My iPhone 5S is eating up my storage space.
It all started about a month ago (beginning of March), saying occasionally that my storage was almost full. I surely after the first few times tried to clear my messages and pictures, etc., but then the alerts kept becoming more and more frequent. it's gotten to the point where I have 6 photos on my phone, 2 apps, 1 message conversation, 3 emails, and 15 songs. I know for a fact that the few mega/kilabytes these take up are not using the 12.1 GB I have available on my phone. I'd say it adds up to a solid 7.5. I'm highly annoyed with this. not sure if I can get it fixed, since this phone has long passed its 1 year warranty. please help if anyone else has experienced this problem.

See if one of your apps, videos, photos or songs use up massive amounts of space. Spotify or Google Play use up massive amounts of space.
Also, this may be your iCloud space. Not your iPhone's internal space. Check in the usage section of settings.

Refurbished iPhone 5s (16Gb) says out of storage space when it shouldn't be out.
My sister recently got a refurbished 16 Gb iPhone 5s through AT&T. When I went to sync her data from her old iPhone 4 (16 Gb) it told me that there was not enough storage space on the phone. Because here old iPhone was never upgraded to iOS 7, I figured that the lack of room was associated with the larger operating system (I know a few people who had that issue last September). After skimming down her photos and music, I managed to sync the phone.
However, her phone displayed a message saying that it was low on storage space. I checked in the usage menu in the settings to see that there is 0 bytes available and 12.6 Gb used. Since I watched my sister remove half of her music library and 1,000 photos, I didn't believe that the storage could be completely out. After a quick tally of the apps in the usage menu, I estimate that just under 8 Gb of memory should be used.
I'm not sure if there is some other program or part of the OS that is using up the rest of the memory (seems unlikely) or is it possible that the issue is related to the fact that it is a refurbished phone. I would greatly appreciate any suggestoions or explanations as to why this happens.

What happens if you add, say a new pages document.
Hold down the alt key after opening the Finders 'Go" menu, choose 'Library' from the menu, look in 'Mobile Documents' and let me know what you see, you can look in various folders at will, but don't go moving or deleting anything. Look for any large unexplained documents. -

After the install it will replace your current iOS version and will take up no more storage than it is currently using.
As dilbert41 suggest, updating via iTunes downloads the update to your computer then installs it so the extra space, albeit temporary, is not an issue. -
Hello I purchased more cloud storage because I continued to receive messages saying I was out of storage. I can not take photos despite having only 20 pics on the device and not many apps. Everytime I have updated my phone in the past with the apple updates, my phone develops a new issue. I have a 4s. I need guidance on storage issue. If purchasing the additional cloud storage would not remedy the situation, how do I cancel the cloud purchase. I just purchased it yesterday and I have 15 days to request a full refund according to cloud.

Thanks for the question. It sounds like you may be running low on storage on your physical device, rather than in the cloud. Which means, purchasing an iCloud storage upgrade would not resolve this issue (as you have suspected). Are you sure your phone has not been unlocked or jailbroken at some time as the same thing happened to me.
I had the phone secondhand and did not know. Updating to IOS 5 locked the phone back to the original service provider which was AT&T in USA and I am in UK.

I have 900 photos on my iPhone currently, but iTunes reads it as 2000 photos eventhough I've already transferred and deleted my previous photos (w/c did amount to 2k before). It's eating up 4.91 GB of my storage, and I don't know how to set it right. I am trying to edit my music list and then sync it to my iPhone 5 so I don't run out of storage space. However, I see the check marks on the iTunes library but am unable to uncheck them? How do I manually edit what will be synced to my phone? (the check marks are not bolded, does this mean they are not in my library but only on my phone?)
You uncheck the music in your iTunes library on your computer and along with sync only checked songs and videos selected under the Summary selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, only checked songs in your iTunes library will be transferred to your iPhone or remain on your iPhone and the unchecked songs in your iTunes library that are currently on your iPhone will be removed when syncing.
Or make use of iTunes playlists and choose selected playlists, albums, artists under the Music selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and select the playlists below that you want transferred to your iPhone. -
