If the phone is turned off, doesn't have an internet connection, or has been restored preventing "Find my iPhone" from being able to work, there is no other way to track it.

Once the device is gone it is too late to protect yourself.
Hopefully your device was setup to auto-lock and had a passcode, otherwise all data is accessible to anyone that picks it up.
Frankly, the most likely scenario is that the device has already been restored as new and is or has been sold for quick cash.

The processor and several other components are fixed to the logic board;
so there is no upgrade path by parts swapping, and more than just the CPU
would likely require replacement to support any 'upgrade' by soldering iron.
The best upgrade is to look for a clean and good condition later model Mac.
Since I'm in the far northwest North America continent, my reference to any
thing in the UK regarding Macs and parts is outdated. Maybe klaus1 knows?
Other than upgrading the RAM to full supported capacity, and then consider
a solid-state drive, (SSD) upgrade, there isn't much else to do for it. Take
a look into OWC macsales SSD product information online.
Hopefully you can update or upgrade...

Eacb night I woulc close all open apps by clicking on the home button twice and all open apps appear. With the update this is not happening. Is thre anothr way to close all apps with the new IOS?

You can go to settings, general, restrictions, and then enable the restrictions. You can then choose what you want visible on your home screen. To bring back what you've restricted, simply go back to settings, disable the restriction, and it'll be regular again.

Have your GF launch the Find My Phone app, login with your ID & password. If online, it should be located.
This assumes that Find My Phone was setup/activated, on your phone, & is still turned on. Also, your phone must be connected to the Internet & have power.
