My iphoto deleted all my pictures. How do I restore them?

I was working on my computer and tried to drag a photo into my iphoto and it said application could not be launched. I woke up the next day and restarted my computer and all my photos had been deleted? Is there a way to restore them?

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
- Did it ever work properly?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.

found the photos in the pictures folder (although anonymously as jpegs, have to open them to identify them) but how do i return them to iphoto? and why are the other 5000 photos still visible in iphoto?
when i open the package contents in the iphoto library on the external hard drive there is a folder called originals which has all the photos in, but iphoto seems not to be pointing to it. hard to explain what i mean but basically the photos exist, i photo library doesnt see them, the other iphoto library on the computer that came with the upgraded version is fine.

It sounds like she deleted them all from your icloud account. If you have an iTunes backup, try this to possible recover your deleted contacts. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4108
If that doesn't work, you might be stuck as Apple doesn't usually have a backup plan for intentional user deletion. You can try to call Apple though and see if there is anything else they can do to try and recover that deleted info for you.

As long as the apps are still available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, then you should be able to re-download them for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 . If you download them to your computer's iTunes you could then try restoring to your backup and see if that restores them and their settings/content back to your iPhone - a backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content/settings, so for the restore to work fully iTunes needs access to the apps so that it can restore them.

If you don't have a backup the only way is through relatively expensive recovery software. If you want to do that, stop using the computer immediately before the data is overwritten.

No, updating does not. Within your pictures folder in your user folder, is there an iPhoto Library file? If so, is it large? If it is, your pictures are still there. Try starting iPhoto while holding option and command, this will rebuild your library. If they are not in there, go to a recent backup or TimeMachine and restore the pictures to the folder.

Hello, I just upgraded my computer to Maverick and now iPhoto isnt working and says I need to upload.
Probably the error message was to "upgrade" and not upload, right? Older versions of iPhoto are not compatible with Mavericks, and because your iPhoto library has been created by an earlier version of iPhoto, it needs to be upgraded to a new format, so iPhoto '11 can open it.
Your photos are stored in the iPhoto library and not in the iPhoto application, so upgrading to the new iPhoto version will not delete your photos. But as a precaution make a backup copy of your iPhoto library, before you let the new iPhoto upgrade it, this is best practice when upgrading software - just in case, so you can revert to the previous version if need be.
What is the iPhoto version you are upgrading from? If it is iPhoto '07 or earlier, you need to run iPhoto Library upgrader first, before you can open the library in iPhoto '11, see this document:

Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If that fails continue with:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Do the following on your library:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

HT201317 icloud has deleted all my photos - how do I get them back

I started an iCloud account last night as I wanted to be able to get videos off my phone and share them.
This evening when I checked my photo gallery on my iphone all the photos I'd taken over the last 2 and a half years on my iphone had disappeared. Instead my photo library now seems to be populated by photos I've taken on my digital camera.
itunes says my phone was last backed up to the iCloud this evening so I'm worried that all my photos have disappeared.
This is extremely frustrating. iPhone and apple don't make it easy to get your content off the phone (for instance there doesn't seem to be a way to get photos off the phone without iphoto and I can't get it on my operating system).
Is there any way to get my photos and videos back?

I downloaded an update for my iphone, I thought I backed up my phone, but I guess I may have done it wrong because when the download was complete, all my apps, music and ALL MY CONTACTS WERE GONE!! The iphone stores nothing at all to the SIM. There were never any contacts on your SIM.
The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer regularly. You should have been sync the contacts to your computer (Outlook/Address Book) from the very beginning. If you have failed to do this, then they are very likely gone.
