My iPhone 4 started System Restore on its own

This afternoon my iTunes suddenly stopped recognizing my phone and started a System Restore over Wi-Fi on its own. I was afraid it would lose connection so I connected the phone via hard wire about 10 minutes in.  It's been trying to restore itself for about 5 hours and the "time remaining" is growing rather than decreasing. When I left the house it said 15 minutes, now it reads 4 hours. My phone only reads "Restore in Progress."  I'm not sure what to do now.  I don't want to disconnect and risk making things worse.  Should I just let it go overnight ond hope for the best or is there something else I can do?
Thanks.

  • My iPhone  5 keeps turning off on its own randomly what should I do

My iPhone  5 keeps turning off on its own randomly, sometimes turning itself back on automatically but sometimes staying off, i have tried a system restore but has no effect, what should I do?

Do you have a case on the iPhone? Did you accidentally drop it or damage it in anyway?
You could try restoring the iPhone and setting it up as a new device, as shown here -> iOS: How to back up your data and set up as a new device

My iPhone keeps deleting my notes on its own.

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod

    Mac OS 10.5 /
I deleted the " Private" folder ... and emptied the trash. So the folder and its contents no longer exists on my computer at all !!!
I do have the OS 10.5 dvd that i purchased years ago...
But my computer will not start from it on its own.
My question is what is the open source or terminal language code used to tell my mac to look in the DVD rom drive for startup info?  I know that im not the only person in this world who has deleted the "PRIVATE" folder and emptied the trash so it no longer exists on their machine...
That said theres gotta be a common fix for a Power PC G4 that has the OS X dvd in the rom drive but wont look to it to reinstall the vital contents of the PRIVATE folder.
Once again there is not a copy of this file or its contents in the recycle bin...
Also rebooting the machine , pressing and holding the letter C does not prompt the machine to look to the dvd rom drive.
I was reinstalling pro tools and figured I would make some room by cleaning my computers HD...
Lol It was a bad choice to delete this file ...
    Thanks guys

Okay sorry it took forever to respond... But for a while there I gave up on this computer!!!!
Money's been tight lately , so taking it in to a professional was not yet an option... though I did consider it eventhough.
Anyway long story short im glad I didnt spend any money because I already had all the tools necessary to fix this issue but was going about it in the wrong way. Okay so here is my scenario and the breakdown... Though this may not fix the issue for everyone :( which *****... But I know we all will have different circumstances.
    Anyway here we go...
Okay so first things first....  Years ago I purchased the OS 10.5.1 disk ... So that has always been in my possession!!!!
I realize that some may not have a disk to reflash your OS to your hard drive... but if you do your in luck.
2ndly ... I had an external harddrive with all of my itunes downloaded music so it was more than okay with me to delete my primary HD because all the important stuff could either be copied over or repathed to be located.
-------If you dont want to read through the whole story the fix is summed up in the bottom section-------
    Okay so now the SOLUTION!!!!
By trial and error , and pure boredom I opened up my computer to clean the inside...
    AND
    "Disconnected the primary HD"
and just because ....... REBOOTED my computer. Just to see what it would do.
Upon restart and though it looked like it would repeat its usual cycle...
About 1 minute in to that process my computer froze for about 2 seconds and flashed to the OS installation screen.
Mind you I havent seen this screen yet... Probably hasnt been since I installed the OS years ago.
After a bit of trial and error...
I decided to tell my computer to startup from the OS 10.5 disk located in my dvd rom drive and restarted once again...
    this setting is under
    Utilities / startup disk
After a little more trial and error ... I realized that I could reconnect the primary HD , restart the machine and return to the OS installation menu.
    So upon this discovery
I went to the Disk Utility located under Utilities
Highlighted my primary HD located in the left hand column
    Once highlighted ...
In the heading section on the right I selected the option
    Erase
in which I erased My current OS on my primary HD ...
I used the first option in the list under security... Because it seemed like the least invasive and would take the least amount of time to see if this process would actually work.
    I FORGOT to add something...
Another reason why I deleted my primary HD!!!!!
I forgot to say that it WOULD NOT!!!!! Show up in the STARTUP list as an option...Even After multiple reboots....
But like clockwork... Once I deleted its name IT SHOWED UP as an option!!!!
So back to the next step...
I returned to the STARTUP option under utilities ... And was then able to see MY primary HD now as a startup option...
But ofcourse it had no name because it we previously erased it.
So when Clicking my newly erased HD ... I was almost immediately prompted to REINSTALL the OS ...
Which said it would take about 57 minutes ... But I believe was alot less...
My issue was resolved ... My computer then stated the install was SUCCESSFUL!!!!!!! :))))))))))) lol ;)
It was like I was setting up for the first time ;) asking for my registration info...
The dilemma of deleting the private folder and emptying the trash is finally over resolved. Done ... and no extra money spent!!!!!!!!!
Its really crazy that the information for such a simple thing is not readily available. Especially being such a simple fix.
I know im not the only person who's had this issue , because i've seen numerous posts with similar wording.
I also know I wont be the last person to have this issue... So I hope this synopsis makes sense.
    -------One more time the fix------
*Insert your OS dvd into your dvd rom drive.
*Unplug your primary HD or corrupted startup disk
    *Reboot your machine...
Upon restart your primary HD will not be recognized...
    * you will then be prompted to select your language.
    Once selected
*Click Utilities/startup... Highlight the the selection that refers to the OS dvd located in the dvd rom drive.
    * Click restart...
!!!!!!!!!!Be sure to reconnect your Primary HD Before your computer restarts and you hear the chime!!!!!!!!
If you do not replug your HD before the chime it will not be recognized.
    In that case restart again.
    Upon restart once again
    *Choose your language...
    *Click Utilities / disk utility
In the left column select and
    *Highlight your HD ...
Then towards the top portion / center of the page
    *Click the heading Erase
Then on the page toward the bottom
    *Click security options
This will then provide erase options.
    I USED THE FIRST OPTION
    "Dont erase data"...
    *click OK
    * click erase...
Once erased which should take a few seconds
    *Cancel the disk utility...
    * Click Utilities / startup
And your newly erased HD should now appear in the list.
    * Select your drive from the list by highlighting
It should no longer have a name.
*Once selected, you will then be prompted to restart and install the OS to your newly erased HD...
    Thats it!!!!
Once everything reinstalls re-add your personal info or registration info and you are up and running.
    Goodluck ;)

My MacBook Pro 10.6.8 prompted me of a new itunes update this morning, so i downloaded it. Since then itunes has been starting up randomly on its own, and starts playing the first song on the list. I pause the song, and it resumes it on its own again. I'm not joking. So, I end up quiting out of itunes; but, it starts right back up again on its own. After quiting out of the app a few times, it eventually stops reopening; however, about an hour later (or less) it opens again. HOW DO I MAKE IT STOP? I'm just about to delete itunes, because I've had enough of this crap. I hope someone can help. I've restarted the laptop, and it seemed like that fixed it, then itunes started up doing the same thing again an hour later. ituneshelper is unchecked; bluetooth is off; i only have speakers and a mouse plugged in (also charger).

Read this Apple Discussion Thread and possible solutions. The audio jack has been the main culprit, also certain sync and automation settings including connected remotes.

  • Ipod touch 4th gen restores on its own

hello, the last few times that my ipod has died when i charged it again i find that it is completely restored on its own [asking me to plug into itunes]
i'm not sure why this is happening? i was wondering if this happened to anyone else?
i've been trying to not to let it die so that it doesn't happen

That happens sometimes. An iPod goes into Connect to iTunes when it encounters an error. It did not "restore". The screen is telling yo to connect the iPod to your computer so you can restore via iTunes.

  • Iphone likes to shut down on its own when handled

For the last week my iphone has got a mind of its own and like to try to shut down on its own. Sometimes it would give me the red button+slide to turn off...sometimes it just goes to the Apple logo then shuts down.
No hacks on it, maybe two apps max like ebay so really nothing that would point out to an issue. This is also a replacement my original phone had a screen issue this summer where you could not touch anything else than the bottom bar. I swapped it for this one so it is virtually new.
Not sure if it is the button on the top that is stuck and it does not look like it.
Any similar experiences? I heard other users had issues with their iphone shutting down for no reason.

It does sound like the Sleep/Wake button may be stuck or overly sensitive.
If you lightly tap on it, does the phone turn off?

  • My iphone 5s has a mind of its own. why?

my iphone 5s is out of control. everytime i use to it send messages or anything it just starts typing on its own, opening apps, one second im on imessage then suddenly im in the music app. and like today i wanted to send a message while in class. and the phone started going crazy again and it opened the music app and played music, it was embrassing.
i cant use it without it losing control everytime, sending messages that arent even finished. this happened a week after purchasing the phone. and its been going on for 3 days now non-stop, i restored, hard reset, started from scratch. nothing seems to help.
there are  two other things ive noticed  in my phone :
    1. first there are four vertical lines on the right side of my phone, 2 blue and 2 red (blue, red, blue, red). they arent easily noticble unless you have a black backround. they were there from the first day i got the phone. it didnt bother me much really because its not so showy.
    2. second when my phones goes crazy typing things and opening apps and all that. its mostly from the right side. the same area where those line are.
i hope this can tell me whats the problem...

If a cold reset of the iPhone does not sort out both the control and screen issues, the iPhone is up for return in the nearest Apple Store. Apple should replace the device for you free of charge.

  • IPhone 5 has a life of its own

I started noticing that my iPhone was acting weird after upgrading it to iOS 7.
    1. When the phone is in sleep mode and someone calls you, you wont be able to accept the call because the screen is not working.
    2. When you wake up the phone from its sleep mode, you wont be able to unlock the phone because the screen is not working.
    3. If you happen to answer a call from its sleep mode, the phone will start dialling numbers or even end the call.
    4. If you happen to unlock the phone from its sleep mode, the phone will have a life of its own and will start to open/close apps. Usually it will go to Messages and type "qzqzzqaqzqzqqaqzqzqzq" nonstop. Luckily, I haven't experienced the phone deleting anything by itself.
    5. The funny thing is, I can bypass these problems!
*I can accept a call using the Apple Earpods.
*I can unlock the phone from its sleep mode by pressing the wake-up button 3 times  and everything is back to normal.
*I can also accept calls while using the phone.
But now I'm sick and tired of doing these steps. I want a permanent solution.
    *Phone is updated to 8.1.2
*Tried hard reset (Home button + Sleep button)
*Tried erasing the phone's content and restoring it.
*I haven't tried erasing without restoring the phone and use it like a brand new phone.
*I haven't tried removing the screen protector (free from otter case)
    Can anyone please help me?
    Thank you.

have you tried erasing it from the device or by a forced restore to completely reinstall ios? there are differences because if you restore from the phones menu, and there is a error in the software restoring from the menu it is possible the issue persists. if you did a restore, you should contant apple care there is probably something wrong with the device it's hardware!

  • Iphone 3gs shuts down & reboots on its own.

The 2 yr old iphone 3gs shuts down on its own and the silver apple icon pops up ~ the phone boots itself up. This has been happening more frequently, since Dec 2010. I could be on the internet, or using any app and it does this. A couple times I had to simutaneously hold down the power and home buttons to turn on the phone, and, or, unfreeze the phone. I always charge my phone, and regularly sync it with the latest upgrade(s). What is going on?

I had this, but I have now rectified the issue. It's an app?
I de-selected all my apps and just left the standard ones on.
I did a full restore from backup but did not sync any apps.
Problem solved, no more dropped calls. No more apple logo for no reason.
I am slowly re-adding my apps, 1 or 2 at a time, I have over 150 so it may take a while but so far I have reloaded about 10 of my most used ones and still everything fine. I will find the one that caused the problem eventually!!
Happy bunny again though, as I have a phone that can actually make a call for more than 5 minutes!!

  • IPhone 5 acting up - commands on its own?

Hi - Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?
My iPhone 5 just started cycling through various parts of iOS 6 or apps on its own. Sometimes without touching it, it will open and activate Siri.  It will close email and open another app. Then pop open Siri (which would take me hitting and holding a button.)  When I try to power it off, it takes a photo of the screen, so I think it has to be something going on with the home button.
I managed to get it to finally power off (which took about 20 tries since it kept taking a picture of the screen instead!) and I'm still experiencing the problem after restarting.
Anyone else seeing this?  Do you think it's a manufacturing issue with my home button?
It's the black, 64GB model.  And I love it but need it to do what *I* want, not what *it* wants to do!
    Thanks!

Yes, I've been having the same problem. The screen swipes on its own, goes into messages, wants to edit or delete messages goes into email launches apps and quits them. Really bizarre. Like its haunted or someone else is controlling it. Does it when its in my hand or on the table. I thought it might be my case but it is not.  I kept the plastic covering that came with the phone on, but I trimmed off the top where the speaker is so I can hear clearly. I thought it might be that but it was still happening. I just noticed that I still have the original clear plastic on the back as we'll. I was just trying to keep the phone from getting scratched. I've removed that now and we'll see what happens. Did you find a fix to the problem?

  • My iPhone 4S Decides to Roam on its Own

My job requires that I cross the border between Kuwait & Saudi Arabia 5 days a week.
My SIM is from a carrier in Kuwait named Zain.
I have went into Settings -> Carrier, and switched "Automatic" off and selected Zain as my network.
This works fine until a couple of days ago.
I crossed the border as usual going to work and the signal was lost as expected and now I see "No Service" on the top left corner of my screen.
Around 1:30pm of that same day, while I was working on my iPhone while connected to a Wi-Fi network at work, I noticed that the phone was actually connected to a carrier in Saudi Arabia.
I double checked the carrier settings again just to be sure if the setting is bugged or for some odd reason, "Automatic" was set to on.
To my surprise, it was still off!
Why is my iPhone 4S roaming on its own? I can easily prevent such roaming charges.
I need my iPhone to be on and connected to Wi-Fi but I don't need its voice services while I'm across the border.
Anyone else facing this? Share your thoughts please.
    Thanks.

Thanks Noel but I tend to disagree.
You see, I previously owned an iPhone 3GS and an iPhone 4. All worked perfectly. Upon switching off automatic selection of a carrier and only selecting my home network, those 2 phones stayed with No Service until they sniff a signal from my home network provider.
That's not the case with iPhone 4S.
My iPhone 4S today for example went out of service at about 7:45am after I crossed the border.
at about 1:30pm, it decided on its own to connect to a roaming network. It shouldn't. Because I'm selecting my carrier manually. So worst case scenario, it should at least prompt for availability of other carriers without connecting to them.
Last but not least, roaming charges in my case will be charged against my number once I receive or make a phone call or SMS. I'd like to avoid that. I did tests that clearly showed saving over $100 a month of roaming charges when I do so. Yes, our carrier is a vampire
