Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive (the drive itself, not the volume icons below it.) Is the SMART status "Verified?" If not, replace the drive immediately. If the status is "Verified," the drive may still be failing. Back up all data, if you haven't already done so. Reinstall Mac OS X, then run Software Update. Test with all wired peripherals disconnected. If it's still slow, you have a hardware problem.

  • My iphone 3gs is almost 2 years old and now wont work!

My iphone 3gs seems to be dying on its arse after use for 1 year 7 mths. Im not due for an upgrade till Feb and want to know if there is any easy fix for the problem. It hasnt been dropped or had any other king of damage to it. If i run an application, it will still shut down, even with an almost full battery and no other apps open. Only recently, it has now stopped picking up my network signal, despite checking the sim card is fine and turning the phone off and on again, does anyone have any ideas on how i can fix this?

Have you read the User Guide and taken the basic recommended troubleshooting steps?

  • My charger has stopped working, it is only a year old and has no frayed or exposed wires.

My charger is about a year old and has been working perfectly until today. It has no frayed parts or any wires exposed on it. i plugged it in and it wasn't charging and my battery icon on my monitor had an x on the inside of it and wouldn't charge. I tried again to charge it after it finally died and it didn't work, I used my mom's charger and it worked perfectly fine, so it isn't the batter that is having a problem. Has my charger just spontaneously stopped working or it is a common flaw that occours often with other users, and if so is there a soloution to fix it or get a discount on a new charger for what I am going to assume is a design flaw in the box on the charger because that is the only other thing I can think of that would be causing my charger any problems?

I had a lightbulb once. Brand new. Screwed it in its socket, lit it up. 20 minutes later it was dead. It's "brother" from the same twinpak is still shining bright almost 2 years later. Same thing here. The manufacturing process only guarantees that the mean time between failures is adequately long. But the individual units follow a probabilistic bell curve: sometimes you get one from one end and dies right off, most times you get one from the middle and lasts awhile, occasionally you get one from the other end and seems to last forever.
If you have AppleCare, it will be replaced for free. Else you will have to pay the $79 we all have. Of the 8 Mac portables I've owned, in only one did the power brick die on me. Replaced it at my cost, watched the Mac die a month later.

My computer is extremely slow, with the rainbow wheel appearing with every click. It is one year old, and has all the most recent updates. Why is it so painfully slow?

That sounds horrible. There are a number of reasons it could occur.
The first thing to do is ensure you have adequate backups, because what you describe can be a symptom of impending disk failure.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting. There are four separate parts to it; read everything first.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

Quite often the HDD is the source of the problems.  Look at this comprehensive guide for possible solutions:

  • Hi, my Macbook says its connected to the internet, but it's not working.  It's about 2 years old and has been fine up until now.  Its the same internet provider and I have a work PC laptop that is connecting fine.  Any help greatly appreciated.  Liz

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro won't connect to the internet, although it says it is connected.  The laptop is about 2 years old and up until now has worked fine.  My work PC laptop is connecting to the internet fine so I know it can't be the connection.   I've checked for Adware/Malware (just in case) via safemac and that all seems fine.
    I'm running OSX 10.8.5.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Liz

Believe it or not, that article helped me find a temporary solution. After reading it I realized that the problem did have to do with my DNS settings. I had taken the DNS settings that my ISP gives me when I dial up and plugged them into the configuration for my AirPort card. This apparently caused a problem because, although my wireless network is always on, it's not always connected to the internet. So those DNS settings were invalid most of the time.
I found that as long as I leave the area for DNS servers blank, the computer logs in normally. This further confirms my suspicion that something was trying to access the internet at login. I guess as long as I don't specify any DNS servers, the computer realizes it doesn't have an internet connection through my AirPort card.
So I just created two network locations: one for when my network is connected to the internet and one for when it isn't. In the first, I kept my original DNS settings because they work as long as I have an internet connection. In the second I did not specify any DNS servers. This seems to work fine, but I'd still like to know what is trying to access the internet at login. I've disabled the automatic update feature in all my programs that have it, but that doesn't seem to help the slowdown at login. Does anyone know how I could figure out what program is trying to access the internet?

  • I have a macbook pro a year old  that has started freezing a lot lately, why is this happening because it has been work great until now, what is the problem?

I have a Macbook Pro, a year old and it's started freezing all the time when I go to open pages, The small coloured wheel comes up a lot of the time, I have Mac Keeper and run this program but it doesn't sem to help. Do I have a problem with the hard drive or something else? This is very annoying.

Mac Keeper is a malware !!!!  Read here and unistall this crap >>>
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3027
MacKeeper can be regarded as highly invasive malware* that can de-stablize your operating system. It is unethically marketed by a company called Zeobit and a rip-off.
Further opinion on it and how to uninstall MacKeeper malware can be read here:

  • My iphone 4s is over 2 years old and I need to replace the battery. How much will this cost at an Apple store?

I have an iphone 4s that is  over 2 years old. The phone's battery is no longer able to hold a  charge for an acceptable length of time.  Assuming I need to replace the battery, how much will this cost at an Apple store?

Basically, I'm new to Apple, despite using them before, but I've never actually owned my own.
Since buying this phone off a colleague at work, I seem to be having problems with it. First, I noticed how rubbish the battery life is, then my charger almost went up in flames and thirdly my camera lense is scratched beyond belief.
I know the phone isn't within warranty, although I was lead to believe it was before and during buying it, so basically I'm extremely disappointed with the general make up of iPhone's considering they cost such a **** of a lot of money, you'd think they'd be built to last.
Back to my main point, how much would it cost for a new battery? Or a new camera lense if anyone can help me with that? (I know that the back of the phone was refurbished just before my buying it, so literally just the camera lense)
    Thanks!
So basically it sounds like you bought an abused used iPhone and somehow that makes the phone subpar because dispite the abuse it should still last forever and look like new? Batteries don't last forever, even under ideal conditions, so your expectatoins are unrealistic. Take it in and have an estimate done.

  • My four-year-old MacBook has started shutting itself down

My four year and one month old white Macbook, running Snow Leopard, has started shutting itself down - as in suddenly going from being on to being in a powered-down state - in the last two days.  In the last two days, it has shut itself down at least six times, I've lost count.  Before the last two days, it never shut itself down ever in four years that I can remember.  Five out of the six times it shut itself down, I was playing a PlayStation game via the PCSX emulator for OS X.  I had been playing this game on and off for about a week, give or take a day, before this started, without issue.
Yesterday, I started playing it, and the macbook shut itself down some time into it.  Thinking it was an overheating problem, I let it cool down for 15-20 minutes and tried again, and the macbook shut down again after maybe 10-15 minutes of use.  Again, I let the macbook cool down for 15-20 minutes, the results were the same.  I went through this again, this time ejecting the DVD that was in the drive and unplugging the power cord(to let the macbook run on battery, to see if that would make a difference), and it shut down again.  I then let the macbook cool down for probably 4 hours.  I then engaged in a two hour internet surfing session, in which the macbook did NOT shutdown.  I turned the computer off when I was finished, and a few hours later I tried the game again, and the macbook shut down again, after only 5-10(I think) minutes of use.
This morning, I tried again and there were was another shutdown.  After this, I tried another game(with another emulator), a 2D one as opposed to the 3D one I had been trying, and this went off without a hitch.  After that, I tried a different 3D game(in yet another emulator), and the macbook shut down again(and in this game I hadn't even started anything yet, I was just at the first menu screen were you select a save slot, that kind of thing).  After that, the computer was off for the rest of the day until the last two hours, during which I have been online, and there has been no shutdown as of yet.
I know this is a lot of detail, but I just wanted to illustrate the possible correlation between certain games and the shutdowns, even though I emphasize that I have played all of these games before without issue.  Additionally, I watched a full two and a half hour movie via DVD on my macbook either the night before or two nights before the shutdowns started(having trouble remembering) without any issue.  If it's an overheating issue, it just seems strange to me that it would get through a two and a half hour DVD without shutting down, but a game with 3D graphics - and this is mid-90s polygon early 3D graphics, not 2011 movie-like 3D graphics - would suddenly start making it shut down.
Anyway, I'm very concerned, and looking for any advice any of you can give.  Any assistance is appreciated.

I had two more shutdowns occur.  The first was while playing the same game that cause most of the previous shutdowns.  I had Activity Monitor open, and the CPU % was way over 100.  The second was while playing a 2D game, marking the first shutdown during a 2D game.  The CPU % wasn't as hight as the first time, but still up to around 75-85 or 90%.  I didn't notice the fans ramp up, but I may not have been listening hard enough.
