My iPhone 4 will not install iOS 5.1.1

I have tried numerous times since the update was available and it always says "Unable to Install Update. An error occured installing iOS 5.1.1" I am connected to the internet, so do not understand the problem.
I have also tried downloading the update from my laptop but it will not let me do so through that either.

I had this problem with an iOS update once. It would download most of the way (thus eating up my quota), then bug out before the end.
Suggestions at the time ranged from trying another day (in case the update servers were overloaded) to asking my nearest Apple Store to download and install the update for me.
My nearest Apple Store was 250km away, but yours might be closer. Or the download might work better on another day.
Good luck. :)

iOS- Unable to update or restore
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
Have you tried connecting to your computer and updating via iTunes?
You may have to do a full restore to upgrade:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
If you have a problem getting into recovery mode then try: RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • IPhone 4s will not install the 7.0.3 Software Update.

I have an iPhone 4s. It will not install the 7.0.3 Software Update (nor would it install the one prior). However, my friend who has the exact same phone, with at least double the pictures, and probably about 10 more apps, had no problem doing so, though she bought more storage anway and suggested I do the same. I bought the 10gb, for a total of 15 on my phone, deleted the few apps I had, and started to do backups to icloud.
Not only are my images missing from icloud when I log in (even though when I check the icloud settings in my phone they should be backing up), but I still have not been able to do the Software Update. When I go to 'Storage and Backup' in my phone it says 'Total Storage: 15.0 gb', and 'Available: 2.3 gb'. These numbers never seem to change, regardless of doing backups and deleting things.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    1. Why aren't my pictures there when I log in to icloud?
    2. Why can't I update my phone?
    Rhonda

Having more storage in your iCloud account does not expand the storage on your phone.  If you don't have enough free space on your phone to update, you'll have to delete some data to do so (such as deleting all your music, then syncing it back to your phone after you update).
Also, backing up your photos to iCloud only allows you to restore them to your phone later if you ever need to, it doesn't allow you to access the photos from iCloud.  It also doesn't give you more space on your phone as it only backs up your photos, it doesn't delete them from your phone.  If you want your photos in iCloud, turn on photo stream.  This will actually take more space on your phone, not less, as you will get a duplicate photo in your photo stream album to the one in your camera roll.
If your storage isn't increasing as you delete data from your phone, try deleting your iCloud backup and backing up again.

  • Iphone 4 will not acknowledge iOS 6 update

Hello. I have a new iPad and it acknowledged the new iOS6 update as soon as it was avalible, and it downloaded quickly. However my iPhone 4 will not. When I go into Software Updates it searches and then reads "iOS 5.1.1 Your software is up to date". I've turned my phone on and off, did a hard reboot, and have had no luck getting iOS 6 to even come up as a downladable option. Please advise. Thank you!

try updating it in itunes, you need to make a back up first and transfer purchases

  • Syncing iPhone - applications will not install message

After some trouble with my two month old iPhone4S I did a Master reset after a full backup. Now when I want to restore the application most of them (not all) will not install on the phone. Doing them one by one looks good in iTunes but on the phone I get the message "Application 'xxx' will not install". Any ideas on how to proceed?

If that's my only option then I may just buy it from the App Store and see if that works. It would cost me at least that in gas to get to my "local" Apple store. It just seems weird to me. All of a sudden iPhoto and iMovie stop working. I completely reset my macbook and I still get the same error. I've done the "Hardware Test" and the DVD looks flawless. I'm really just throwing my hands up.

  • Iphone driver will not install

i have just bought an iphone 3GS on ebay.plugged it in to itunes to restore it. the data was wipped and i got a message saying driver not installed. iphone is now not recognised in itunes or my computer and says in recovery mode in device manager. phone now does not work. help

Hopefully you didn't buy a jailbroken iPhone or you may never get it working (a reason to avoid buying on on ebay).  If Windows does not recognize the phone (it isn't shown in device manager), check item number 4 at the bottom of this guide (Apple Mobile Device USB Driver): http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538.  If Windows does recognize it but iTunes doesn't, then work through the other troubleshooting steps in this guide, particularly items 2& 3 at the bottom (Apple Mobile Device Service).

  • IPhone drivers will not install (windows 7)

    Haya there,
I have around 1100 photo's on my iPhone and I was planning to save some on my harddisc so I could free up some space on my phone itself.
Easiest way to do this is plug it in, open the iPhone as a flash drive and drag and drop really.
    Now here is my issue:
When I plug in my iPhone it says the drivers have failed to install.
the "Apple Mobile Devive USB Driver" gets installed without any problems. However when it gets to the installing of the iPhone itself it fails.
Meaning, I CAN acces my iPhone trough iTunes just fine. Just not as a flash drive on windows.
    Things I have tried:
I've uninstalled both the iPhone and apple mobile device drives, reinstalled them but with the reoccuring same error.
I've uninstalled and re-installed iTunes, downloaded it from the website to make sure I have the newest version.
I've uninstalled and re-installed my USB hub drivers as this was something someone mentioned while I was googling the problem.
I've tried plugging it into different USB ports on my pc, but with the same error when it tried to install the drivers.
I've restarted my pc multiple times in the vein hope that the magic of the restart would cure all.
    Noticable:
I've plugged in my phone onto my old laptop (windows vista) and the phone got recognised there without problems. So the problem will be within my desktop, not the phone or cable.
    - I use a desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with Service Pack 1
    - I'm running iTunes version 11.0.2
I know I can transfer the photo's to my pc using my photostream. At this very moment Im transfering the photo's to my laptop as it is working on there. Where Ill dump them on my external harddisc. But I still want the problem fixed for next time. I should be able to just plug in my phone and get acces to my photo's even when there is no wifi around or when I dont have my laptop at hand.
Thank you in advance for your help

  • IPhone support will not install.

I'm rather desperate here. It's been months since I've last been able to change my selection of music on my iPhone. My PC will simply not allow mobile device support to install. It has got no reason for doing so, other than simply being difficult. The only detail I can give is that it stops installing, at which exact point I'm not certain, and starts rolling back. It then gives me a screen stating -
"Apple Mobile Device Support Installer Completed
The installer encountered errors before AppleMobie
    Device Support could be configured.
Your system has not been modified. To retry these
operations at a later time, please run the installer again.
Click Finish to exit the installer."
Any advice, and perhaps solutions, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time,
    GRAYINATOR

Thanks anyone for any help or consideration, but I solved this one myself.
But for anyone else who might have this issue, please allow me to elaborate.
The only issue, really, was that the designated folder actually had older (non-working) files in it. I simply had to delete them to be allowed installation.

  • My iPad will not install iOS 7.1.1

I've been attempting to install the iOS 7.1.1 update on my iPad since last evening but no go. It worked on my iPhone and iPod Touch. Are other people running into this problem, and is there a solution?

Before you try using iTunes, try closing all of the apps on the iPad and reset the device. then try using the WiFi udpate again. WiFi is so much faster if you can get it to work.
In order to close apps in iOS 7, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Try the WiFi update one more time.

I've attempted around 10 x's. It will start the download (saying 26hrs to complete!!) and then time out after about 30 mins. I'm running Maverick on my iMac & MacBook. Thoughts?

    Hi LaxMan007,
Not being able to even download the update (and the reported time to download) imply this is a networking issue.

  • IPhone 4 will not sync, iOS is 5.0.1, iTunes 10.5.1.  Have already completely uninstalled iTunes and rebooted both devices.

I've followed all the tutorials, deleted iTunes completely and it still won't sync after redownloading iTunes.
From what I've read nobody has an answer on this yet.  Any help appreciated.

I was just trying to get the phone to be recognized at all by iTunes.  iTunes wasn't recognizing the device at all.  What I was trying to sync was irrelevant.
I talked to Apple support and they weren't sure, but had me just plug and unplug it a bunch of times and eventually it catches on.  It's probably a bug that we'll have to wait for the next version of iTunes or iOS to fix.

Obviously since you have iOS 7 you're a developer.  As a developer, you signed a NDA with Apple not to discuss the iOS on a public forum.  Please log in to the Developer Forum using your credentials and ask for help there, lest you risk having your credentials terminated.

Wow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum.  Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is.  Apple is not here.  It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off.
