A back up of the phone wouldnt help at all. A back up simply is like a saved file of the contents of the phone. To troubleshoot issue with connecting to WiFi follow the article below.

If no change after resetting network settings on your iPhone and restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, you can call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

I find mine can be quite 'flaky'.
I have issues with video playback mostly: facebook videos, you tube videos, imdb videos.
I find I need to use 3G often, and I also speed test the wifi regulary
I need to turn off wifi, then turn off the phone then turn it back on and then turn wfi back on and its ok.
not really acceptable though, as i shoudlnt have to do this!

Here is what fixed my wife's phone after several weeks of no wifi. We had removed the Sims card and transferred to another phone which was running ios 6. My son was visiting and said Apple had come out with an update a few days ago and he decided to attempt to install it on the 4s phone that had no wifi and no cellular because the sims card was removed. He tapped the icon to update the new ios version and received the message to the effect that No WiFi available would you like to search for available networks. He selected yes and immediately the wifi came on and has been working now for two days. Also we never installed the update to the new ios.
My advice is to remove your sims card like we did or trun off your cellular and attempt the update to see if you get the message to search for available networks and then of course choose yes. Go figure. Hope this works for you.

The iPhone warranty is not international. Apple will only honor the warranty in the country where the iPhone was sold.
If your WiFi connections button in Settings is greyed out, see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559 and if you want to Troubleshoot, and can access the router, http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398 those may help but you probably need to have the iPhone tested by an Apple technician.

IPhone 5 wifi stopped working last night

It's worked fine over the last couple of months but last night I went to download a song and couldn't get onto my wifi. I've tried to connect to multiple different networks, some with security and some without but it hasn't worked for any of them. I've turned the phone on and off, restored it to factory setting etc but nothing has worked. Occasionally when I try to connect it gives me a message about the wifi "not giving an internet connection." Is this a hardware issue and should I take it in to an apple store? (Software is all up to date also).

If you are in your one year limited hardware warranty then the service will not cost you anything so long as you do not have any hardware/liquid damage to the phone. If you are out of warranty please expect to pay $199 out of warranty fee to get the device repaired/replaced.

Problem with iPhone 5: Wifi Only Works When Close to Wifi Router

I've recently updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 6.0.2. I am actually having a problem with the wifi connection. In which, I can only uses the wifi when I'm close to the wifi router.It seems when I'm further than about 2/3 meters away from the router I get no connection, and then sometimes (not often) I get it and then it goes again.
Any suggestion on how to fix that?

Having exactly the same issue, WiFi on 6.0.1 worked fine for me. Now I have to be sat next to the router. I've tried forgetting the newtworks and joining them again and no joy. I had 4 known networks and none of them work. Will there be an update for this? 6.0.3? Or are we stuck with it?

Cant send/recieve email from iPhone on wifi - 3G works fine

I cant send or recieve email on my iPhone / iPad when on WIFI - when I turn off WIFI, it all works fine on 3G. I tried to delete my exchange-account, and then both gmail accounts works fine on wifi. Any thoughts?

Make sure that your router is setup to not block any ports.
as well check with your ISP to ensure those servers are not blocked.
you shouln't have any issues with receiving mail. the outgoing would be the only issue you should be having.
make sure you add an alternate SMTP server (using your ISP's server) to send email when on wifi

Contacted apple support but they had no idea and as they cannot support the iPhone in Belgium but rattier their crappy chosen GSM provider that the word support does not exist in their world.
My iPhone 3GS works like a charm.
