It appears like there is maintenance or something affecting the iTunes server today. I recommend giving it a few hours and trying again. It shouldn't take that long to restore but from what I hear, there is definitely something going on with the iTunes server today.

Yes, you need iTunes installed in order to restore your phone. If not installed on your computer, you need to download/install it.

If the phone is actually working you can reset it fron the handset, but yours does not appear to be working. Be sure you are using a good cable and the cable is connected directly to a USB port on the computer (not a hub). Follow the instructions carefully in that link; the computer will not recognize the phone until it is in Recovery mode, and it's complicated to get it there. If you have followed the instructions exactly and it still is not recognized in iTunes. try removing and reinstalling iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925. If that still fails try a different computer, and also try restoring from DFU mode (Google is your friend).

when i follow the steps it does it but when it gets to itunes it says 'iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet' but i am connected to the internet ..?
Were you definitely connected to the internet at the time? If you don't have iOS 5 on your iPhone then the only way to update it would be via iTunes, once updated to the latest version of iOS you'll be able to update your iPhone without connecting to iTunes "over-the-air".
Before updating however it goes without saying to Backup your iPhone, this should happen by default upon connecting your iPhone to iTunes.

I have problem with my iphone as it is disable and need to get all my data as the phone needs at least 40 years to enable accessing it
If you have never connected the phone to iTunes and backed it up or used iCloud to backup your data, it is lost at this point.
The only way to get back into the phone is to restore it.

I have an Iphone 4 using ios 4.2.6 and need to upgrade to at least ios 4.3 or better yet ios 5. I have never received any update notices. I understand upgrades are through Itunes but when I go to Itunes downloads there is nothing there. Help!
Thanks, I tried this and it didn't work. I have a windows xp computer and connected the iphone to it. When I click on the iphone link that comes up under my computer i only get my iphone photos. No other options come up.

I just bought a Mac Book Pro and the Appstore show one upgrade of iPhoto (9.2.1). I started a section with my Apple ID (the account that I have I use to iTunes) but when I try to update it says that there are upgrades available for other accounts and that I have to upgrade using the account that I used to buy iPhoto. How do you retrieve a password when your Ipod say's connect to ITunes, but when you go on ITunes it says to unlock password?

Hold Sleep and Home buttons for 10 seconds until the device restarts to perform a reset, so you will be able to use your device again -

I just changed my Apple ID and I verified it but when I try to login it says my Apple ID is not verified. Now I can't access my iTunes account at all. How can I fix this?
You need to click the link in the e-mail you received to verify.
Then you need to link the valid credit card info to your Apple ID if you want to download anything from Apple Store (iTunes, Apps and iBooks).
