Have you tried resetting all phone settings? Go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings.

The error on the Mac is odd though. 2100 is not in the article. What version of the Mac Operating system are you running?

Today, after it happened twice in 12 hours, someone told me to reset - i thought they meant reset all settings, not network settings. while in the middle of resetting, there was an invalid SIM card again. so a few questions - which should i do first? try to manually back up from itunes (not connected to cloud - will be after tonight!), or eject SIM card? don't know if one will jeopardize the other. also, the last time i backed up was 6 days ago - have taken hundreds of pics since then - are those all lost? is there a way to essentially not reset? i thought the reset was okay because it said i'd lose no data or media. Help! thanks much!

Sounds like you've switched on something under accessibility, I have an iPhone 5s & there it's under settings>General>accessibility.
To swipe you could try using two fingers.

Iphone 4 has a black screen which will display the apple logo for approx 10 seconds, then goes blank for 10 seconds and so on. I have tried a hard reset with power button and home button but no change. Get no response when attempting to connect to itune

iphone 4 has a black scrren which will display the apple logo and appears to be at start up but then blacks out for approx 10 seconds and then displays apple logo again. Same action over and over.
I have attempted hard reset but cannot complete. Also attempted to connect with itunes and it does not recongize device.
Device is frozen in this display loop. Have an appointment with genius bar tomorrow but it's a 2.5 hour round trip so suggestion appreciated.

Your device may need to be restored as new in iTunes (instead of restored from a back up as it seems that there is a software issue on your phone).
If your phone is not able to connect in iTunes try forcing recovery mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808)
* power off your phone.
* Hold the home button while connecting your phone to iTunes. You should see the connect to iTunes window and your computer should give you the recover mode alert.
*Restore your device as new. Being sure not to restore from a previous back up.
You will then want to sync your information back to your device from Outlook, iCloud, Google or wherever your information is stored.

Try a Hard Reset.....
Press and hold the Wake / Sleep button AND the Home button at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple Logo appears on the screen, it can take 10 or more seconds. Ignore the swipe to turn off message.

You can restore the software of the device through iTunes.
Depending on your computer operationg system ( Mac or Windows) you will need to find the menu bar ( File, Edit, View...etc) and click View > Show Sidebar.

Try cleaning the dock connector. Try a new cable or charger.
If no luck, it should be covered under warranty.

You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.

USB connection to iTunes. Back up your 3GS with your last 3GS back up. DON'T use an iPhone 4 back up or higher. It will cause exactly this.
