My iPhoto essentially deleted many of my videos

At some point, I don't know when, iPhoto "deleted" a bunch of my videos. I didn't notice earlier because it left the thumbnails, but when I go to play the video, it does nothing and shows a runtime of 0:00.
I had switched harddrives in my 2009 Macbook Pro, and I thought maybe they just got left behind in the transfer. So I hooked up the old harddrive and checked out my library there, but the videos had apparently already disappeared by that point. And it's so long ago, my back-ups are useless.
So I'm out of options. The videos are simply gone. I trusted my media to Apple's software and was punished for it.
Are there better options managing photos and videos for Mac besides iPhoto? I don't feel like I can trust it anymore. Or can I use iPhoto without having to keep everything in a single, corruptable library?

How did you transfer the library? It sounds like you exported the current veraiosn of potos NS VISWOA rather than moving the intact iPhoto library - what exactly did you do?
Exporting is not involved in upgrading or moving to a new system - but if you want to export video you must expport them as kined is original

  • Why is my Macbook pro with OS lion prompting me my startup disk almost full when i have deleted many files, photos and videos? Even thrashing them doesn't help. There seems to be an automatic space usage in the background

I have deleted many unwanted files and apps and yet the available space keeps depleting every time i am using my Macbook Pro. I believe under the OS 10.7.4 one of the features is it backups or has backgrounding features which uses memory. Sometimes even when i hv 8GB space after using my Macbook Pro for say 2hrs surfing internet and using Pages which has a "Save Version" feature suddenly my 8GB goes down to 300+MB only and it starts prompting me "My Startup Disk is almost full" once it reaches 1GB space left. How can i get more space.... Please someone can help me? Do i need to re-format my hardisk??!! Any help out there is greatly appreciated.
My original HD is 320GB. And i don't hv too many Apps installed. I do have abt 50-70apps. I do have many photos and videos stored in iPhoto's Library though.

One thing I've noticed is that a shared tab pops up when I open the finder under "favorites" with a random connection. It's called hp68b... None of my friends that I live with have this and we all use the same internet. Two days ago when I would click it and click get info, it said it was a pc. When I checked it today it said it is a "sharepoint" and looks like a harddrive.
I took it too the store after i spilt water on it but when I got it back it ran perfectly fine. I don't know a lot about computer so if somebody could help me. It says I'm connected to it and I can't disconnect or delete it. I don't know if the guy at the computer store put something in my computer and is sharing all my files.

Hard drive full or near full:
You are going to have to delete, move or archive your data to regain hard drive space.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
You may have to Purchase an external FireWire or Thunderbolt hard drive to move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Ever since I upgraded iPhoto to 9.5, my camcorder videos aren't all downloading properly  and I have several of the videos to say a necessary data reference could not be found.  I also can see many of the pixels on the video footage that was downloaded???

ever since I upgraded iPhoto to 9.5, my camcorder videos aren't all downloading properly  and I have several of the videos to say a necessary data reference could not be found.  I also can see many of the pixels on the video footage that was downloaded.  Anyone have any suggestions???

What version of iPhoto and system are you using?  Also what camera make and model are you using?
See if you can download all of the videos to a folder on the Desktop using Image Capture and import  into iPhoto from that folder.

  • Total iPhoto crash after deleting many photos

After deleting many photos--I'm trying to cull the duplicates--and emptying the iPhoto trash, I quit the app and reopened.  But it wouldn't reopen except to a BLANK iPhoto page.  I could not quit or do anything with the app, so I had to force quit.  Did a computer restart, but still nothing, except a split second flash of photos and then absolutely nothing.  I paid for this update and have seen no advantages whatsoever from the recent version and now this.  Suggestions?!

It's likely that you've damaged the database by trashing too many items at once. Experienced users never delete more than 100 images at a time.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto simultaneous expoting of photos and videos

Hi everybody, I was recently organizing photos and videos in my iphoto libary, exporting and saving them to portable hard-disks. However, videos and photos are both mixed in my iphoto, and during the exporting of the files videos and photos were selected at the same time. When the exporting options came up I was guessing these were just for the photos and chose (original, highest quality) format for the photos and these were exported along with the videos selected too. After having finished exporting my backup, and deleting everything out of my iphoto libary, i came to realize that when i played the videos that were exported along with the photos they were all a very small size (few KB) and blank, (all black, no audio). I guess this is because they were exported with the pictures, and unfortunatley deleted all photos and videos from my iphoto. I had already emptied my iphoto and computer trash.
I am wondering if im correct about why this happened? and is there any way to get these blank videos back to funtioning again?

They get imported together with photos automatically from devices.

  • Upgrade to iPhoto 9.3.1 converted my videos to jpgs

I just installed an upgrade to iPhoto 9.3.1 and now many of my videos in the library has turned into jpgs. In the detail sidebar, it now says they are either RAW or JPG even tho they're videos. When I click on them to view bigger, it just gives me a giant exclamation icon for RAW and bigger still-image for JPG. They're all same videos from iPhone 3GS.

    Hi Terence,
Thanks for your response. I want to find another way other than restoring from the backup because before the upgrade, there was a bug with my albums where many of my photos won't show the thumbnail previews. This upgrade seemed to have fixed that but brought a new bug.
I tried to reveal them in finder but that function would just open a blank finder window defaulting to general computer folder instead of showing a specific folder that holds the photo. I tried Reveal in Finder with a video that works and then navigated around the folders around there and it seems lots of folders are empty. I'm guessing that's why it's leading me to a generic folder with some image/movies. In terms of the file type, I know for sure they're videos because I remember playing them. Since it was taken with a native iOS camera, file type is definitely .mov.
Is there perhaps a way to reset my albums to default or something so it'll restore to generic original setup?

Apple's Icloud with Yosemite and IOS8 on devices is suppose to do just that - synchronize between devices so when you get home the pictures you took with our devices will magically be on you primary computer.
You may also want to look into other "clouds" available -- including clouds you can set up yourself (WD offers make your own cloud - haven't looked into it as don't need it)
Thanks for the constructive feedback! iCloud sync generally works well, though I believe it's time-limited-- You'll have to import them to your library from the iCloud sync to make it "permanent" within a few months.  I'm also using CloudStation on my Synology NAS, and I use Dropbox on all my computers although not for photos, because I'm still using their free account. Keeping iPhoto libraries up to date is not generally an issue.  Though I admit 2 of my 3 computers are on Yosemite and I am using iOS 8, I haven't specifically explored the differences in iCloud behavior on the new versions.
The deleting comment is more around temporarily storing them in one iPhoto library, uploading to Facebook, then deleting from iPhoto without deleting from FB -- it's not so much about how to transfer the photos around.  It's pretty easy to shoot 15 or 20GB of photos in a day with a modern camera, and you might find yourself without an internet connection, or at the very least, too spotty to copy that much data overnight.
For example, on a recent trip, my workflow was to load photos from my RX-100 via SD card into my MacBook Air which only has 128GB of storage.
So I'd copy all photos to iPhoto, flag favorites, edit, add to FB album in iPhoto, let that upload, then export to disk, let that sync to my CloudStation folder back on my NAS at home in the US, then finally delete all un-flagged photos in iPhoto (the "rejects"). By the end of the trip, even the 15GB of all of the flagged, edited photos took up too much space (in addition to all of the originals I was storing on disk), so I deleted the Facebook sync so I that was able to delete them from iPhoto.
Of course, I kept all my originals, but those were in 3 places: SD card, CloudStation folder on my Air, and on my NAS back at home (plus any devices that were powered on and syncing to CloudStation).
This worked great in Iceland where I had 50up/50down internet, but not so great at an agriturismo in Italy where I was getting something like 50% packet loss on their point-to-point wifi internet connection!
When I get home, every single original picture goes onto my master iPhoto library on the Mac Pro at home, but I treat the libraries on my laptops as transient places for editing and uploading, then deleting.  This is not just a multiple-computer problem, though -- I am sure many users just wish to upload then delete, and never keep their originals.

  • Does deleting a picture or video from a Smart Album delete in the Event?

Does deleting a picture or video from a Smart Album delete in the Event?

No - deleting from a smart album does nothing - either selecting a video or photo and pressing delete or dragging the photo or video to the iPhoto trash - it has no effect - does not delete from the smart album nor does it delete from te event
Exactly how are you deleting from a smart album?
A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.
