My iphone is stuck in recovery mode while doing an automatic upgrade last night. I can't do anything with the phone and now it won't even restore! Help!

Last night my iphone did an automatic upgrade and when I got up this morning all that was there was the picture of the usb cord and itunes.  When I plugged my phone into my computer and open itunes I got this message: iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.
I spent literally all day trying to figure out what to do and finally sucked it up and pushed the restore button in itunes.  I'm not getting this message: The iPhone could not be restored. The device isn't eligible for the requested build.
What the heck do I need to do in order to have a functioning phone again?!

Errors 3000-3999 (3004, 3013, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com) on ports 80 or 443.
Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
An entry in your hosts file may be redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com" above).
Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.

I recently when to England.  When I returned to the US, my iPhone 5 wouldn't find the 4G network.  I've tried restoring network settings, I've tried hard resets.  I finally wiped the phone, and now, it won't let me restore anything.  I'm kind of stuck - this is both my personal and my work phone, so I'm really in a bother here.  Help!

  • IPhone 3GS stuck in recovery mode while updating to iOS 6.1

Hello there, I was updating my iPhone 3GS(New Bootrom) from iOS6.0 to iOS 6.1. While it was updating, iTunes suddenly ends up saying error and now my iPhone is stuck in recovery mode loop. I've tried DFU mode on my iPhone and try to kick it out by using TinyUmbrella but the computer doesn't reconize it. And when it was on recovery, iTunes doesn't reconize too, a window pops up and says i have to install 'Apple Mobile Device'. I've re-install and install iTunes a couple of times and nothing is working. Switching on and off the iPhone doesn't work too. Please, someone help me with this problem! I really do not know what to do! Please reply this As Soon As Possible!

Ok. I have spent the last 8 hours researching this problem and have the absolute 110% answer to everyone's problem with this issue.
Error 13 and 14 : Are checksum problems with the firmware image that is in the update package.
The update package is a .ipsw (IPod or IPhone SoftWare). This file is actually just a .zip renamed .ipsw.
The error is caused by a failure to download a crc-free version of the file. Not really sure why there are so many crc problems with the iphone updates, but Apple does not check the integrity of the update package before wiping your current version of IPhone software and that is why all IPhones that start an update with a bad update package end up in recovery mode. These errors are NOT related to the iTunes installation, antivirus software, or firewalls.
Recommendation : use a program like "Object Fix" (Freeware) to verify the integrity of the file prior to commencing with any new updates. You will have to keep trying to download it until you get a error free file. Once you have a CRC error free file this problem will go away. (I thought TCP/IP helped get rid of CRC errors.)
I had another problem and that was...
Error 1603 and 1604 : These are USB driver connectivity problems.
Recommendation : FULLY uninstall and re-install itunes software as stated in the Apple support documentation. Be sure to reboot between each step and these problems should clear themselves up. In addition, firewalls and anti-virus software may cause these errors as well.
Finally, shame on apple for not properly documenting their software so that end users do not have to decrypt their error messages with no true support to solve the issues. These are problems that enough people have had that there should be specific documentation on these problems.

  • IPhone 5 stuck in recovery mode while upgrading

While upgrading my iPhone 5 to ios 8.0.2, my phone got stuck in recovery mode. Tried with iTunes and it says it is still in recovery mode. First complete it and then connect with iTunes. Finally got Error message 3194. I am using latest iTunes. Phone is stuck with iTunes and connector symbol on the screen.

Me too. I now have to restore my entire phone and lost a whole bunch of info. So angry with Apple lately.
As an owner of all Apple products for computing and mobile since the 90's, I am starting to think about moving to Samsung phones. Apple is lacking in innovation and their products (and software) aren't the same quality. So sad.

  • IPhone is stuck in recovery mode after I tried to update it. What can I do?

I tried to update to iOS 4.3, It seemed to be working fine until it displayed this error notification - http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblrlhuulwwGjV1qbpguwo1500.png My phone is now stuck in recovery mode and I cannot restore it, I can only "restore and update" and its the update which isn't working.
Someone told me to download 4.2 online and restore it, I have downloaded it but I don't know how I can install it back on my phone
Please can anyone help? this is urgent!

This reply isn't to shorty2006, that post was awhile ago. This is for everyone that updates itunes and gets an error that their phone is now in Recovery mode.
I've been researching all night and even thought about downloading several different things that were suppose to get my phone out of "Recovery" mode.  Then I thought about taking my phone to the Apple store after work tomorrow.  I then found this blog and read coltonkj's entry and tada!  I took a big breath and hit "restore".  It worked, it put me back to the page where you can select to restore the last back-up.  Shooooo!!!!

  • IPhone 4S stuck in recovery mode while trying to upgrade to iOS 7.0.4

I ran into the issues with my iPhone 4S while trying to upgrade it it iOS 7.0.4 OTA and I have tried everything I can to recover it but no luck. I have tried different USB ports, different PCs altogether with av tuned off, and finally a MAC Pro this morning. I am stuck and miserable. I did everything that a number of forums have mentioned in terms of switching off anti-virus, clearing off host files, checking windows and mac firewall settings, setting the phone to DFU mode and trying over - you name it.
The error I run into most half way through the upgrade is "Unknown Error (29)". According to Apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694), it has to do with anti-virus but last night I spent 2 hours building an image with no av or firewall running and tried and still ran into the error. Even tried "Fix it" from Microsoft to clear off the host file configurations as prescribed.
Any help is welcome. Much needed.

Hi, sorry for my late reply.
FIXED!!!! For me anyway, and I hope for you!
So I tried to update to ios 7 and after downloading the software itunes tried to update my iPad 3. I recieved the error 3004 and was stuck in the "Connect to iTunes" screen and
could not get out of it. Completely annoyed!
But then I remembered something from when I used to fiddle with iphones. I opened a program I had called TinyUmbrella, which can be used to force boot out of recovery mode (the
    "connect to itunes" screen).
My ipad was still connected to itunes and in recovery mode. I opened TinyUmbrella, selected my ipad (which was just shown by the serial number), then clicked "Exit Recovery" and
BAM!!! It immediately kicked my out of the recovery screen and started my ipad back up to my home screen.
Now, my ipad was still on 6.1.3 since the update to ios 7 had failed. But I didn't care, my ipad was fully functional again just like I left it before. Thank God for
TinyUmbrella! Here's the CNET link for TinyUmbrella if you need it:

If you didn't want to lose stuff on your iPhone, then you should have been making regular backups to iCloud or iTunes.  Both are free services.  There is really no excuse, other than ignorance or apathy.  If you chose not to back up your data, then you're now facing the consequence of that choice.  Life lessons are hard.
Your device is in recovery mode.  You can try turning it off then back on again, which might clear out recovery mode (unlikely).  If it doesn't, then you'll have to use this article: [If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support]
How did it get into recovery mode in the first place?

  • Iphone 4 stuck on Recovery Mode While updating Software?!?!

I started to update my iphone 4 from ios 7 to ios 7.0.3 without plugging it in to my computer. A message poped up that said "verifying update", then the screen went blanc as if it were restarting. The apple logo came up for asecond, and then went into recovery mode. I tried to hard restart it but that didnt work. I havent bcked up my Iphone in almost a month, so I really dont want to have to reset it. Any advice would be AMAZING. Thanks!

Sometimes things go wrong during an update. It's impossible to say what happened at this point.
You can avoid data loss in the future by backing up on a regular basis. As has already been pointed out, iCloud backups are automatic. They require absolutely no user intervention after they are turned on.

  • My iphone 3gs is stuck at recovery mode while updating software 4.3.3

my iphone 3gs is stuck at recovery mode while updating software 4.3.3 and even itunes is not responding . and i m using newest software of itunes on mac. please help.

If you followed all of the steps within that article then it's almost always a hardware issue. Reason being is that if you attempted restoring the iPhone from another computer (as the article informs you to), and you are still stuck in recovery mode, it proves that it is not a problem with the iTunes installation on your computer.

  • IPhone 3gs stuck in recovery mode, firmware iO 5

My iPhone is stuck in recovery mode. I have a 3gs, firmware 5.0.
Before I tried to restore it, my iPhone would randomly shut off, turn back on, and display a notification that said "Activation Required." Now, sometimes my phone would shut off again and return to it's previous working state. However, this time it did not. I put the phone into recovery mode and tried restoring it on my Acer Aspire 1 with Windows 7. iTunes put the phone through the various stages of restoration; Extracting Software, Preparing iPhone for Restore, Restoring Software, Verifying Restore, Restoring Firmware. After all of this, a nice little error message pops up that reads, "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (1)."
After this little mishap occured four more times, I decided to click "More Information," and was promptly brought to the help page set up here. I proceeded to troubleshoot by updating to the latest version of iTunes, updating my security, restarting my computer, and so forth until all the necessary precautions were performed. Now it was back to iTunes to try my luck at getting my life back.
To my delight, I found that this time the restoration process took upwards of forty minutes to complete. However, to my despair, a nice little error message popped up that read, "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (-1)." Ah, a different error message! i thought, feeling as if there was hope in fixing my phone. I clicked "More Information" and skimmed through the specific error messages, looking for that lucky -1. Nothing.
I need help. I have attempted to restore my phone a dozen times since this occurence, and I'm growing tired of going through the same process over and over and getting the same result. My phone is stuck in recovery mode now. I've tried restoring the phone on 2 different computers, to find out if, in fact, the problem was my iPhone and not my computer.
Some important information you may need to know in order to help me solve my problem:
    iPhone 3gs
    Running iOS 5.0
    Using iTunes 10.5
On an Acer Aspire One Netbook
    Running Windows 7
All security updates installed as of November 7, 2011
Also iTunes 10.5 on Acer Aspire 57354774 laptop
    Running Windows 7
Reply ASAP with a solution please!

I have an iPhone 3GS which I updated with the last firmware (iOS 5) 2 weeks ago. Everything goes ok.
And suddenly, while the phone was recharching. It asked me to activate it but I was unable to do it as it was rebooting constantly every time I connected it to iTunes.
I tried both 2 restore modes (Restore and DFU) but since I can't achieve a restore with the last Apple iOS 5 firmware. I got the error code 1.
I I tried on 3 different computers but same error. I really don't know what to do next...

Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. Also, discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps under Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations. If you do not want to remove the IPSW in the original user, try restoring in a new administrator user. If the issue remains, Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.

This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

Note: If your device is working on its own and is not in recovery mode, this set of steps is not for you; do not manually place the device into recovery mode.
Your device may not be recognized while in recovery mode. This can happen during an update or restore of your device. Typically when your device is in recovery mode, it will show the "Connect to iTunes" logo on its display. If iTunes does not recognize the device when in this state, try the following:
    Open the Device Manager:
Windows XP: Click Start > Run. In the resulting dialog, type devmgmt.msc and press Return.
Windows Vista or Windows 7: Click Start. In the dialog, type devmgmt.msc and press Return on the keyboard. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click "Continue".
Windows 8: Move the cursor to the upper right corner, click the magnifying glass, type devmgmt.msc, and press Return.
Click the plus icon (Windows XP and Vista) or the disclosure triangle () (for Windows 7 and 8) next to Imaging Devices, Other Devices, Portable Devices, and Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand these sections.
Check these sections for one or more entries called Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode). These entries may or may not have exclamation marks on them similar to the following:

  • My iPhone is stuck in recovery mode showing error 4013 any ideas?

My iphone is stuck  in recovery mode.  It is showing error 4013.  Has anyone got any ideas on what to do next.  The 02 shop has said it is a hardware problem, but the phone has not been damaged in any way.

    Did you try these suggestions?
    Check USB connections
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, thentroubleshooting your security software.
    Common errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response”, and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you see your error after changing your USB connections, continue to the next section to troubleshoot your hardware.
    Check for hardware issues
Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the alert when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
