Make sure your iMac is on 10.6.8 or higher and your iTunes is up to date.  If it is, then restart your computer, open iTunes, then plug in your device.  If it still is not showing up, follow the steps listed here: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the general iTunes or iPhone forums.

  • I just used a firewire connection to transfer files from an older MAC to a newer MAC. My newer MAC has lost all that was on it, and all the applications are opening like they have never been used before and asking for Rosetta. Help!!!

I just used a firewire connection to transfer files from a PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has lost all that was on it, and all the applications are opening like they have never been used before and asking for Rosetta. How do I find all my files on the MacBook Pro, or undo what I have done???

IGNORE the last post: he thought you are using Lion or Mountain Lion.
Since you are using Snow Leopard, you need to install Rosetta.  It can be found on your Snow Leopard Install DVD in the Options section.
Once installed all should be well again.
Also, if your computer is connected to the internet when the Dialog Box about PowerPC applications comes up, it MIGHT allow you to download Rosetta from the internet.  There has been some discussion that Apple has discontined internet download of Rosetta into Snow Leopard.
Someone else will have to address your lost files problem.

  • How to transfer files from iMac to iPad 2

What's the best way to transfer files from iMac to iPad, like a Keynote presentation?

It's probably not as "simple" as using DropBox, but it's there. When in the Apps section of iTunes, just scroll down to the bottom where there is a listing of installed apps that can use the iTunes data exchange. Documents available on the computer can be synced TO the device while those available on the device can be syned TO the computer.

  • Can't transfer files from imac to intel imac via ethernet sockets

I recently bought the fab new imac intel and wanted to transfer files from my old imac 350 via the ethernet sockets as the old imac doesn't have firewire. I did this using instructions from an apple doc. which allowed me to simply drag files from the hard disk icon of my old imac, to the hard disk icon of the imac intel.
I now want to transfer some more files but the set-up just doesn't work. When I try to connect to the old imac the afp tries to find the IP but doesn't connect. Sometimes I get a message saying, 'the files you want are on this server' meaning the new intel imac, but of course they are not. I've tried all kinds of things but can't find the problem.
    Geoff

If the ip addresses are beginning with 169 that means they are self assigned ip addresses.
I suggest you goto each mac and create a new network location.
Then setup one mac as follows
    systempreferences-->network-->show built-in ethernet-->TCP/IP
    configure ipv4 manually
    ip address 10.0.0.1
    subnet 255.255.255.0
on the other mac do the same but make the ip address
    10.0.0.2
    press apply now.
Now when you connect to server use the ip address 10.0.0.1 or 10.0.0.2 respectively.

  • I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

Sure.. the PC connects by SMB.. the Mac connects by AFP or SMB..
But you can simply share SMB directly from the Mac.. there is no need to copy files through the TC. Go to system preference, sharing, and turn on SMB for the folder you want to share files to / from on the Mac.
Make sure you have a common username and password also helps.
If you have a TC already can you copy files to it via the windows machine??

  • How to transfer files from imac g4 to new imac i3

I'm going to pick up a new imac today. How do I transfer my files from my imac g4 running 10.2.8? I never upgraded from the original OS.
    I'll buy a FireWire 9pin/6pin cable too.
I only want to transfer files and preferences: photos, iTunes library, .doc's, .xls's, .ppt's, .jpg, .bmp, .gif, .tiff and my bookmarks.
    No applications.

Bummer. I'm not sure why this is happening. I don't think it has anything to do with the Firewire port you chose.
Two possible ways now to proceed: First is to skip Setup Assistant altogether. (And, I'm not even sure you will be presented with Setup Assistant again as an option, since it already appeared once.) Go through the entire setup procedure on the new Mac, including creating a new user (but it must have a name different from the G4 user; you will eventually delete this new user.)
Then, when the new Mac is up and running, connect the G4 again in FWTDM, wait until, hopefully, the G4 Volume appears on the Desktop of the new Mac, then open up Migration Assistant in Applications>Utilities and proceed with the transfer.
The other possibility -- and this depends on getting Setup Assistant again -- is to use the Flash drive, if it is big enough.  It will need to be formatted by Disk Utility. The formatting will be Mac OS Extended Journaled and the partition scheme (one partition) will be APM, Apple Partition Map. You will have to clone everything to the Flash drive (you could use Disk Utility Restore for this purpose, or Carbon Copy Cloner. You would connect the flash drive by Firewire (not target disk mode) and proceed with making your selections in Setup Assistant. (I have the feeling the first method will be simpler, though not as painless as I predicted earlier.)
    From Pondini
If you have any user accounts on the new Mac with the same name as any you want from the old ones, there's a conflict.  If you don't need any of the new account's data, create a temporary Admin user account, with a name different from any on your backups,  then log on with it and delete the conflicting account(s).  Then use Migration Assistant to transfer what you want and delete the temporary account.  If you do need some data from the new account, copy it elsewhere temporarily, then delete the new account via System Preferences > Accounts.  Alternatively, you can migrate the account, but rename it via Migration Assistant, then copy things from the other account.
Pretty much everything you need to know to go this route is explained in the pondini articles.
BTW, you really should have a backup, preferably a bootable clone on an external drive. Drives can die, or encounter problems at any time.
    I hope this now works!

  • I want to transfer files from my Mac Pro top Mac Air. i'M WRITING A BOOK SO I WANT TO MAKE SURE IT, WHICH IS ON PAGES, COMES ALONG AND IS IN TACT. iS THIS HARD TO DO FOR A SLIGHTLY ELDERLY PERSON WHO WANTS IT DONE RIGHT AND SO THAT I CAN GET TO WORK

I am buying an Apple Air and want to transfer files including a book I am writing on Pages.
I am not very tech savy. I have been told, however, by a number of friends I can save $1000 and do this myself.
I don't mind giving it a whirl, but i don';t want to loose anything in the transfer, And, I was hoping this was a fairly quick, fool-proof, process.
I have looked into this a bit and was wondering if I need two (2) Ethernet cables? That is,one from the Mac Pro to the Ethernet and one from the Apple Air to the Ethernet? Or, is it one just one cable to the Ethernet? And, if so, from the Apple Pro or the Apple Air to the Ehternet?
I'm assuming a dsiplay box appears on either or both of the notebooks? Perhaps prompting you to transfer everthing you have on the Apple Pro hard drive to the
the Apple Air hard drive? Or, to selection files? Dumb question: I assume my book, which is written on Pages is on The Apprle Pro hard drive? Correct? Or is it on a file folder separately?
I appreciate any feedback yuou may have.
Again, is it striaghtforward and easy to accomplish?
    Thanks,
    -Larry

    The following may help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872
Note that the MacBook Air does not have an ethernet port so you can either use wi-fi if you have that, or you can buy an ethernet adpater such as: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC704ZM/A/apple-usb-ethernet-adapter or you could use an external disk.
Also, if you took it to a local shop that specializes in Macs the cost shouldn't be anywhere near $1000 for them to assist. More like $100 and could even be free if they sell Macs and you buy the new one there.

  • I am trying to help my mother build her iTunes library.  I want to transfer files from my iTunes to hers.  I have tried HomeSharing, but the "Show/Import" menu buttons are nowhere to be seen on either of our computers.  We have PCs, not MacBooks.

I want to import some of my iTunes files to my mother's iTunes account so she doesn't have to pay again to get them.  We are going on a trip soon, and she wanted some movies to watch on here iPad.  Some of the movies, I already have.  I can't seem to do anything.  Homesharing has been useless, because while her iTunes can 'see' my iTunes and vice versa, the magic "Show" and more importantly the magic "Import" buttons are nowhere to be seen. How in the **** am I supposed to share my files if I can't import them to her library for her?  I have seen many solutions for people using iTunes on a MacBook, but we don't have MacBooks in our house.  I have a Samsung laptop and Mom has a Gateway laptop, and both operate on Windows 7.  Seriously.  This should not be impossible, but right now, it seems that way.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Will iTunes allow me to do this? I'm not really all that familiar with Windows computers. I have recently had to move to a PC because my $3000 macBook Pro died one month after the warranty was up. How could I get iTunes to accept media from another computer?

  • Transfer files from iMac 8.5 to iMac OS 10.5?

I have an old iMac running OS 8.5 -- first generation so no writable CD drive. I want to move files from the older computer to my newer iMac running OS 10.5.4. Sending the files via dial-up connection is agonizingly slow and cumbersome. I just tried and Ethernet connection (setting AppleTalk on the older iMac) but couldn't get it to work. Any suggestions for connection the two to transfer the files? Is it trying to connect the old iMac to a Windows PC?

    7.5.3 and later File Sharing
Any Mac running 7.5.3 or later can share the files of any Mac running OS 9 or later using built-in File Sharing using IP. What is not supported beyond 10.3 is File Sharing via AppleTalk. In addition, Sharing initiated from your 10.4 or later Mac to a Mac before OS 9 is not supported directly. So you will have to make the connection from the Older Mac end. Alternatively, you could install "Shareway IP" (a low-cost utility) on the older Mac and connect from the newer Mac.
You need an appropriate Ethernet connection, and each Mac must have a similar (but not identical) IP Address. On the 10.4 or later Mac: You must turn on File Sharing in your 10.4 Mac:
System Preferences > Sharing > Services pane > \[X] Personal File Sharing
    and click ( Start )
Look up the 10.4 or later Mac's IPv4 Address in System Profiler OR Network Preferences, and write it down for later. It may resemble 192.168.0.6
On the Older Mac: open the Chooser and select AppleShare. Your 10.4 or later Mac will NOT appear in the right-hand pane, because it does not speak AppleTalk File Sharing protocol. But do not despair!
It can speak IP protocol, if you ask it nicely. So click on the "Server IP Address" button on the bottom of the right pane, and enter the IPv4 Address of the 10.4 or later Mac.
The login screen that appears is sent to you from the 10.4 or later Mac. Enter a Username and password that is valid on the 10.4 or later Mac. Choose the drive(s) you want to mount, if there is a choice, and they will appear on the desktop of the Older Mac as shared Network Drives (Drive Icon with a cable coming out the bottom).
Drag whatever you like to the newly-mounted drive. It will appear on the 10.4 or later Mac. Try to resist the temptation to drag your whole drive all at once. Move smaller batches in a thoughtful way, and you should have no problems.
