My iPhone 5S will put itself on mute, hold or speaker and also pulls up my contacts when I'm on the phone all after I updated to iOS 8.2...
after I updated to ios 8.2 it's hard to have a phone call without my phone pulling up my contacts or putting itself on speaker, mute or hold on it's own.
Looks like the proximity sensor is not working correctly. Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software.

Any update will cause problems for a few users. And those users will rush here and post "the sky is falling" stories about their experience. The 99.99% of people who have no problems after an update won't bother to post here; indeed, most of them don't even know ASC exists. FWIW, I had no problems with iOS 7 on my 4S. Your problem is most likely not related to iOS 6, but you should probably update anyway. You have already done some great troubleshooting on your own. The next step I would suggest would be restoring the iPhone. Please use the attached article to place the iPhone is a special status mode called recovery mode. Restore from recovery mode and test to see if the issue remains or is resolved.

Like everyone else today, I attempted to make the move to iOS 8, using my Mac's iTunes. All was running smoothly, the progress bar was nearing the end when I received the error that "the iPhone software update server could not be contacted." With a now useless phone, I restarted it, hoping for the best as I could do nothing. I am now stuck with a phone which will turn on to the white startup screen and black Apple Logo, then instantly shut down, leaving me to repeat the process. If I hold down the home button, I can enter what seems to be "Recovery Mode," with a red iTunes Logo, as opposed to the usual blue. From here, all internet sources I have found suggest that I should restore the phone, but that's really where I hit the problem. When I plug the phone in, when in Recovery Mode, I simply receive the "iPhone software update server could not be contacted" error again, leaving the phone not recognized by iTunes. In non-recovery mode, the phone appears to simply turn off so fast that iTunes has no time to find it.
Any one with similar problems or solutions?This what happened to my iPhone 5 after I updated to iOS 8.0;

Now when I cold start/boot my iPhone 5, my apple logo appears as it was
in iOS 7, but after 30 seconds or so, my Apple Logo dissappears the
screen goes black for 5-6 seconds, but then viola! I am at the Log-On
screen... Then I start using my iPhone.
Just like Chris above, I have done 10 reboots, (complete shut down and
restart), its always the same...
Other than this, my iPhone works just fine. I will not re-install the iOS.
From my past experience, re-installing the iOS does not change
these minor differences... -
My IPhone is set up with an internet downloaded firmware of ios7 because my phone would not restore, the system has failed and I had to do a manual erase fro within the phone. My computer will not accept the phone because they say it's a "Developer?" Help. I cannot not even get passed the activation step on the computer or phone because it will not activate the device.

My iphone 4s will not turn on, It was working properly and then I noticed the battery was at 1% I then proceeded to charge my phone like normal but nothing happened. The phone was unable to turn back on it's been two hours I already, tried to reset but nothing works. I tried different chargers, my ihome nothing is working.

The 8 pin Lightning connector can only output 720p and lacks all iPod Out functionality unlike the full iPod Out functionality and 1080p that the 30 pin connector has and I suspect that they are coding iOS 7 specifically for the new devices which have severely reduced abilities and perhaps skipping adding the code needed for 30 pin devices to use their functionality with HDMI, etc.

Yes, I have the option "NONE" on my phone but what happens is that I have the incoming text without any sound (selected in "none") but when I send a text, still happens! that annoying sound!

my iphone 4 is unlocked iv put an o2 sim card in and it now says carrier is o2 but no service the phones back is cracked and has a small dint in the botom corner could this have anything to do with it

I am having a lot of issues syncing anything to my iPhone 4, just after i updated to iOS 5.
So i updated to ios 5 and i was having issues with everything. my photos and contacts and everything synced alright, but none of my music worked. so i restored it back to just after i updated to ios 5, and my music and ringtones and everything was working. but now, when i try to apply the ringtones - and some of them are even purchased - it plays what the ringtone is, but it just stays as marimba. any other default ringtones work, but none of my custom ones. do i have to keep restoring my iphone every time i want anything on it? cuz im worried ill ruin all my progress if i restore it again. when will an update be out, or does anyone have a solution?

I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space.
I haven't done this with an external drive, but I would imagine it works the same way as if you have multiple internal drives. Also hopefully it works with less headache in OSX than in windows.
Anyway, move all your music over to your external, and then go into itunes -> preferences -> advanced -> iTunes media folder location. Navigate to your drive, and pick the folder you want. Ensure that your folders are set up like they are in your ~/Music/iTunes folder, or wherever your iTunes is currently pointing. Then quit and restart itunes. If your music doesn't show up, try dragging your music folder from your external onto itunes, and it will hopefully update your library.xml.
As far as Jerry's problem goes, you could try adding another music folder to your library.xml, but I really have no idea whether this will work or not. If you want to give it a try (can't promise you won't corrupt your library.xml, so make a copy beforehand) you can find the music folder xml element right near the top of the xml file (open it with textedit/textmate/whatever text editor you want (NOT WORD)). Curious to know if this works, and if it doesn't I have other ideas so let me know. -
The laptop I originally synch'd my iphone 4s with is broken and cannot retrieve any files. How can I sync the phone with a new laptop without losing all my downloaded music and apps already installed on my iphone?
If the answer to the above question is "yes", FIRST, set up a backup of your new computer before you do anything else so the next time your computer breaks you will not be in the same situation. Backup solutions are numerous and inexpensive, and there is absolutely no excuse in the Third Millennium not to have one.
