i have switch my iphone 3gs on and the screen is very enlarged and can not use slider bar and go any further on the phone, i have taken sim out and re inserted it and no change, can you help please

If you mean that the iphone froze in some random app you have ....the solution is easy .
Press and hold both Home Button and On/OFF button for about 15 seconds . The device should turn off and on again .
If not than please wait until the battery goes out and try the above step again whilst device is off .

Send it back, as you won't be able to activate a Sprint iPhone in India, nor will you be able to get the sim slot unlocked since you're not a Sprint customer. Your parents bought the wrong iPhone.

Then the power off option will pop up. I have tried letting it die and recharging it and powering it off neither worked. Does any one have an idea on what this could be or what I can do?

If the Slide to Power Off option is coming up, that suggests your power button isn't working correctly and is sticking.
Best thing to do is bring the phone to an Apple store (make an appointment first) and have a Genius take a look at it.

That's the screen zoom function activated by CNTL scroll up to zoom and CNTL-Scroll down to unzoom.

O2 locked the iPhone as they subsidised the original price
when sold new
Therefore ONLY O2 can unlock the iPhone
it is NOTHING to do with Apple they have no authority

No it is not. iPhones, like all cell phones are not locked to countries. They are locked to carriers.

You can't downgrade the iOS level.
Try using Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

my iphone will not get out of a locked function. The phone at the bottom where you usually slide to unlock in changing in Japanese, and other symbols. Try forcing a reboot on your iPhone. Hold down the Home button and Sleep button simultaneously for about ten seconds. Ignore anything the phone does and do not release until the screen goes dark and you see the Apple symbol. If your iPhone still wants to connect to iTunes, do so and see what happens. If there is still a problem, click Restore on your iPhone's summary page in iTunes. First restore from backup to try and preserve your content, but if this fails, you may have to restore your iPhone as new and manually set it up again. Good luck!
