My iPhone 5 is suddenly having audio issues through the headphone jack.

So this is a strange situation, and I'll try to explain in depth so that someone might be able to suggest a solution. As reference, I have an iPhone 5 that I purchased in late-February. I've had every other model of iPhone except for the first iPhone, so I am pretty familiar with the device. I used to be on AT&T, and switched to Verizon when I upgraded to the iPhone 5.
Two days ago, I was on a six hour road-trip, and I'd been playing my music like normal through my car's auxillary cable. After stopping for lunch, I went to plug my music again, but once the music started to play, I realized that only the drums were playing at normal levels while the vocals were very, very soft. I switched through a few different songs, and realized that all the songs were being played at different levels; sometimes the backup vocals were normal levels while the instrumentation and lead vocals were quiet, or vice versa. I decided to plug my iPhone in to charge, and when I did this, the audio levels were all normal. However, the iPhone was NOT charging. I removed the charger, and the audio went back to being weak and distorted. I went back and forth at this for a bit, trying to figure out what was going on.
Since then and after some testing, I realize that my iPhone will now only charge anywhere EXCEPT in the car charger (I simply use my USB cable that came with my iPhone and plug it into the power adapter I have in the car). This morning, I tested the audio in my home speaker system, and I had the same audio issues. Only half the song's tracks would be at normal audio levels, while the other half would be at a very quiet, almost nonexistent level. I tried plugging my charger into the phone to see if that'd make a difference, but instead of the audio going back to normal like it does in the car, the music stopped and there was just crackling and very noisy distortion sounds.
I'm super confused and not sure what to do. This has never happened to me with any of my iPhones. I am updating my software right now, and am hoping that that may help somehow. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. Any suggestions as to what I should do would be greatly appreciated!

Do the new iMacs have digital audio out through the headphone jack?
Yes.

  • HT4806 Mac mini digital audio out through the headphone jack

I'm misled by this sentence for audio out port from the support page: "For digital audio, you can use Apple iPhone headset with microphone".
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5539
It is there for all mac minis starting from 2010 model.
Does it mean electrical digital signal? Any chance to get S/PDIF coaxial signal?

If an optical signal is OK,  you just need one of these:

To convert the optical signal to a co-ax one will need a more complex/expensive convertor.

I connected my brand new iPod Classic 160 GB to my brand new Sony home entertainment system through the headphone jack (to the audio line in). The volume is ridiculously low. Can somebody help me out here?

Make sure the volume on the iPod is turned up fully, since this will affect what you hear through the stereo.
Make sure Volume Limit is set to full. (From Main Menu, Settings/Volume Limit)
If you purchased your iPod inside the EU (European Union), then the maximum volume from the headphone jack is lower than elsewhere in the world. If this is the case, buy yourself a 30-pin Dock Connector to 3.5mm jack lead, such as the one linked here...
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Decrescent-Connector-Stereo-Auxiliary-iPhone/dp/B007NIE5 EE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386012456&sr=8-1&keywords=30+pin+to+3.5mm
That connector will take a higher volume out (than the European Union's output) and that will be louder (and hopefully loud enough) through your stereo.

  • My ipod video wont play sound through the headphone jack or the bottom connector

Hello everyone. I have an iPod Video 60GB (supports video output through the headphone jack). Which I believe was the last one before the iPod "classic".
Anyways awhile back it stopped outputting sound through the headphone jack, I assumed I had damaged the jack itself as commonly happens but it stopped outputting sound through the dock connector to my ipod speaker dock and my cars ipod connector. The clicker wont make any noise either.
When I tried to search for an answer to this problem years ago I couldnt find anything and knowing it would be out of warrenty I put it aside and forgot about it. Having searched again recently it seems as if this could be the audio processor or some component on the board coming loose? Has anyone outlined this problem with pictures and steps to repair it?
I *may* take it in and pay the $30 but I would much prefer to fix it myself. Thank you for any help with this.

Update: The model # is MA147LL. Not sure why my edit didnt take effect.

  • My sound is coming from my built in speakers instead of through the headphone jack.

I have an Envy 15 1270ca and last night it froze while I was listening to music, forcing me to manually shut it off by holding down the power button. When the computer came back on, my sound was coming out of my built-in speakers instead of my external speakers through the headphone jack. I checked the speakers through my mp3 player, so I know that they are working, so it seems to be the jack which is not working.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • From what I've read the new Macbook Pros do not recognize a line-in through the headphone jack. I want to record my guitar on GarageBand without using the built in mic. Any advice?

I have all the adapters and stuff like that, I have recorded a lot of things on audacity on my p.c. For $2500 you would think they would have at least kept the input through the headphone jack feature in this mac. I am using an acoustic and an eletric guitar and I don't want to spend more than about $20 to resolve this.

I had a fast tracks usb and it worked great and at $99 it is well worth it. But if you plan on recording vocal and guitar you will need a XLR plug on your mic because it only has two inputs 1/4 and XLR.
Also you don't need a multichannel interface to record multiple tracks, only multiple tracks at the same time.
If your doing all the instruments yourself the fast track or fast track pro may be a good idea for now and then when you need it upgrade to a more expensive firewire interface.
And make sure whatever you get will work with your intel mac.
I just read some of the negative comments about the fast track usb. I don't think some of these people know what there doing. Comments like it only records on the left channel shows user error.

  • I'm having some Audio Issues involving my headphone jack (air and pro)?

Ok, so, this is pretty weird.
I have had two macbooks thus far (a 2011 macbook pro and a mid 2013 macbook air)
I replaced my pro in 2013 due to a separate issue.
Anyway, I have been consistently having an issue where any type of headphones I put into my computer eventually begin to lose sound in the left earphone - but still work fine on other devices.
I.e, I'll get a new set of headphones, use them for a week, and a week later, no sound will come from the left port - but only when using my air. It is most definitely not the headphones.
It's not the output balance - when I set the balance all the way to the left, no sound comes out, and the problem continually reoccurs with every new set of headphones I get - on TWO different computers.
The same issue happened on my pro, and happens in my air.
Am I like, inserting the headphone jack in "too roughly" or something? What's going on?

some headphone jacks arent the exact right length and the contacts miss
    1. diff headphones and same
    2. diff. audio , from Itunes, online etc, and still same
    3. youve checked balances.
    4. RESET NVRAM
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Why would the audio play through the headphones but not the speakers?

I am working on an app that has embedded video. The audio works fine through my speakers and headphones as it does for some of my coworkers, but I also have other coworkers who get audio through the headphones but not the speakers. It's a variety of devices, 4, 4S, and 5. Any thoughts?

If you are working on developing an app perhaps you should try the developers forum.

  • I have a new sound bar that I plug my phone into through the headphone jack. I also have a bluetooth speaker that I want to play through as well. Is there anyway I can play to both devices at once?

I have a speaker that I am connecting through my headphone jack but I have a bluetooth speaker in another room that I want to play through as well. Is there anyway I can play to both speakers at once? I saw another post on line that suggested going to the Audio MIDI setup and adding additional output devices. The problem is, I see that on my computer but nothing for my iphone. Can this work? I have also seen things for airplay and of course this is all making my mind fuzzy. Help!

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • Will iPhone 5 take line-level input via the headphone jack?

Is the headphone jack on the iPhone 5 a dual input/output jack...
and if so, does it expect Mic level, or will it take Line Level?

  • HT3215 Can I charge my apple Ipod touch 4th generation through the headphone jack

Stedman1 is right, can not be done. What made you think you could? Just curious.

  • Is there any way to keep the music playing through the headphones connected through the headphone jack, while also playing the music through a bluetooth device, such as speakers - so the audio is coming out of both devices simultaneously?

When I connect my bluetooth speakers, the sound stops coming out of the headphones (connected via the hardwire jack), and then comes back when I turn off the bluetooth speakers. I would like to have audio coming out of both...
    Anyone?

Thanks Kiwi. It doesn't make sense to me though, as that would seem to be only a simple change in the operating system, not a hardware 'necessity'.

  • Digital Audio Noise from the Headphone Jack

I have been searching for a while to see if anyone else has this problem.
I have random faint digital noise (bleeps, bloops, and whirls) from my headphone jack. This happens regardless of application. I can get it going good by just tossing the volume bar back and forth on the sound pref panel.
I have considerably less of this from the line out but still detectable noise.
I have disconnected everything non essential from the Mac Pro and my power outlet are reduced to a minimum. (monitor and Mac)
I have tried numerous headphones including Etymotic ER•6 and Sony MDR-7505.
This has always been present in 10.4.7 and 10.4.8. Like I said, its faint in volume - but it gets annoying!
I have read the following below and believe these do not apply to me because this is not an external powered device.

I found out today what is causing the noise on my Mac Pro!
Our next door neighbor has a really high power HAM radio that I am picking up static and transmissions from. I thought I was going insane when I heard weird voices coming out via my headphones. I know it is our neighbor because I heard him relay his name and location. Had to get my wife to listen to prove I was not going crazy.
Here is the weird thing. I do not have AirPort or BlueTooth on the MacPro...so I cannot figure out how the transmission is permeating the Mac. Could it be a shielding issue on some internal component?
    Thanks!

  • Iphone 4 with half a hole in the headphone Jack HELP

Hi I need some help i have a new iphone 4 that after 4 days i tried to plug in the headphones to discover they would not slide in all the way. I took to a apple distributor near home and they tested it and looked closer to find that there appeared to be something in the hole or the hole was half formed. My provider took the phone for repair/replace and now say i put something in the hole and will charge me to fix it.
Has amyone else ever had this problem as they are saying it has never happened before.

In UK by law you can just send back within 14 days with no charge except any calls made
May be different in your country
Still seems very strange- and your sure you dont have a headphone socket with a piece missing on end?
Dont do this but I may try getting a thin piece of plastic and putting a tiny bit of superglue on then press it onto this bit in hole then wait and then pull, only a suggestion...
