it quite happily, but ITunes refuses to see that there is an iphone connected. If anyone can give me some pointers (I am technically literate - but lost on this one) I would be very grateful indeed.
    Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit
    Lenove PC.
    Latest iTunes and iOS
everything has been rebooted ad nauseum.
    Thanks

I have been having similar issues lately...Intermittently. I posted a separate post earlier today. I could see the mapped drive of the phones camera in windows just fine, navigate it, copy pics down, etc...But iTunes would not see it/lock up like it was trying to talk to it...Sometimes I would get an error...If I just unplugged it, it would free up iTunes...Anyway, I had tried several things, but ultimately, I think I have resolved the issue....Are you using the exact same cable to sync the other devices?...I think my main problem was a non-Apple USB cable(that came with a non-Apple car charger)...Try a different cable anyway...I brought my Apple cable that came with the phone with me to work today(I just use it to charge at night), and have not gotten it to fail once. I must have plugged-unplugged 24 times today just to see if i could make it fail. I could get it to fail on the Non-Apple cable I would say...at least 2-3 out of 10 tries...The non-Apple cable has been working fine since I got the non-Apple car charger when I bought the phone back in July....but I guess you get what you pay for...It still will charge it though...so I'll use the non-Apple cable at home for charging, and keep the Apple cable with me...Should get another wall charger with a new cable anyway though...Oh well...Hope this helps...Post back with results. my ipod touch 2g is no longer being recognized by itunes why and what can i do i have reset it and everything

If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

How to solve this problem that I have

i've had a few issues like this.
I've found that it is an issue with items that are already on your phone.
    several troubleshoots.
    1) uncheck everything from syncing (apps, music, tv shows, movies, podcasts, etc), try to perform a sync, it most likely will work.  Then, sync after checking each item individually (check the sync box for videos, then sync, check the sync box for podcasts, then sync, check the sync box for music, then sync, etc).  One of two things will happen, 1) you will fix the problem, or 2) you will identify exactly what part of the sync setup is the culprit.
    2) if the above doesn't work, I've found that it is likely an issue with files that are on your phone but your phone doesn't exaclty recognize (for example, I had copies of music on my phone that didn't show up in the music app, I went in on itunes and manually deleted those songs from my phone and that fixed the sync).  to do this, check the "manually manage music and videos" box at the bottom of "summary" while your phone is connected to itunes.  Then, go to the left hand pane in itunes and find your iphone device, click the drop-down arrow that shows all the categories for media on your iphone.  Go to the music category in your iphone on itunes and delete all the music that shows up.  Try to perform a sync - it likely will work.  After this, you can uncheck the manually manage music box and re-sync your phone as normal
let me know if either works

EUREKA, I found the solution to my problem in a Discussion initiated by gingertodd on July 27, 2011 entitled "Safari in Lion hijacked by malware."  The solution was provided by Badunit who recommended force quitting Safari and then reopening it while holding down the Shift key.  It worked instantly, and I subsequently was able to open Safari normally by just clicking on its icon in the Dock.   THANK YOU BADUNIT!
