My Iphoto is at 70G plus, need advice on multiple libraries

I suppose I could just move to an external... but I like having a lot of my images with me on the laptop, like to fool around w/ imovie when on the road, etc. Can anyone give me some advice about how best to manage an iphoto library that has grown too big for my (120 G) Hard drive?
thanks
tom

iView has a function that it can automatically catalog the active iPhoto Library. It's under the iView MediaPro->Getting Started menu. There are also ways to convert over to iView for managing the files and then just use iPhoto for book, calendars , etc. I've written a number of Tutorials on using iView with iPhoto, converting over to iView, etc. They may shed some light on its use with iPhoto.
MS is working with a number of professional photographers and general users for ideas on how to make the next version of Expression Media better. There are both Mac and PC users involved. My continued input to them has been to change the look of the GUI. We'll see. The next big update is due sometime the 1st quarter of next year.
The only issue I have with the current iView (and EM) and Leopard is that the background color of the text fields in some of the menu options, like Batch Rename, is the same as the background color on the thumbnail or media view that were in. If the bg color is dark then the text in those fields can't be seen. I've had to lighten the backgrounds in my catalogs so I can see the text when I use some of those menu functions. More of an annoyance than anything else.

  • Need advice on multiple iPods on one computer

I have found the article on running more than one iPod on a computer. The directions seem simple. I just wanted to post my situation and ask an additional question.
My wife's laptop recently died but we were able to save the hard drive. So her iTunes library should still be there in tact (everything else is). With the current state of the ecomony we are trying to save money and have her "share" my laptop. Is there a way to copy over her library from that hard drive without screwing up my library?
In looking at the instructions for running multiple iPods on one computer, option 3 seems like the best method for the time being. I also have an HP Smart Media Server that has an iTunes system for sharing but I have not had the time to explore that in much depth and have not found much in the documentation that comes with the server. I would greatly appreciate any advice you may have.

Yes, if you are both on your laptop with one windows user login, method 3 can work.....but it can also be really confusing.
You will both have to train yourselves to ALWAYS do the itunes shift-start before opening itunes, every time. Your ITL file is on the laptop and hers is on the salvaged hard drive. I assume you put it in an enclosure and it's connected via USB?
You might also need to check the preferences every time.
For instance if you want your new additions to go to the laptops's hard drive. She wants her podcasts to go to the salvaged drive. You'd have to change your preferences every time using method 3.
You might want to get he media server going before too much longer! And switch to Method 1 with a shared folder on the server.

  • Need advice on multiple videos in Flash Catalyst 5.5

    Hi,
I am looking for some advice and I was hoping that some of you had already made some experience with what I am trying to achieve.
Well, I need to be able to show something like 15-20 F4V-Files, each about 2-3 Minutes, in my project. Each movie is supposed to be triggered by a dedicated button, ideally all from one single state, so like a master state or so. I was wondering now, what would be the best approach.
Can I simply create new stage and basically stack all videos on top of each other and have them played whenever needed or should I create a state for each of them. This would probably cause a mess too, as there is no option to organize the states in a smooth manner.
    Any good advice?
    Thanks,
    Christian

    Hi Christian
I created something similar a while back. From my experience the most efficient way was to create a main page, then on it, a custom component, which hold 20 states within it. I linked the menu buttons to the various states within the custom component. Can't vouch that it's the best way, but it worked well for me.
    Kind regards,

  • Need advice on multiple imac repairs

hi all i bought my imac a few years ago
its a white intel 17 inch imac
i have been having alot of problems with it for the past 8 months
its had 3 logic boards replaced in last 7 months the most recent being 2 weeks ago
and now i am getting same problems i had
it will freeze constantly, fans go super loud, restarts by itself and now i cant even boot it
i turned off the imac after it just froze after about an hour of web browsing (no flash lol)
i already tried disconnecting power reconnecting it and nothing, no start up chime either
the past 3 times this happend it had the logic board replaced
i take care of the imac like a child lol
i keep it clean no drinks or food around it and it has all stock parts i am too scared to fiddle with upgrading parts
i am a student and took me forever to save up and buy it
it must be more then the logic board since its been replaced 3 times already
all my money goes into school so i cant buy a new imac even though i want to
i dont use it for more then 3 hours at a time and most times i will use my phone for web browsing hoping to save what life my imac has left for school work
so my question is what should i do?
take it back for repair and hope it doesnt just die completely?
or should i try and sell it for parts and hopefully make enough off them to buy new imac
    sorry for long post

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The Apple limited and extended warranties leave repair or replace to Apple. However, if a Mac has had 2 or 3 major repairs, which replacing a logicboard is a major repair, then the Mac should qualify for replacement with the closest similar current model, especially if it is still under warranty.
I would call Apple Care and ask for a Customer Relations agent. Explain your iMac's repair history, to which the agent should have access through its serial number, and ask them to now arrange for replacement of the iMac under the warranty agreement.

  • Multiple Libraries in iPhoto

I have a critical need to have multiple libraries in iPhoto primarily to reduce the total amount of photos in one file. These have been created and put in a desktop folder for easy access. I am sure a professional photographer would need multiple libraries, primarily one for each photo session then when have the subjects in for a viewing would need FAST access to the individual libraries and using preferences is by no means quick. Now, there are two primary problems that have come up though the first would be eliminated after the photos have been categorized into their assorted libraries.
First: How to move photos to the other files.
Second: How to open the file wanted without having to go through the rigamarole of changing the preferences every time. In other words, why can't I double click the library I want and have it automatically switch to that file as primary?

Easiest way: use iPhoto Library Manager

    You can.
Or Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
There's been no need to edit the preferences since iPhoto 6.
I am sure a professional photographer would need multiple libraries,
A professional wouldn't be using an app like iPhoto. A Pro would be using an app like Aperture, with - perhaps - one Project per shoot. In fact, you can do that with iPhoto and one Event per shoot.

  • Need advice with video editing from iphoto to imovie, or something else.

ok, here's the deal. I have about 1tb of videos(in raw iphone straight to iphoto format), about 3k of them.  I took a few vids a day for a year or so. They are all in iphoto right now but i need to take each days vids and put them together and export that in a smaller format.  I need to do that for each day of the year.  But it's a nightmare trying to get the vids from iphoto to imovie.  Is there an easy way?  I don't want to do major work to them, i just want to put them all together and have 1 vid file.  So say I have 3 vids on jan 1st in iphoto, I need to move all 3 to another app, put them together, export the single file, keeping as much of the quality as I can, then I can delete the original raw vids and move that single file back to iphoto.
So instead of having events with lots of videos inside them, 1 event per day, 1 video.
any ideas on a quick and easy way to do this?

iMovie is the tool for that job and it's video so there are no "quick and easy ways", I'm afraid. The files are huge and it takes time.
What nightmare are you having getting the material from iPhoto to iMovie?
As there is a lot of repetition in the process you describe, have you considered using Automator to try and do some of the heavy lifting for you?

  • Need advice on upgrading OS and iPhoto with multiple altered libraries.

I am going to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard (Bundle Pack) and from iPhoto 6 to iPhoto 8. My wife and I have separate accounts on our MacBook Pro and I have combined our iPhoto Libraries onto an external hard drive using iPhoto Library Manager. Afterwards, I opened the Mac HD icon on my desktop, opened the pictures folder, went through the iPhoto Library folder, and opened the Originals folder. I deleted my photos through here which kept the thumbnail data (when I open iPhoto, I can see all of my photos, I just can't enlarge them beyond a certain size or I get a grayed out image with an exclamation point). I have since done the same for some of my wife's photos to free up space. This has been sort of useful to know what photos we have while not eating up the hard drive.
How do I install iLife '09 with a clean iPhoto Library? I do not care about seeing thumbnails anymore. However, is it possible to keep the thumbnails on my wife's account? When I open the iPhoto Library on the external HD, will it automatically convert it to the updated version?
An Apple Tech once told me that altering the iPhoto database like I did can corrupt it and they have since removed that ability in the latest version of iPhoto. I know I screwed it up and am unsure about the best approach once I do upgrade. Any advice is much appreciated.

Installing iPhoto '09 will work smoothly and seamlessly for operating libraries - I have no idea how it will react to the ones your have corrupted but suspect that it will upgrade them so they will operate in the same crippled way they do now
To have a fresh library you depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use new library option
An Apple Tech once told me that altering the iPhoto database like I did can corrupt it
that is correct as you see when you try to enlarge a photo in the libraries you have modified
and they have since removed that ability in the latest version of iPhoto.
not removed but made more difficult so it is less like to happen by mistake - you can still do it in a number of ways but it is not a good idea
I know I screwed it up and am unsure about the best approach once I do upgrade. Any advice is much appreciated.
My advice is to use standard operating procedure - backup everything up and do your upgrades (I would do the OS and wait a few days and then do iPhoto myself) - the good library will be updated and work as before - the corrupted libraries may or may not upgrade but i would guess they will and work as before too

  • Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.
    Much obliged for any input

PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED.  Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.
Best price and quality, got my 1,1 with 8 x 2GB (ideal is 4 or 8 DIMMs)
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $25
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
With price of 250GB SSD $155 I'd go with that or stick with $89 for 128GB .

  • Syncing iPod to new user account-need advice

Hey All! I set up a new user account for my friend on my imac, so he will want to sync his iPod Touch to iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, etc. in his new user account. I know there are plenty of freeware and shareware apps to get his music from the iPod into iTunes, but need advice concerning everything else oh his iPod.
I know I'll first get that pop up window that says his iPod is synced to another computer, and that I use "cancel" rather than "sync and erase". After doing that, I guess I use one of the shareware apps to get the music transferred over.
Now, after that, if I do a regular sync, will iTunes transfer his apps that are on the iPod?
Do I need to open iPhoto and download the photos on his iPod into iPhotot before doing a sync?
What about text messages? Will they remain in tact?
I don't think he uses the calendar on his iPod so no worries there....
What about Playlists that he has on the iPod? Will just the music transfer with the shareware apps or playlists also?
    Will Notes be saved?
Thanks for your help. Don't wanna screw up his iPod by setting up this user account for him.

Apps are tied to the ID I assume the new account is just on the iMac and not a new iTunes account?
Yes, you can import photos into iPhoto the same as you would off any camera.
You would need to transfer purchased content (like apps). You can't do that via sync as it's a new computer and all content will be erased as you are aware.

What happened to your friends computer? Was there no backup?

If iPhoto doesn't do what you need you could have a look at Aperture (available at the Mac App Store, but have a look here for a free trial: http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial/
Pixelmator is the one I use - great value for the money and does everything I used to need to do in Photoshop. Have a look here: http://www.pixelmator.com/
If you buy it from the Mac App Store Pixelmator comes with a free upgrade to version 2 (rumoured to be in the next couple of weeks, according to the developers blog).
Usual caveat: I don't intend to sound like a commercial, just a happy user with no connections to Pixelmator.

I need advice here! I am studing for Java Programmer certification (310-035) and I know now that the certification does not have any expiration date, instead it's version based. So, if I get now a J2SE 1.4 certification, soon it will be outdated... I guess!
Does anyone know or have any ideia of WHEN java 1.5 sdk will be avaliable, and anyone can tell me how long it will take for a new 1.5 programmer certification be avaliable for general public?

Do both. 1.5 is far enough away that you do not want to wait for it.
And besides, 1.5 has enough new stuff in it that you'll want to recertify anyway.

  • Need advice on video software.

    Need advice on video software.
I currently use adobe elements 3 and have done so for a few years now with no problems. my os is XP and my system is a couple of years old, but we do have a brand new win7 machine in the house.
I am currently look at Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra OR Adobe Premiere Elements 8. Reviews for both softwares seem very good BUT, when I dig deeper into user reviews instead of editor reviews do I find problems.
Major problems with program crashing all over the place, at start up etc, and it is still not getting along with any win7 machine? Major problems with drivers. Honestly, I do not want to have to jump through dozens of hoops to get any software to run. After I pay for it, it should run, period.
Has anyone else here used both softwares and can you give an honest opinion of each?
I am also asking these same questions on the cyberlink site.
I would like to upgrade my video software to take advantage of the new features that are coming out but I really don't want a big headache trying to run one or the other. To be fair, when I bought adobe elements 3 I had also bought pinnacle, which has gathered dust since my first week with it, which is why elements was purchased. That was money wasted and I do not wish to repeat this. I would like to go with Premiere Elements 8 but remain very unsure.

If your newer machine is Win7 64-bit, it might be worth waiting for SP-1 to be issued, and then hope that 64-bit drivers are fully included. The 64-bit drivers now seem t be an issue at this point, and that will affect any NLE program.
Also, and regardless of which particular program you choose, optimizing your computer, the OS, the hardware, and the resources management, will go a very long way to insuring success. Few programs can tax a computer, as an NLE can - any NLE. Video and Audio editing will stress your system, like almost nothing else can, except for heavy-duty CAD, or 3D work, though those are usually done only on specialized, optimized computers, designed just for those applications.
Not the specific advice that you seek, but it's the best that I can do.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

Do I need to point iPhoto to this new location?
    Thanks!

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
    Assuming a Managed Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
