My iPhone 4 (iOS5) won't allow me to update apps

When I originally got my iphone 4, I originally synced my phone to a friends computer and got his apps. I later set up my own appleID and started downloading new apps again. However, now my iphone is getting confused about which apps are owned by who, and what my apple ID is. Whenever I try to update apps via my phone it says that i should reset my password via iForgot. I have done this numerous times and it still makes no difference. ( it should be noted that all the apps I got off a friends computer were deleted and I redownloaded them myself before any problems started to occur).
Interestingly on iTunes, I can log into my account and buy stuff perfectly normally. However, if i want to update apps, its says that there are 22 to update, but then i click the button and there are only two. I then tried logging in on my friends account, tried to update the apps again, and there they were. HOWEVER, these were apps that I had bought, not him. For example, when I originally synced my phone with his laptop, 'Where's my water?" was not even out, but now it won't let me update the app. I have tried logging in and out of the app store on my phone and that works fine, it is just when i try to update old apps that it wont accept my password.
This problem only seems to have occured since iOS 5 came out. Please if anyone has any ideas, or possible soutions, please let me know.
thanks.

Also, just as a note, I restored my iphone last night, and it has made no difference.
One last thing... On itunes, when i click 'info' on apps that are said to be under my friends account (ie they will only update when he is logged in), it says that i purchased them under my account, yet it won't let me update them.

Hey, as far as I know you need a sim card to activate after a restore
It however does not have to be a fully working sim card, just not blocked or with a pass code, I repair/refurb. some iPhones and can only advise to try and get a free sim card from a provider supported on your phone and activate it with this,  or maybe someone can lend you theirs for 5 mins?
To clarify, I have heard there are ways around this, but they sound dubious.

Restart your phone, hold the home and off button at the same time until the apple symbol comes up.

In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > store, scroll down and tap your ID)

  • Iphone 6 won't allow ios 8.0.2 update

I purchased a new iphone 6 and restored it from an icloud backup.  My previous phone, an iphone 5, had ios 8.0.2 installed on it but now my new iphone 6 won't allow me to download and install the update.  My home screen shows the badge app icon on settings stating that there is a pending download, but when i select software update, i am told that the update has already been downloaded but it can't be installed until i finish restoring from icloud backup.  I have no idea what that means because all other apps have been restored and i don't know what else i can do.  I am experiencing numerous bugs and errors and would like to download the update.

    Hi there 22zach22,
It sounds like your iPhone is still restoring some items from your previous iCloud backup. You can observe the progress of this in your iCloud settings, at the bottom of the page, where it shows your iCloud storage and last backup information:
    iCloud - iPhone
    http://help.apple.com/iphone/8/#/iph3c79652c
If you feel that this restore process has stalled, you may want to perform a reset on your phone using the following article:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
For best results, I recommend that you make sure you are connected to power and connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot when you perform the reset. Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Braden

  • What to do if itunes erases the songs on your iphone and won't allow you to resync them back?

what to do if itunes erases the songs on your iphone and won't allow you to resync them back?

Do you get any specific error messages?  Double-check the following:
On the summary tab of your iTunes sync settings you have checked "Sync only checked songs and videos"
In your music library you have checked all the songs you want to sync to your phone
There are no exclamation points next to any of the songs you want to sync to your phone
You have authorized your computer for all Apple IDs for any purchased music you want to sync to your phone (in Store>Authorize this computer)
You have checked "Sync Music" on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings
When everything looks correct, sync your phone.

  • How do I update from iOS 6.0.1 to iOS 7.1? As I've never updated my phone since buying from a friend and my phone won't allow me to update to iOS 8??

How do i update my iOS 6.0.1 to iOS 7.1? As I've never updated my phone since buying from a friend and my phone won't allow me to update to iOS 8??

An iPhone 4S can only be updated directly to iOS 8.1.2. You need to resolve the issue which prevents you from updating to it instead of attempting to install an intermediate version.

  • HT5642 An error won't allow me to update the software

An error won't allow me to update iOs 6.1

What iOS version are you currently running?
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • HT4972 My iPhone 4 does not allow me to update my phone there is no "software update" selection in general settings

My iPhone 4 does not allow me to update to ios5.  There is no "software updates" listed under settings and general where this is usually found?

You will need to connect the iPhone to the computer and iTunes and update in that fashion. Since the OTA update ability was introduced in iOS 5, if your device has an iOS of less than iOS 5, you will have to do it that way. After updating, you will be able to do subsequent updates OTA.
Connect to iTunes, select the phone in the device pane and select update. Also, you will not be able to update to iOS 5, you can only update to the latest iOS, which for the iPhone 4 is iOS 6.1.3.

  • My iPhone 5 won't let me use my apps until I connect them with iTunes after downloading ios7. Solutions?

My iPhone 5 won't let me use my apps until I connect them with iTunes after downloading ios7.  There's just a thing that pops up and says that in order to activate banners and push notifications I have to connect the app with iTunes. The thing won't go away no matter how many times I push ok, and it doesn't give me another option. Solutions?

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

There are a number of other threads from people reporting a problem with a blank Updates tab in the App Store app - it looks like there is a problem at Apple's end which they need to fix.
Some posts are suggesting that you if you go into the Purchased tab in the App Store app you might be able to update the apps from there, though you will need to scroll through the list to find those with updates and individually update them.

can i bring back my iphones ios5.0.1 when i already updated it to ios5.1?

No. You can not downgrade iOS.
Why do you want to? Let's try to solve whatever problem you're having instead.
If youre reason involves hacking or jailbreaking, you're out of luck.
