Assuming the phone isn't jailbroken, the basic steps (as needed) are:
Restart phone (you already did this)
Reset phone
Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup

If your phone is jailbroken, this is the most frequent cause of the problems you described. Restoring could permanently brick the phone.
Note that your iOS is old and the current version is 4.2.8. It's odd that it wasn't updated when your activated your phone in iTunes, being that you got it last Friday.

My iPhone 4 just automatically shut off and now will not turn back on. I have tried plugging it to the wall and into my laptop but nothing is working.

Connect iPhone to the Wall Charger for 10 minutes, it may turn ON itself. If still nothing, keep on charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons for about 20 seconds until the iPhone begins to start.

After upgrading to mavericks my mac shut off and won't come back on

I upgraded to Mavericks and my 2013 macbook pro shut off and won't come back on. When I push the start button I can hear the chime and then my sleep light blinks really fast and then shuts off completely. Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.

Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

For the last few weeks my iphone 5 has been randomly shutting off. Usually when this happens I just hold down the power and home buttons and my phone reboots within a few seconds. However last night my phone shut off and will not turn back on no matter what I try. It doesn't respond at all when I plug it into the charger and the screen has been completely black the whole time. When I plug it into my computer Itunes starts up and a message pops up saying that Itunes has detected a phone in recovery mode and I must restore it before it can be used with Itunes. I tried to restore my phone earlier, but it got stuck on 'waiting for itunes' and my phone displayed the apple logo and status bar that would not load at all. My phone is now back to being completely black and unresponsive. PLEASE HELP this phone isn't even 6 months old. I am on vacation currently and really need to get my phone working as soon as possible. Thanks!

it actually brought my phone to life .. sort of .. I now actually see an Apple logo on the iPhone screen (before this it was just a black screen at all times, no matter what) and it has a progress bar under it. Only thing is nothing happens after this. It's just stationary.
My iTunes just says Waiting for iPhone while my iPhone is just stuck with an Apple logo and a loading bar below that doesn't progress.

My iPhone was charging when it shut off, i locked it and walked away from my phone for a few seconds and when I came back to unlock it, it was completely unresponcive. You can try and let the phone sit for a period and then try connecting it again to the power source. If that doesn't work, I cannot think of another solution. The only way to reset the phone in a case such as this is to old the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. However, since you say the sleep/wake button doesn't work, then there is no alternative. I'm puzzled though when you say that you locked the phone and walked away. If the lock button doesn't work, how did you do that?

IPhone appeared to not be charging, then shut off and won't come back on.

Please, anyone??? I had my phone plugged into the car charger that came with my phone. Suddenly the phone appeared to not be charging. It finally went dead. Even though now it has been plugged up to the house USB cable for over 3 hours it doesn't make the sound like it is charging when I connect it, it doesn't show the charging screen. And I can't power it back on. Even by holding the home button and the top button at the same times it won't reset or anything!!!! Has anyone else had this issue and is there a cure????? HELP!!!!

Today was in an apple store - they checked it and found that charge in battery was too low. They replaced it immediately and - lucky me - there was still a warranty (only 17 days left). The replaced iPhone has warranty of 90 days.
There seems to be no other solution.

This is very bad. It is very difficult to deal with problems without power button function. If there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up service and take or send to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, clean iPhone charging port very well with toothbrush and Isopropyl Alcohol. If still nothing, next would be battery replacement. If still nothing, replacement of the charging port with flex cable and lower mic. And on and on. If you want Apple to handle this, they offer perfect replacement iPhone 4S for $199.
