My iPhoto library won't open because "it first needs to be prepared," but running the iPhoto Library Upgrader does not change anything.  What gives?

I'll try to be as detailed as I can:
I have a mid-2010 iMac.  I backed-up and then wiped my Mountain Lion hard drive so that I could have a clean install of Mavericks.  I am now in the process of importing my backed-up files, like iTunes and documents, from my external back-up to my new Mavericks machine.  Everything in this process has worked so far.  I moved the iPhoto library over from the external back-up to the proper location (Users->Pictures->iPhoto Library).  Two hours later when the transfer was complete, rather than having a normol iPhoto Library icon (stack of pictures with a photo of a flower), the library appeared as a folder with a half done progress bar and an "x" close button in the corner.
This library would not open so I deleted it and started the whole thing over.  Two hours later, same thing.  I then restarted my machine and got a regularl looking iPhoto Library icon, but now when I try to open it I get a prompt that says "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first nees to be prepared: to prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader avaliable from Apple."  I downloaded the iPhoto Library Upgrader from Apple, ran it, and it says that the library has been updated and can now be used.  But when I try to open iPhoto, I hit the same problem, iPhoto doesn't open and I instead get a prompt saying that the library needs to be prepared.
One more thing, when I run the iPhoto Library Upgrader, there is a un-progressing progress bar (a sideways barber shop poll) that says the program is building thumbnails, but then Upgrader gives me a prompt that the library has been upgraded (even though the progress bar is still cranking along).  PLEASE HELP.

What version of iPhoto were you running prior to Mavericks?  First boot into Revovery volume (boot with the Command  + R keys held down) and repair the disk and disk permissions.  Then reboot back into Mavericks.
Two hours later when the transfer was complete, rather than having a normol iPhoto Library icon (stack of pictures with a photo of a flower), the library appeared as a folder with a half done progress bar and an "x" close button in the corner.
There was a problem with copying the older iPhoto library from the backup.  Delete the library and drag it once again from the backup drive to the Pictures folder.  Run the upgrader again. Is this what you see when your first launch the upgrader?

  • Fresh install of iPhoto 11 won't open - say's it needs update.

    Hi,
I need some help here. I just re-installed my MBP (mid 2010) with OSX Lion, got all updates. After that i installed my iLife 2011 software bundel, and got every update downloaded and installed. Rebootet and then tried to start iPhoto (for the first time since my re-install). Now it says: "In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the lastest version." Problem is, that i allready did this before i tried to start iPhoto - So i'm stuck. iPhoto has been installed from the iLife 2011 bundel DVD, and not from the App Store.
Hope some of you can help me. I have searched the discussion forum, and i all i find is some guides aboout deleting som cache files, but these does not exsist on my mac, because iPhoto has never beed opened.
Ps. I made a backup of my iPhoto library, before i did the Lion reinstall - so nothing is lost.
(sorry for my bad english, i'm from Denmark )
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
I had the same happen to me, i updated with an ilife11 dvd, iphoto now won't open says i need to do the software update but everything is up to date when i run the update.  I tried to do the steps you suggested above, but i can't 'get info' on iphoto to see what version i have, when i try to click the icon the same little box pops up saying i need to update to latest version, run software update now to install.  I did try searching another way and it looks like i have iphoto 9.0 on Mac and last modified last night when i did what i thought was an ugrade. i was under the impression i was upgrading my current iphoto 9 to iphoto 11 when i did the ilife dvd.  (im computer illiterate) anyhow i can't open iphoto now and im wondering if i've just lost all my pictures that i've never backed up, at this point i could care less about upgrading to the newest app, i just want all my photos back.  Do you think i should put the dvd back in and try it again or will that just mess everything up now (new apps and other updates that came on that dvd seem fine when i open them)
    I'm using a Mac OS X version 10.6.8

  • HT5037 Indefinite loop trying to open iPhoto - need to prepare library with installer. Follow instructions and it says it is prepared but still won't open and says it needs to be prepared.

I open iPhoto and receive a message saying 'To open your library with this version of iPhoto it must first be prepared.' Then the Learn More or Quit option. I click Learn More and am taken to a site to download the installer. I follow the instructions and launch the installer. It says 'Your library can now be updated by the current version of iPhoto. Would you like to launch iPhoto now?'  I click launch iPhoto and a warning pops up saying that it needs to be prepared. this is an indefinite loop and I haven't been able to launch iPhoto in over a year! This is extremely frustrating! HELP!

Care to share how you resolved the issure for others who might have the same issue?

  • Firefox won't open... at all. On a Mac running the beta. What should I do?

Not sure what happened, but I can't open Firefox anymore. I'm on a Mac and pretty sure I've been using the beta release. I remember it updating a few days ago, but anyway... it won't open. I've tried rebooting... nothing. It doesn't load. It just... sits there with the light on under it in the dock, but if I do a Force Quit.... it shows as not responding. How can I uninstall/reinstall ... without losing my bookmarks? It's been doing this for the past two days. Thanks. No offense to other browsers, but I hate everything except for Firefox.

What happens??? What are your system specs??

  • I can't open a web page saved with "save page as" from the Firefox (3.6.16) file menu. What gives?

The icons for the saved page appear in the folder selected (e.g., Desktop)--and the default "whole web page" was selected in the "save as" box--but either double-clicking or right-clicking and selecting "open" on either icon leads to zippo. What am I doing wrong?

Do you have any custom DNS settings on the devices that cannot connect?
What happens If you connect to a different Wifi network outside of your home with any of the devices that can't open the website in your home, can you view the website?
If you Ping the website from home what IP address does it attempt to ping?

  • Elements Organizer 13.  The program primary window does not open.

Good afternoon. I installed Elements Organizer. The first some times it has opened correctly and I managed to transfer all photos. But now the program primary window does not open. In dock the active icon appears, in the left top corner there is a name of the program and having clicked with its right mouse button it is possible to open options. What to do in such situation? Photoshop Elements 13 works correctly, but it is very inconvenient to search for photos.

I managed to locate the problem
I have an Elgato EyeTV 610. It is an old DVB-C TV Tuner hooked up on Firewire.
When I remove the EyeTV 610 from the Firewireport it works fine.
As mentioned in my first posting I was able to have the import window pop up by attaching my camera.
The workaround also works when pluggin in my iPhone (Import window pops up automatically)

    Your Library is damaged.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
As for goign back: do you have an undamaged library?

  • Aperture library won't open after using new iphoto

My Aperture library won't open after accidently using iphoto to view it. It says Aperture is outdated but I run 3.4.5 version which is the last.
Now I CAN'T DO MY WORK thanks to this lunacy.
Anyone any suggestions how to fix this ****?

    Also one more thing
On the MacBook Air - Where aperture is working fine and loading the library, i tried to change the name of the library and then when I tried to open it it shouted with the error ""Error Opening Library--The library could not be imported because it is from an out of date version of Aperture 3. Please upgrade the library to the latest version of Aperture 3 and try again""
But when I changed the name back it was working fine again on the MacBook AIr

  • IPhoto 9.6 Library won't open

    iPhoto 9.6 (910.29)
Loaded the new iPhoto with Yosemite.  I have most of my photos stored on an external drive in a file named iPhoto Library which properly displays the correct application icon.  After loading Yosemite I plugged in the external drive to open my photos.  iPhoto launched, displayed a message that the pictured needed to be "converted" (though they opened fine under Mavericks) so I said "OK".  There's about 45GB of photos stored.  Now, the file size indicates the same and iPhoto application is launched when I double-click or directly open iPhoto and select the library . . . BUT the photos will not display.  Instead, the file is apparently being read as a NEW library and a "yellow-sticky" instruction pops up telling me how to load new photos.
So, anybody have any ideas on how to FORCE OPEN ann iPhoto Library file under the new iPhoto 9.6?
I am on a MacBook Air.  My wife still has Mavericks on her MacBook Pro.  The iPhoto Library will no longer open on her Mac either.

    iPhoto library upgrader
The library upgrader is a tool to prepare older iPhoto Libraries for migrating them to iPhoto '11 or later. See iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
To update or upgrade the iPhoto application to a new version, you need to download an update for the iPhoto from the AppStore.
To update iPhoto to version iPhoto 9.6:
    Launch the AppStore.
Open the "Store" menu. Sign in with your AppleID.
Check the Updates page, if an update for iPhoto is waiting.
If there is no update, delete your current iPhoto from the Applications folder and open the "Purchased" tab of the AppStore. If iPhoto is listed with "Accept", press the "Accept" button  and then "install".
If iPhoto is listed without "Accept", press the Install button.
If iPhoto is completely missing from "Purchased", go to the main page of the App Store, search for iPhoto, and buy the upgrade. It should be listed as a "Free" purchase.

  • Iphoto 5.0.4 library won't open in iPhoto 9.5 (Mavericks)

I copied an iPhoto 5.0.4 library onto an Macbook Air running Mavericks.  The copied library appears to be recognized as an iPhoto library but when I try to start iPhoto using that library, it doesn't recognize that there are any photos in it.

You need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on that library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.5.
