My iPhone 3gs turns off randomly  (applecare sent it back as it was!)

Hi, had my iPhone 3Gs 32GB Black since about August 2009. From the outset it has turned off randomly ever few days or so, usually when I am in the middle of a call. I tried resetting the phone. Removing all the apps. etc. etc. but no luck.I stuck with it thinking that the problem would go away or that some future software update would fix the issue but also no luck.
So I took it into Movistar (the dealer for the phone here in Spain) a couple of weeks ago and they duly sent it off to Applecare for repair. Apparently you cannot do that yourself, it has to go through the store.
Anyway, got the phone back today with a really shoddy looking photocopy from AppleCare Service in Cork (Ireleand) saying that " their technicians could not find any problem with the phone..." blah blah blah. and that the problem should fixed by reset!
So what do I do now. I know that if they have not actually found the fault then the issue will persists. The Movistar sales woman said to just bring it back in that case and they would send it off to Apple again (for another two weeks...).
Is there any way I can contact Apple CAre direct about this? Anyone got any suggestions?
Cheers,
Tony

Thanks, but no Apple stores in Spain. Have to go through telco. Movistar. Will just send it back again for repair... see if they can fix it this time or give me a replacement.

  • IPhone 3GS turns off randomly.

I happen to have an almost 2 year old iPhone 3GS that I once bought brand new and it has this problem that when I fully charge it, it doesn't even drain down to 50% before it gets stuck, dims the display, slowly fades out with black stripes and all, turns off and never gets back on. Unless I put it on charge again, which takes about 2 hours to get turned back on again. I've also noted it turns off on special occasions like when I take photos or type someone a message.
And just to let you know, I've already restored it once. So, what do you all think could be the problem?

These features are most common due to faulty battery. Make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple Store for free quick battery diagnostic testing.

  • Iphone 3GS turns off randomly (cool weather?)

This is the second (or third) time that has happened, so I am beginning to think there is something wrong...
Lately, when I am out in the cold for a long time, and decide to use my phone, it turns off... I turn it on again, and try to run an app, and same thing happens. It doesn't matter which app, as it happens with any I tried...
Only thing that comes to my mind is the cooler temperatures as it is fine other times... But the weird part is that it is fine as long as it's on and I am not doing anything with it. Also, I have been in colder temperatures with no issues previously so I don't understand why it suddenly started to do this...
    Any ideas?

You could have a faulty wire somewhere in the phone.  Cold weather would cause the wires/connections to contract, which may disconnect something.  Also, moving/joseling the phone could have the same effect.
I'm not really sure though.  Just a guess.  If it is a loose wire, the only fix is to take it into an Apple Store and have them look at it.

  • IPhone 3gs turns off while having 60-80% battery

hello, iphone 3gs turns off while there is enough battery to be consumed. Round about 60 to 80 percent battery is more enough to keep alive an iphone for a whole day long. what suggestion you recommend, help asap......

You could try to disconnect and after a few minutes reconnect the battery. That theoretically resets the phone BIOS and is supposed to help regarding the reboot issue (see post by NIKKOH007) http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2471090&start=2055&tstart=30
Or replace the battery altogether with a newer, iOS 4 compatible battery. At iFixit.com they have come to the conclusion that not all batteries in the 3GS are necessarily iOS4.x compatible or a battery defect may be exposed after updating.

  • Iphone 4 turns off randomly and won't turn back on unless it's plugged in

Iphone 4 turns off randomly and won't turn back on unless it's plugged in.
    Has anyone had this problem?
If I leave the phone (thus not doing anything to it) for an extended period of time say 2 hrs. It will have turned off and you can't turn it back on unless you plug it in, but it's got heaps of "Battery" left.
Ever so often it will turn off randomly as well, and can't turn it on again.

If your iPhone is powering off, this is not normal.
Try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. If no change after doing so, your iPhone has a hardware problem. The iPhone includes a one year warranty.

my iphone 3gs turned off and on abruptly?

Try holding down the Sleep/Wake button and Home button at the same time,
Continue to hold both down until you see the Apple Logo on the screen. Once you see the Apple Logo on the screen let go of both buttons and allow the iPhone to reset.
    Hope this helps

  • My iPhone 3GS turned off suddenly

My iPhone 3GS turned off suddenly and when i switched it on it give me that there is no battery then when i charge it i fined that the battery between 60% to 30% i have tried to restore it but the same problem came out
i bought my iPhone 3GS since Apr 2010

This sounds like the same problem i'm having.  I have to upgrade my os to most current.  Really don't want to do a restore.  I've read another post from someone who's problem seemed the same as mine and it was actually the battery.  After having battery replaced, it worked fine.  Whatever the problem actually is, I hope it won't cost a lot to fix.

  • 3GS turns off randomly

My iphone has been turning off randomly while using apps and making calls for a while now. I have tried restoring it but does not fix the issue. The phone is 3 years old. I would get a 4GS but since the 5 is coming out later this year Id rather wait for that. But I really need a working phone right now.

  • Iphone 3gs turns off since 5.1.1

Hello since this ios 5.1.1 update my 3gs has basicly killed itself it turns off randomly even if its 80% or 100% personally i think apple should give me a free repair seeming as they're software (itunes) made me update to 5.1.1 and since then it turns off if anyone knows how to fix this then it would be appreciated
    thanks.

I have the same issue as well,  now it has become nothing more than a paper weight to listen to music.
Bloody phone needs to be constantly plugged in .
phone calls will last 3-5 mins unless it is plugged in, same for using wifi, data,  etc.
I shut down all the apps and still same problem,  often enough at 98% power, the phone will shut down, especially if using Safari/wifi, or data.
My phone is all original, I never believed in jail breaking or modifying any of my electronic equipment,  I have restored my phone at least 4 times,  what a waste of time.
I am lucky enough that my company supplies me a BlackBerry (that I dislike) but at lease I now forward all my calls to my Co. phone, but not everyone has that luxury.
I went to an Apple store, I did not get to see a technician (wayyyy too busy), but I saw a service rep.  when I explained the problem, they would hmmm and hawww,  and constantly say   Yeahh,   and finish with Y'know that 3Gs is quite old, you should be upgrading to the 4gs!  *** ????   is that your answer.  I said since I up graded to 5.1.1 I have developped these problems shortly after the up grade. you can't even down grade back to the earlier version before the upgrade.
Marcus, I think Apple is too big to think of us simple clients, and just don't care.  Right now I am really considering the new Samsung Galaxy SIII.
After seeing all the frustrated good folks that have this issue, and seeing how Apple is doing nothing about it really burns me

  • My iPhone 5s turns off randomly and won't turn back on

Yesterday my iphone just shut off randomly even after being charged at 100%. I gave it a hard reset three times and it finally turned back on. But today it blanked out again and every time I try to turn it on the apple icon pops up but then disappears. The screen goes black and nothing happens. I've tried the hard reset and that doesn't work, I've even tried holding down all four buttons and it still doesn't work.

  • My iPhone 4 turns off randomly not completely turn off

Pls help my iPhone 4 turns off randomly

Clean iPhone charging port with clean dry toothbrush. See if better. If not and there is warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution. If no Coverage, clean again with toothbrush and some Isopropyll Alcohol. See if better. If not you may need charging port assembly and/or battery replacement.

  • IPhone 4 turns off randomly and refused to turn on until 10 mins or so...

My iPhone 4 originally AT&T smart phone, is what I use on T-mobile as of right now. I have had it for just about two years now and I think it's coming to its last few days. It turns off randomly throughout the day and does not turn on right away when I push either other of the button (simultaneously or one at a time), until about 5-10+ minutes or so. It is very frustrating and I really do love apple products but I don't know, something is telling me to switch to android unless a miracle happens.
    Thanks in advanced.

  • IPhone 4 turns off randomly, and doesn't start up unless its on the charger. Hard resetting it when its turned off doesn't turn it on either.

My iPhone 4 is running iOS 4.3.4 and it suddenly turns off randomly, usually when the batery is around 85% or so. When I try to turn it on the normal way or hard resetting it, it doesn't turn on. It only turns on when its connected to a charger, and the time and date resets to 7.30am, January 1st 1970. I have no idea why is this happening and how do I resolve this issue? I really don't want to go get it replaced as its too much of a hassle and Im leaving to another country in 2 days time..

It also starts charging at 70% or so when it turns on..
