My iPhoto library seems corrupted

I can see my pictures, but I have three entries for each picture - the first has the date and seems like it is the real event.  Then the same picture will be duplicated twice and instead of a date, it has a long string of characters and numbers, like a GUID.
Is there some easy fix for this?  Or do I have to go through all 3000 pictures and delete things?

I can see my pictures, but I have three entries for each picture
Sounds like you imported one Library to another? Did you drop the Library icon onto the iPhoto icon for instance?
Restore from your back up is the simple and fast solution.

  • IPhoto Library seems far too large

    Hi,
When I first loaded my images into iPhoto I thought what I wanted was to preserve the original file structure i.e. I keep all my images in a 'Digital Photos' folder, then broken down by year and date. So when I imported the library to iPhoto I unchecked +Copy Files To iPhoto Library.+
My iPhoto library seems just as large as my Digital Photos folder. I think now rather than have a separate folder, I'd rather just store the photos in iPhoto and half the disk space. So my two questions are:
    1) If I have a 'referenced library' of aliases which appears to be the case, why is the iPhoto library package so large regardless?
    2) If it were easier to use a managed library (no need for separate photos folder) how could I move all of my photos into iPhoto easily without having to erase my whole library, loosing my events and tags?
    Thanks for your help!

So when I imported the library to iPhoto I unchecked Copy Files To iPhoto Library.
As you probably know from reading this forum this is not a recommended way to use iPhoto - there are many drawbacks and over time it will create problems for you
    1) If I have a 'referenced library' of aliases which appears to be the case, why is the iPhoto library package so large regardless?
the iPhoto library contains an original of the photo (in you case this is just an alias since you are not copying items to the iPhoto library) in the originals folder, a thumbnail (very small) of the photo in the data folder, a copy of the latest modified photo in the modified folder if any edits or modifications have been made to the photo plus a database structure description file (library6.iPhoto) and some other support files - usually small
SInce your iPhoto library is large I assume that you have edited, rotated, cropped or otherwise modified many of your photos.
    2) If it were easier to use a managed library (no need for separate photos folder) how could I move all of my photos into iPhoto easily without having to erase my whole library, loosing my events and tags?
This is the recommended method of operation
TO go from a referenced library which you now have to to a managed library many people have been successful using Alias herder -http://www.rorohiko.com/aliasherder.html
Back up your iPhoto library in case of problems and run alias herder against the library - is will pull the oritinal photos into the library originals folder replacing the aliases and you will be fine if everything goes smoothly
And keep on backing up - it is important for any computer data
And strongly consider getting Old Toad's automator script and regularly backing up the database file, library6.iPhoto in addition to your regular full library backups

  • My music library seems corrupted. Nearly every song (431 albums) displays "the song ... could not be used because the original file cannot be found". Is there any way to correct this? Please help, thanks, Kelly

Almost my entire itunes music library seems corrupted. Nearly every song (431 albums) displys "the song ...  cannot be used because the original file cannot be found". Is there any way to correct this? Please help!
    thanks,
    kelly61

Select one of the songs in question and right click, then select "Get Info". On the main dialog page you should see where iTunes thinks the file resides. Then use Windows Explorer to see if the file is actually there. If not, find out where your music is stored. If there is not a correlation between iTunes and reality, go into iTunes and delete all of the files which are not found.  Then, in iTunes, select File->Add Folder to Library and select where the music is stored. iTunes will re-add all of the music into your library.

  • I havent deleted anything but some Images on my iPhoto Library is corrupt ?

    Hey everyone
I have macbook running latest yosemite software. Couple months back i have spend hours to build my iPhoto library. Last week i was trying to organize my desktop and folders and I probably moved some folders containing photos so now some images wont open in iphoto and it says corrupt file.
I have spent 2 days organizing 4000 photos and categorized them in iphoto library and i dont want to lose all that work.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers

I probably moved some folders containing photos so now some images wont open in iphoto and it says corrupt file.
Where where these folders located that you may have moved?
With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when you double click on those photos?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Restored from Time Machine but iPhoto library file corrupted

iMac OSX 10.9.4 crashed mid-use. Would not chime let alone re-start. Restored successfully from Time Machine and apart from Mail sending (hopefully) a few up to four year old emails again, it seemed fine. However, apart from one or two images, iPhoto (9.5.1) library was not visible in its location on an external hard drive. Inspecting Package Contents revealed that the size seemed right and the masters were present so I used Photo Library First Aid (Command Option start) to Repair Permissions and then again to Repair Database. All images and events now ok, as I believe are the locations, but the previously identified Faces are all missing. Is there a way to recover these?
I do have a separate Carbon Copy Cloner back up from the iPhoto external hard drive to another external hard drive and before, throughout and after the iMac crash, this back up process continued to operate normally. So I could try and re-store the iPhoto library from a CCC back. I just wondered if anyone knew another way that I could just repair the Faces part as the rest seems ok now.

    Hi Mr D
    Still wading through treacle!
I recall I used iPhoto Library Manager and then selected largest file size and most metadata to merge the two libraries. Still not perfect but images are there even if a few face thumbnails are absent.
Using SMART Utility I checked to see what was going on with hard drives as a CCC back up reported some deep system files were on an unreadable block. I should have replaced them from CCC but there were only a few and they were so unusual I hesitated. Whilst searching which replacement hard drive I could fit and whether I could fit it myself, iMac crashed again so another restore from TM. (According to SU my hard drive is failing as it has 6 re-allocated blocks and 1 event error). Back up and restored, I now see that various movies in iMovie '09 cannot access the source files as they are not in the original location. This I think is more to do with me relocating my iPhoto library for space reasons to an external hard drive rather than the crashes and re-builds. I hadn't realised the distinction between imported movies into iMovie '09 (from a movie camera say) and those from iPhoto (from an iPhone say) and what would happen if, for space reasons, I moved the iPhoto library to an external hard drive. Yes, I know now I should have consolidated the movies. There are occasions when a small user guide might help! Also the new iMovie '10 library, which runs as an alternative alongside iMovie '09, is happily located on the external hard drive whereas the iMovie '09 library sits on the iMac's hard drive.. All the still images are ok in all the movies in iMovie '09 (even having moved?) its just the .avi files that it cannot locate. Simples, I thought. I created a folder in iPhoto '09 with all the iPhoto avi files and thought if I exported them and then imported them into a new library in the location (my iMac user pictures folder) it would then be able to 'see' them. Problem is in the iPhoto '09 library on the external hard drive I have many more folders than in the newly created iMovie '09 library on the iMac hard drive. iMovie '09 is looking for /Users/'me'/Pictures/iPhoto library/Originals/'movie file title'/'file name'.avi but the 'Originals' folder is in fact just an alias to point to an adjacent folder in the iMovie library package called 'Masters' and in the new library I only have 'Masters' and not an alias 'Originals' folder.
So iMovie '09 still cannot 'see' the .avi files even though they are now (almost) in the right location on the correct drive (the iMac) as I don't have an 'Originals' folder in this library whereas the legacy library does. Can I get around this? Why does one library have a 'Masters' folder as well as an 'Originals' and 'Modified' aliases and the new library only 'Masters'? As I cannot re-point iMovie I need to have an 'Originals' alias pointing at 'Masters' for this to possibly work. My plan was to resolve the project issues once the files were all accessible in the correct place and then consolidate and move the iMovie '09 library as a working entity to the external hard drive where there is space.
The second issue is that of the c600 .avi files I exported (all of which function in the library from whence they were exported), 129 will not import into the new '09 library I have created on my iMac hard drive. This is odd as they are visible and play in their source library but refuse to be imported into the new one made with the same application. Other than a couple of the ones that do import showing a format in QT as 16 bit little-endian signed integer 44100Hz as opposed to 8 bit unsigend integer 16000HGz for one that didn't, I am at a loss to understand what the new library objects to.
I have now isolated all the exported .avi files that will not import into a folder pending someone hopefully providing a answer....

  • My iPhoto library is corrupt. How can I fix it?

The library disappeared from iPhoto so I restored it and now its fragmented my events, they are out of date sequence, some photos appear as individuals outside of events for no reason, there are triplicates and they are all named with strange numbers and letters. I bought "Duplicate Photos Fixer Pro" but when I went to scan the library it said it couldn't locate any photos, yet I can see them when I open iPhotos. I have repaired and rebuilt the library but it did not fix the issues as mentioned about. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi Larry. When I opened iPhoto my whole library had disappeared apart from one event with about 60 photos I had added last Sunday. I went into Spotlight and searched for the Pictures folder found the iPhoto library right clicked on it and there was an option, I think it said something like "reimport" into iPhoto. I did that and then the iPhoto library appeared but with all of the issues as mentioned above. It is certainly not an old iPhoto library as there is only one on my system that I have used without any problems for 12 months. Is there a way I can delete this scrambled library in iPhotos and restore it?

  • Iphoto library seems to slow down my new MacPro.

so far no one at at the Apple store can have a solution why the new MacPro is RATHER  slow.
some did suggest that the iphoto library MAY BE  too big...
also, when I work with it ..( it contains over `12000 items) ..it machine works hard and slow.
    who can help ?
    establish another library ?
safe the pics on an external harddrive ?
    appreciate your ideas and help,
    heinz

Open the Activity Monitor when iPhoto is slowing down your Mac and see what processes is soaking up all the CPU cycles.  Also check the Console for messages during that time.  It can also give info as to what's slowing things down.
Do you have any anti virus software installed or have used MacKeeper, CleanMyMac or similar type of software on your Mac?

  • IPhoto Library seems to be empty after running the iPhoto Library Upgrader

    Hi,
I just transfered my account from a previous Mac Pro running 10.8.5 to a new MacBook Pro running 10.9.   I tried to open my iPhoto Library and it suggested me to download the iPhoto Library Upgrader, so I did, and upgraded the iPhoto Library, but now, there aren't any photos on my Library, the iPhoto Library weight is 32 GB, so I don't really know what's going on with it.   Please some help, all the pictures from my 2 year old daughter are there

Drag the library that is not working to the desktop on the new  Mac and then drag the library from the old Mac o the pictures folder on the new Mac and launch iPhoto
You should not need the library upgrader. It is only for iPhoto 5 and earlier. iPhoto should simply do any required upgrades and you are on your way
Once you have a working  library trash the one on the desk top

  • IPhoto Library flles corrupted

While attempting to add music to my Library slideshow, the edit screen went black even though all the pictures were showing above. Then I noticed nothing showed up in the Desktop system folder for Desktop Picture when I noticed my Desktop Pic had disappeared. When I went back and selected Library in iPhoto 5.0.4 the files were unreadeable. I backed up the Library folder and installed a new Library, but it wasn't able to open the iPhotoLibrary_old.
Now I can't even open iPhoto as it freezes. I have temporarily placed the Library and iPhoto in the Trash, and await helpful Discussion suggestions.
I have AppleCare. Should I call them? Are all those happy photos of the past past?

    Juan,
you can certainly start over if you have your photos on Cds.
Navigate to your Pictures folder and drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop. Keep it there for now.
Launch iPhoto and it will ask if you want to create a new library. Choose to create a new library and then iPhoto will open the new library.
Now import the images you have on the CDs.
Let me know how it goes.

  • IPhoto library appears corrupted - help

Within the last week I have upgraded to OS 10.6.3 and iPhoto 8.1.2
When I click on the iPhoto icon in the dock, all of the event icons are intact, but when I click on an individual photo in any event I see a dark screen with an exclamation mark. The only event that is OK is the one created with my most recent batch of imports.
I have tried restoring using TM, but it quits after about 10% of the library is restored. I was hoping to restore all my calendars and albums and so went back to a time when I was using iPhoto 8.0.3 (I think). Is that why I can't restore everything?
I have tried holding down the option + command key to launch iPhoto and rebuilding from there. No success.
I have tried using iPhoto Library Manager, again with no success.
I do have all but one iPhoto event stored on the external drive. Can I delete the library on the HD and transfer everything back from the external drive?
Is there anything I should try before I do that?

I would drag the iPhoto library to the desktop and drag the backup version to the pictures folder and launch iPhoto - you probably will be ok but you will have all versions available just in case

  • IMac iPhoto Library filed corrupted?

my whole iphoto library has disappeared out of nowhere? i have done no update or made any changes what so ever! i went in finder and my iphoto library is there but the symbol is a picture of a page and not the symbol it used to be, of a couple off photos.
anyone no any way i can get it back or a reason too why this has happened? the file is under 'package' now and when i click on it, it just comes up a window saying
Last login: Sun May 12 21:32:59 on ttys000
    Danielles-iMac:iPhoto Library dani3ll3--x$
is this is not fixable ...
Luckily i still have all the pictures on my iphone that were on my old library, to create a new library with them all in, when i click on iPhoto the first thing it opens is a window saying 'Create new library' i click that then plug in my phone, it then comes up only pictures from my camera roll but none from the rest of the folders? but i have 4,000 pictures on my iphone... any idea whats going on and how do i get all my photos back onto my iMac!

the file is under 'package' now and when i click on it, it just comes up a window saying
Last login: Sun May 12 21:32:59 on ttys000
    Danielles-iMac:iPhoto Library dani3ll3--x$
What you are seeing is the message in a Terminal window; the Finder is opening a unix shell instead of launching iPhoto.
What do you mean by " the file is under 'package' now"  Is your iPhoto Library in a folder called "Package"?
Is there another folder called "Masters" in the same directory? If yes, that folder should contain nested subfolders named by year, month, date.
Or ctrl-clicking the library file should show such a folder. Is it there?
For how to import from your iPhone see my iother post here: Re: iPhoto problems

  • Portable Home Syncing corrupts iPhoto Library

    Server setup:
Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2 (clean install)
Everything setup according to spec; works great.
    Client setup:
    Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (clean install)
    iLife '09
Portable syncing rule set to sync the Pictures folder ONLY at login and logout. At no other time is it sync.
    Bug:
Everytime it syncs; the entire iPhoto Library gets corrupted and I get a 'There was a problem syncing this file'
When I check the file, the iPhoto Library is a generic white icon with a size of a few megs versus the original 5GB. (yes I have a backup).
Any idea what may be causing this?
I cannot deploy Snow Leopard Server for my clients because of this silly bug.

    Hi all.
I'm also having serious problems concerning "Home Syncing".
So far those are my conclusions:
    • Home Syncing cannot understand when a file is locked. It will simply replace the "archived" file on the server with a corrupted and incomplete one. (Time Machine, for instance, delays the syncing of that file until it is no longer being used):
    • Because of the last problem it's impossible to use the syncing interval on the System Preferences. It's simply begging for havoc and chaos.
    • Home Syncing (again on direct opposition to Time Machine) does not understand the concept of bundles (or packages, whatever is the correct expression in English... English that I'm not a native nor a fluent speaker, sorry about that
Not being able to understand those wonderful "folders as a single file" concept makes it try to copy my full Aperture library, even if I just open and close the thing.
So it's guaranteed fun for almost half an hour every time that I do some logout sync.
    • Even using only login / logout sync, Aperture library will get eventually corrupted, as will pretty much every other item that I try to sync that happens to be a bundle (That God for 1Password automatically backup of it's own library, otherwise I would have lost all my logins passwords and Software serial numbers).
    • Every so often files that were deleted on a machine on the last day, simply find their way back at login syncing.
And the opposite also happens. Changes made in a user folder on one of the machines, simply don't replicate when a user logs in onto another one.
    • If a folder or file name is changed, Home Syncing will not understand that as a change.
Instead it will get from the server the old file/folder while keeping the new one.
Since it will copy the full content of the folder, just changing the name back to the old one, you better pray that there's not that much info inside otherwise it's time to grab a coffee and the daily newspaper.
    • Copying is slow. Painfully slow!
In a full Gigabit Ethernet connection, whose transfer while using AFP are extremely fast, Home Syncing can take 10x the amount of time to copy a similar folder.
Home Syncing seems pretty much as a 2nd class citizen on the Server package.
It's copy capabilities are way bellow of the expected, showing basic errors that were quickly fixed on Time Machine but that still remain here since (at least) Mac OS X Server 10.5.
I like this concept... actually I like it a lot.
As long as you have access to a Mac OS X Server, you can basically create your own cloud.
Even without having to sync the full home folder, just a specific "cloud" folder (something like a dropbox folder).
That connected with a Time Machine backup to allow you to retrieve older version of a file (whenever necessary) and you would have a great and safe working environment... something that I would love to do, if only Home Syncing wasn't just a big disaster.
Let's hope that Apple can figure out what's happening and release an update to fix this.

  • BUG: iPhoto 9 Slideshow - Text Slide Bugs and iPhoto Library Corruption

I was wondering if anyone else has run into the following issues:
I have had multiple issues with iPhoto crashing, stop responding, and database corruption where I cannot open iPhoto. These issues all began when I tried to use the new themed slideshow in iPhoto v9.1. Previously, I had only used iPhoto to create basic slideshows with iPhoto v7.x. I was hoping that I would be able to create my masterpiece in iPhoto 11 (v9.1) but I have only been frustrated by my attempts so far.
What should have been a 3 - 4 hour operation has become a 20 hour nightmare and I still don't have a slideshow to show for my efforts. This has been one of my most disappointing uses of Apple software ever.
Repeatable, reproducible bugs that I have run into include:
    1. Deleting a photo that appears in the timeline before a sub-title causes havoc with subsequent sub-titles (a.k.a. Text Slides). Subsequent subtitles are randomly copied to pictures following the one it was assigned to. Further, there is no subtitle icon in the timeline and the photos have to be manually modified to eliminate the subtitle. Work around is click the "Text Slide" button
    2. Zooming and/or image placement is not preserved and not visible when previewed, exported, or iPhoto is closed and then reopened.
    3. The iPhoto Library becomes corrupt and permissions problems prevent me from working with my photos. This happens while working on slideshow. I have had to rebuild my library and repair permissions no less than five times since I started working on my slideshow.

iPhoto's slideshow feature is fine but no tool for a "masterpiece".
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie, on every Mac sold, as is iDVD.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter $29
    PhotoToMovie $49.95
    PulpMotion $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Express $199
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.
However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Express is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.
    Regards
    TD

  • IPhoto Library corrupted!!! or not.

I believe my iPhoto library is corrupted. Am I right in assuming that the photos additional information I added has been lost. My concern is that there is around 9,500 photos that have been grouped, people/places have been named. I prefer not to do all this again. Any suggestions would help. I have only basic knowledge and need step by step help.
    Many thanks in anticipation
    Grant

I was doing an import but iPhoto crashed. The report is at the bottom. Every time I open it, it crashes immediately. This report is produced.  I created a new library as a test and it works fine.  But all my photos are in the original library and I can't import from the original library into a new one or least I don't know how to.
    My profile is still correct.
Also I cannot find the first aid in iPhoto.
    I hope this helps.
