My iPhone 5 doesn't want to restore.

It was overheating for some weird reason and I shut it down so it can cool off. When I tried to turn it back on, the Apple logo kept coming on and off in a continuos loop. After I attempted to restore, I got an error: "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (2001)." I keep getting the same error after every attempt. I don't know what to do anymore and I think my phone is out of warranty. I just got it early January and I haven't had any problems with it til now. PLEASE HELP!
My iPhone is NOT jailbroken. I don't like my Apple products jailbroken.

Go further down on the same screen and look for more information. (I do not remember the exact words) Upon clicking on it a new page opens in Safari for instructions, including opening Terminal under Utilities, etc. Then you will have to add # and a space to one of the lines. Then save and restart the computer. It worked for me. I am sorry I do not remember the exact sequence of these steps. Hope this helps you.

You will need to set it up as a new phone, not from a backup, first. Then, after setup is complete, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi and have at least 50% battery power. After then update downloads and installs, you can go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
This will let you go through the setup again, and this time you can choose your backup.

At what stage does the restore fail?
Are you trying to update the iOS?
Are you getting an error code? Have you looked it up using the handy link?
Have you tried rebooting your computer?
Have you tried a different cable?
Have you tried a different USB Port?

thanks for your reply but if i upgrade the new phone to ios7 I will have to erase the Iphone to start again in other to get to the page where I have to chose restore from icloud, wont this process reverse the operating system back to ios6 or is that another way to restore other than erase and reinstall. pls help

iOS version? iTunes version? Windows or Mac? Operating System? Direct to USB? USB Hub? I'll give you a quarter for a clue...

It sounds like you are getting the error code 50 when trying to sync your phone. I would recommend this section specifically from the article named:

hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.

Connect your iPhone to Computer. On iTunes left Pane, under "Devices" right mouse click iPhone and select "Restore from Backup..." then select one of the three backup (Date and Time)

HOld down the home button and the power button (The button on the top right of your device that powers it on and off) of the device for about 10-15 seconds and see if you see an apple appear; if not, attempt it two more times...if so you can let it go when you see hte apple.

My iphone 3g does not want to download apps, it keeps on asking me for a software update but when I do update it, itunes says the opperating software on the phone is the current version. My iphone is opperating on 4.2.1 & the massage that I get from the apps is that, they require the latest software version which is 4.3 & upwards...

You can only download a compatible version if the developer chose to leave it available. This is not always the case.
Unfortunately, if the steps in the article provided don't help, there is nothing else you can do to get new apps on your phone. You will have to purchase a new phone at some point.

Well the phone was working fine just listening to music then it shut off completely and started relooping the apple logo. so I put it in DFU mode, connect it to itunes so that itunes can detect it being in recovery mode to be restored and updated. but after it was preparing for update I get errors 2001, then I would retry again and get 1600, I did recall getting 3014 when im doing the exact same thing over and over hoping it would go through with the process.
