My iPhoto '11 won't open.
My iPhoto '11 won't open even after I've intalled updates and reinstalled the application. Any other suggestions?
First iPhoto_Pref_and_Cache make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Next, if needed, Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

The iPhoto Library Upgrader tool doesn't work. I've downloaded it, and follow the directions, but iPhoto still won't open.
Your Library is damaged.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
As for goign back: do you have an undamaged library?

IPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version
I have an early 2009 mac pro desktop with 6 megs of ram. iPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version to work but the most recent version won't work either because I have Mountain Lion. I downloaded iPhoto from the App store and the store said "you can't download the most recent version because you don't have Mavericks - would you like to download an older version?" So I said yes and downloaded it. It is actually the Mavericks version that downloads anyway. So I used an older version from my other computer and updated it to version 9.4.3. When I try to open it it says you need the most recent version. My library is on an external drive which was downgraded from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion because Mavericks wouldn't work properly on my computer. Now no version will open.
What can I do? Thank you for your help in advance. The exact error message is:
THe library "iPhoto Library" cannot be opened. To open it, you must upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto. Then the Quit button is at the bottom of the dialog box.
I did install iPhoto 9.5 when I installed Mavericks, Keep in mind that all of my photos are not on the boot drive but they are on an external drive. I then got rid of Mavericks and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion then I copied the contents of a previous drive that only had Mountain Lion on it. 9.5 wouldn't open in Mountain Lion so I copied an older version from another computer and updated it to 9.4.3. 9.4.3 says you must upgrade to the latest version and 9.5 says you need an older version. So I am stuck now. -
Fresh install of iPhoto 11 won't open - say's it needs update.
Hi,
I need some help here. I just re-installed my MBP (mid 2010) with OSX Lion, got all updates. After that i installed my iLife 2011 software bundel, and got every update downloaded and installed. Rebootet and then tried to start iPhoto (for the first time since my re-install). Now it says: "In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the lastest version." Problem is, that i allready did this before i tried to start iPhoto - So i'm stuck. iPhoto has been installed from the iLife 2011 bundel DVD, and not from the App Store.
Hope some of you can help me. I have searched the discussion forum, and i all i find is some guides aboout deleting som cache files, but these does not exsist on my mac, because iPhoto has never beed opened.
Ps. I made a backup of my iPhoto library, before i did the Lion reinstall - so nothing is lost.
(sorry for my bad english, i'm from Denmark )
Thank you in advance.Hi,
I had the same happen to me, i updated with an ilife11 dvd, iphoto now won't open says i need to do the software update but everything is up to date when i run the update. I tried to do the steps you suggested above, but i can't 'get info' on iphoto to see what version i have, when i try to click the icon the same little box pops up saying i need to update to latest version, run software update now to install. I did try searching another way and it looks like i have iphoto 9.0 on Mac and last modified last night when i did what i thought was an ugrade. i was under the impression i was upgrading my current iphoto 9 to iphoto 11 when i did the ilife dvd. (im computer illiterate) anyhow i can't open iphoto now and im wondering if i've just lost all my pictures that i've never backed up, at this point i could care less about upgrading to the newest app, i just want all my photos back. Do you think i should put the dvd back in and try it again or will that just mess everything up now (new apps and other updates that came on that dvd seem fine when i open them)
I'm using a Mac OS X version 10.6.8 -
I have iPhoto 7.1 that shows up in my applications folder. Apparently, I upgraded to iPhoto 9.3 according to the App Store but it does not show up on my computer, When I try to install 9.3, it says I need 9.1.
My real problem is that the Library has been upgraded to 9.3 so the 7.1 version won't open it.
So I either have to find a way to install 9.3 or a way to move my library back to work with 7.1
I have installed OS 10.9 (Maverick)
I have the iMac 27 inch with 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 and 12 GB memory
HELP
Thanks
KevinTerence
It says in bold:
You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
Under that it says:
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.
My problem is that I cannot find my latest version of iPhoto on the computer though the App Store says that it is installed

My iPhoto library on my new Macbook Pro suddenly won't open. When I open up iPhoto, it now takes me to a screen that says "which photo library do you want iPhoto to use". There are no options. I then click on "other library", and I can see my iPhoto library. It is 53GB large.... But when I select it and click open, nothing happens....it won't open. It was working fine last time I used my computer! Any thoughts?
iphoto version 9.5.1

HI all, after a recent synching with an iphone my iphoto won't open for me, it's still on my dash but won't open. When I hold right click it appears from the lower right screen, but when I move my arrow over it a blue highlight surrounds the window, and when I click on it it disappears under the right dash again. Help!
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
*What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

IPhoto 9 won't open after update
Hi,
I have bought iLife 11 and have been using it for a couple of weeks on my MacBook Pro. Today i did quite a big update to OSX, it was about 850mb download in total. After I completed the update iPhoto won't open. It just shows a dialogue box saying:
"In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the latest version. Please run Software Update to install it now."
I check the software update and there is nothing to update. Looking in the console there is this line:
<Notice>: Application failed to launch (id = com.apple.iPhoto, version = 9.0 reason = kLSIncompatibleApplicationVersionErr)
I have downloaded version 9.1 and tried to update manually, but it says there is no installation of iphoto to update. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.
TIA,
JonHi Terence,
Thanks for the reply. I've also had some help from the in-law (an Apple guru!) we've worked it out and it was to do with the application location.
I reset the Disk Permissions for the HD. Then checked Software Update again and still no update for iphoto. I manually downloaded 9.1 from Apples site, but it said it couldn't find iPhoto
I then moved the application file from a folder called PHOTO in the Application folder (trying to keep all the apps organised!) and re-ran manual 9.1 update. This then found the current installation and updated fine.
iPhoto 9.1 now opens just dandy and I am very relieved. I'm now off to run TimeMachine again, now it works!
Kudos to you though Terence, you were spot on! -
We have two different login names on our iMac and both of them have iPhoto on them. iPhoto will open on one of the logins, but on my login it simply won't open. When I click on the iPhoto icon a bold question mark appears on the icon and nothing will come up. I've tried to download newer versions of iPhoto since the time I found out it doesn't work. However, whenever I try to download them, the computer sends me a message that either says "newer versions of iPhoto are already downloaded" or "there are no applications already existing". Those messages are rather contradicting, and I have no idea how to solve my problem. I had a lot of photos on iPhoto, and I can't find some of them since it hasn't worked. There are still a few that I have left, and i have to open them with the Preview program which has no features other than rotating the picture. I would really like to find my missing photos and be able to use iPhoto again...please help me!
iMacThanks for your help, I found my missing pictures in the iPhoto Library folder. Although I still can't get iPhoto to work. I went to the Applications folder to try to open iPhoto, but there isn't an icon for it in there. When I click on the icon on the dock and tell it to show in the Finder, nothing happens. Finder doesn't even open.
I do have an iPhoto library in my Pictures folder, so I did get all of my pictures back. I did get one hit when I searched for iPhoto.db and it is located in the iPhoto Library, which is in located in the Pictures folder. I can't open this file though because, "There is no default application specified to open the docment 'iPhoto.db'." I am able to pick an application to open it, but even so I don't know which one is best.
And one last thing, I haven't ever changed my short user name.
Thanks a lot for your help! -
IPhoto/iMovie won't open - exc_breakpoint (SIGTRAP)
Hi all,
iMac G5, running OSX Leopard
iPhoto and iMovie have stopped working and won't open. This occurred after an attempt to transfer files from a laptop across the the G5.
I have deleted the iLife suite and reloaded iLife08 which is what was on the G5, but the programs will still not open. Any suggestions?

As a data point, I just ran a heap of updates on my system through Software Update before iPhoto broke. One of these, iMovie, promised (and delivered) faster launches for users with very large iPhoto libraries (like myself). I did not update iPhoto yesterday, but I'll bet this problem is related to that iMovie fix.
I'll let you know if reinstalling the system works. That seems like a mighty big hammer to swing at this problem. -

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List. -
When trying to open iphoto, it won't open.
It says "Caution. The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." I click ok, and then, it won't open.
What version of iPhoto?
Assuming 09 or later:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
