It sounds as though screen curtain has been enabled on your iPhone. This can be disabled by tapping three times with three fingers on your iPhone's screen.
Turn the screen curtain on or off. Triple-tap with three fingers. When the screen curtain is on, the screen contents are active even though the display is turned off.

Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the screen is black. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.

Try plugging it it to see if the screen comes on. If not then you're screen is damaged.

HT1430 my iphone 4s screen randomly went black and the phone still works like when i screenshot things etc, but the screen is black and i cant see aything.

Try and fix it yourself now. Since you opened it up to remove the battery, you have voided all possability of support from Apple. They will not even offer you an out of warranty replacement now.
Sorry, but other than looking at places like www.ifixit.com and trying to trouble shoot it yourself, you could take it to some shop (there are no Apple authorized iOS device repair centers) and pay to have them try and fix it. Or just buy yourself a new phone.

If your screen is too dim, too bright, or you see only faint images

If you have a screen protector, try removing it. Try removing your case if it includes a screen protector.

Basically,
A couple of weeks ago I sent a text then put my iPhone 4S down on my desk. When the reply came back my screen was completely blank. I could still here it working in the background, when screenshoting and pressing the screen randomly while it is locked. The first thing I tried was to reset the phone. This worked and I thought it was just a one off thing. No.
A few days ago the exact same scenario happened except this time the screen never returned. This time I tried to rest the phone many times but it still would not come back. I then booked an appointment at an Apple store where they said i would probably have to pay £146 for a new phone as it was deemed as 'accidental damage' although I have never dropped or hit my phone. This is also my second phone this year as in February the lock button failed but then Apple kindly supplied me with a new phone free of charge. After booking my apple store visit my screen somehow just came back without any reason. I couldnt make the Apple store appointment anymore and had to cancel but I thought I had got my phone back. I then proceeded to back-up my phone to parents computer, as my MacBook is also currently not working, just in case this screen thing happened again.
Well. It did. Last night, just as i was going to bed. The phone was in my hand the whole time, one minute I'm texting, next minute I just assume that the phone has locked itself but no it has just gone again. As I am now working every day for the next 11 days, I think as my calandar was on on my phone, I have no time to either visit an Apple store, closest of which is around an hour away, or visit my parents to try and restore my phone.
So any help here would be great.

Since the genius bar has already confimed your phone has a hardware issue, there isn't much anyone here can suggest you do. There is no software fix for a hardware issue.

If the reset doesn't do it then it's possible that the backlight or another part of your screen has broken. Unfortunately it's not really user servicible. I'd make an appointment at your local apple store and have them check it out. If your device is still under warranty and they don't determine that the damage was the result of 'abuse or neglect' (their words) then it could be a free replacement.
I'd just do a backup before you take it in, just in case.

my friend has a iphone 4s and the screen has just gone blank she has tried to reset it to factory settings but it still hasnt sorted it

try this:
- first, let it charge using a good charger and power souce for at least 20 minutes
- try a hard reset. thats where u hold down the home button and the power button at the same time.
- recovery mode restore. hold down the home button while u plug it into a power source and keep holding down the home button for up to 30 seconds. u should see an itunes logo with a usb cord plugging into it appear on the screen. if that happens then u can restore it using itunes on ur pc.
do those steps in order before trying the next step.
if none of that works u HAVE to get the device replaced.

I think a recent downpour has caused some issues with my iPhone 5....
The phone (inc' speaker/microphone) still works but the screen doesn't light up. When I shine a torch on it I can see that it is still displaying everything, but it doesn't light up. As my phone is out of warranty (and in the UK) what needs to be replaced in order to resolve the issue? Would it just be the the screen and digitizer or the mainboard?
