My iPhone 3GS just stopped working this morning. It tells me activation is required and that I need to plug it into itunes. When I try to plug it into itunes it doesn't register that I have anything plugged in.

However when I try to plug it into my computer nothing happens, it will only show the apple symbol when I plug it into an outlet. Does anyone know what I can do to get it to plug into itunes or activate it again?
Please plug the iPhone with the original doch-connector & USB cable into a USB plug in the computer (directly into the computer) and restart iTunes. It should register. Please do not stop the registration!!! You may need to press power on iPhone.

Downloaded older version and newer version of what. Any attempts to downgrade iOS are not allowed. Also, using iTunes with the latest iOS and iTunes requires the latest version.
I suggest that you remove and reinstall iTunes using this support document. You need to follow the steps exactly or you will just create more problems, which I think you already have. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 -

My iPhone has suddenly stopped working. It now says the battery is dying and to charge it. After charging it for over an hour, there is no change. The power won't come on, and I am left with a blank screen advising me to plug my phone into the charger.
Try different USB Cable, try different Charger. Clean iPhone charging port with clean dry toothbrush. If still problem and you have Warranty or AppleCare, make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, most likely it could be battery or charging port assembly that need replacement.

Yep! You could also try to restart the device by holding the power button and the home button down for several seconds might get 'er kicked into gear. Other than that... The Applestore it is!
