I was playing games on my 3gs the other day and then it shut off randomly and the screen slowly faded away the battery was at about 70%
now it will just turn off randomly without warning unless plug into a power source and wont turn on after shutting off unless plugged in
I have tried restoring it, putting it in a dehumidifier and also charging overnight
I have tried to drain the battery but it wont work because it will shut down whilst i am draining the battery
One time today i turned it off and left it for a few hours, the battery was 89% but when i turned it back on a few hours late it showed the plug into power sign
It charged to about 33% and then a few mins later it went up to 100%
Could this be a battey percentage sensor problem?
It anyone has an idea of what might be going on please tell me, it would be greatly apreciated
Also: i am on ios 5.1.1 and NOT jailbroken

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

I would instead say you have a problem since nearly all IPs work as advertised. IF you do have a bad phone, take it into an Apple store and get a replacement. Hope you didn't jailbreak your phone though as Apple probably will tell you, you broke it, you fix it.

Try charging the iPhone via a wall socket for at least 30 minutes then try a reset by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 20 seconds (maybe longer) until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider. Then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing the reset.

Take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them fix it.
I had a similar issue when I was syncing a friend's iPhone (I don't own one) in that the machine shut down when the iPhone was plugged in. But I was able to reboot. A lot of people seems to have the problem that you describe, however.

It really depends on the circumstances. If you haven't powered your phone off yourself for quite some time, sometimes kinks can just happen and this sounds like one of them. Every so often on mine I will have to use this method but it is in the very minority of occasions.

Plug your device into the original charger & block in a wall outlet and leave it alone for a couple of hours. Then, while it is still plugged in, restart it by holding down the home button and the power button for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple, then let go.

I have downloaded every update and my battery life is better than any previous iPhone I have ever owned. I see posts from hundreds of people every day, and this is not a commonly reported problem. What happened to the phone. Did it just go black? Did you try to plug it into Itunes and see if it can be seen or throw it on the charger. You can still try the reset procedure listed in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430 and see if the phone turns back on.
The only way to get things back is to have backed them up ahead of time.

I am having the same problem with my ipad air but mine is so severe that it's just rebooting non stop. I guess the battery will die eventually but it has rendered the device useless. I guess I will be taking it back to apple. Very disappointed. Never had an apple product in 20yrs have such a severe problem.

ok so my iPhone 4s shut down out of no where about 38 minutes ago. I had just gotten off the phone and gotten into my car when I saw the black screen. I thought it just locked like it normally did, so I clicked the power button but nothing happened. then I held the power button longer, thinking it must be dead, but again nothing happened. So, I put it in the charger and again, nothing showed up. I had recently updated to the new IOS8 earlier this morning and found nothing wrong. everything was working perfectly fine until now. Place iPhone on Wall Charger for at least 10 minutes. Then keep on charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start, this can take about 20 seconds of holding both buttons while on charger. If still problem, open iTunes 10.7 on computer, connect iPhone to computer with USB Cable, hold both home and power buttons for about 20 seconds until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, then click Restore button of iTunes. If still problem, try DFU Mode Restore, here are the steps. Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power buttons, after exactly 10 seconds release the Power Button, keep holding the Home button until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds time. If the iPhone screen is black, blank this is DFU Mode. Click the Restore button of iTunes. DFU Mode can be difficult to enter sometimes, just keep trying. DFU Mode is a black, blank screen with iTunes saying Recovery Mode. If still problem and there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.
