My Iphone 5 won't show up in itunes when i plug it into my windows 8 laptop but it shows up on my computer under devices and drivers as an iphone. Any idea on how to fix this problem so I can use my phone in itunes?

I tried to update the software for my iPhone 4S, 16 GB to the most recent version (8.1?). I don't know what I was updating from, because I can't access that, but it was whatever was installed on it (I got it about a year ago, so probably 6.something).
It froze, and now won't turn off, or on, or sync with my macbook plus, which is what I have always sync'd it to. (I backed it up and sync'd it right before I tried to update the software.)
Since it originally froze almost 3 hours ago, it shows a white screen with the apple on it and a line underneath. When I try to sync with my laptop, it says it needs me to enter a passcode on the phone, which I can't enter because the screen is frozen. So I'm unable to access the iPhone portion of iTunes.
I have tried to turn it off, with no luck. I have tried rebooting my laptop and syncing, but I still get the same result.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I really wanted to wait to update the software, but I was having internet connectivity issues for the past 3 weeks, and Sprint suggested updating the phone's software.

Itunes says that I have five computers authorized, but I have only done this for one computer. I want to authorize a new computer but it won't let me. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

I have one computer authorized to connect with my ipad and ipod. I would like to authorize my husband's computer to enable home sharing, but keep getting the error that I have five computers authorized. Not sure how this is possible. I'm tempted to try to deauthorize all computers and start over, but fear that this may create new problems. Any ideas on where the issue is?

Deauthorizing all is definitely the way to go. You will just need to authorize your computer again after, as well as your husband's.

Go to the settings in your Jeep, "forget" the iPhone. And on the iPhone "forget" the jeep. Then put the Jeep in Pairing Mode and tap Settings/BlueTooth on the phone and pair them anew (which sounds less confusing than "repair them").

On the new laptop, launch iTunes. From the menu bar click Store / Authorize This Computer.

Try holding the Capslock key with the letter you want to be capitalized. It should work.

When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now complete the OS X installation. At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer. Instead just shut it off. The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

update to latest OSX 10.9.3
reset SMC , you likely put your Air into sleep mode with phones attached.

If you are having multiple non-specific issues with your iPhone after a recent update, your best course of action may be to back up any of your content to iTunes, restore the phone to factory settings, then test to see if the issues persist in its default config before bringing back your content from the backup.
