My IPhone 5 went through the washer machine

I was doing the laundry washing my bed sheets and other linens but I didn't know my IPhone 5 was among the bundle of items. After around 5 minutes, I realized the greatest mistake of my life and found my IPhone in the washer, at the bottom of the load, submerged in water. I took it out quickly and stupidly decided to see if charging it would turn it on. Obviously, that didn't work. Now, my phone is in a box of rice...what other actions should I take? How long should I keep the phone in the box of rice? Should I change the rice consistently? Thanks so much for the help!

There is nothing more you can do. I'd recommend leaving it there for 4-5 days at least. You don't need to keep changing the rice.
I also hope that it continues to be the biggest mistake you ever make in your life.
Best of luck.

Leave it in the rice for at least a day and change the rice every other day or so. The rice and iPod should be in a sealed container.

You may have to periodically change the rice.  Do not turn the iPod on or charge it until it is dry.

  • Is there any hope for a Nano 6th gen that went through the washing machine?

Is there any hope for a Nano 6th Gen that went through the washing machine?  All of the devices contents are showing up in iTunes when connected but the device itself is not working.

    Hello kpratta,
There is some hope. I have heard of someone putting the ipod in a bag of dry rice and putting the bag in a dark place for a 4-5 days. After that they used this:
    www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
This has the best chance. The rice absorbs any liquid in the ipod.
    Hope this helps.

  • My iphone went into the washing machine?

You can try letting it dry for a week or so and trying it again.

  • My iPod went through the washing machine.  Can it be saved?  What should I do?

My iPod went through the washing machine.  Can it be saved? What should I do?

When electronics get emersed in liquid, it's not the actual water that causes them to break (although if you spilled something like coke with a bunch of sugar, the sugar would stay in the device even after the liquid of the coke dissolved). What breaks the device is if either it was on when it was emersed in water, or if you turn it on before all the water can evaporate. If so, the water will conduct the electricity between the wires and short circuit the device. If you weren't thick enough to try and turn your device on immediately after you took it out of the washing machine, then it should be fine if you just let the water evaporate. Another technique (to make the water evaporate faster and, on rare occassions, to save a device if you've turned if on while there was still water in it) is to put the device in rice and let it sit overnight. Hope this helps.

  • Help, my sons iPod went through the washing machine

    What do we do?

Hey Bubbybalootoo, you can try the rice thing, but after going through a wash, don't expect much. (Just telling you up front-- so you don't get to excited). Leave it off, do not attempt to use or charge until you dry it out! Place the iPod in a sealed bag of uncooked rice for at least 10 days, (yes; a week and a half). Change the rice every couple of days. After 10 days attempt to turn it on, you may need to charge it. When you do attempt to charge watch the iPod closely, if you note is getting hot, or starts to make crackling sounds or starts to smoke or smell like something is burning UNPLUG IT IMMEDIATELY!! Means something has shorted out. If all appears to charge OK then charge it for 30 minutes keeping a close eye on it. Then attempt to turn on. You may need to Reset or Restore to new or try going into DFU recovery mode. And nothing may work, water is very for electronic devices, as you well know. This is a long shot, but for a couple of bucks of rice worth a try. If nothing works, contact Apple about purchasing an out of warranty refurbished iPod. Will be cheaper then buying new. Apple's warranty does not cover water damage, it is considered abusive use. If you attempted to turn on the iPod before drying it out, then the damage is definitely done, save your rice and buy a new iPod. Hope this helps, Good luck. Cheers.

  • IPhone went through the washer and is 90% ok

My Verizon iPhone spent an entire cycle in the washer. It is now completely fine, other than the fact the the HOME button doest not work. All other buttons are fine, it charges fine and the screen is unblemished. What are my options?? I live in a very rural are and do not have easy access to any Apple stores or authorized retailers.

It will be worth the trip, as it probably won't get better. It will just get worse as other bits corrode on the inside! Even if the trip is a bit long do it.

  • Help!  My iPhone just went through the washing machine!

I am at a complete loss... I don't know what to do other than get a new iPhone - it won't turn on... I'm trying to dry it out...

Whatever you do, do not power it on while it remains wet.
It must dry out naturally which can take a while - days or weeks and that includes placing the iPhone in a bag of uncooked rice or in a bag of silica gel packets during that time. Even with that, if the iPhone was powered on while being submerged in water, as you know moisture and electronics don't mix especially when completely submerged.

  • My iPhone went through the wash. It works but the display screen is still black.

My phone seems to work but the display screen is still black.

I'm sorry to hear that. If the display isn't working you can take the phone somewhere to see if they can fix the display.
I would honestly take it to Apple and get it swapped out for a new iPhone. It will cost you money because liquid damage is accidental so it wouldn't be a free switch out they would charge you for an out of warranty price. That is the best way. The only reason they switch out the iPhone is because liquid damage in unpredictable of what it damaged.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT201210 I have an iPhone that went through the wash...

Can somebody help me with this? My iPhone 4s went through the washing machine (full cycle) and I popped the back off and stuck it in rice for a few days, now it turned on but its just showing that I need to plug it into iTunes. I did that and it was trying to restore it but it wasn't working. I tried multiple times, but nothing. What should I do? I need this phone, badly.

Out of Warranty replacement for an iPhone 4S is $199 US, adjust
for your location. There is no magic cure - washing your iPhone
destroyed it, and it must now be replaced.

  • Can I sell an iPhone that has been through the washing machine?

I have a 16 month old iPhone 5S that went through the washing machine. Screen busted and now it doesn't work. I was wondering if it was still sellable. Meaning, is there anyone out there that would buy such a phone and be able to use the parts?
I'm not trying to dupe anyone, I'm going to be up front about the condition, but I wasn't sure if any part of the phone still had value in it's current state.
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, you can sell it as "for parts or not working" (that's what eBay would have you list it as). But you'd probably only get $10-$20 for it. Also, although it's not working, do as much of this as you can: What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.
